THE EVOLUTION OF TRANSPORT MODEL FOR INDIVIDUALS USING BICYCLES 80 s-90 s Private motorized vehicle as a the main mode of transport Increasing pollution Use of bicycle as a model of transport is adversely affected due to: Fragility of the users vs car Outline transportation ufavorable. Lack of tradition in the use of the bicycle in the city. 3
THE EVOLUTION OF TRANSPORT MODEL FOR INDIVIDUALS USING BICYCLES 2002 Approval of the Bycicle Strategic Plan in the city of Barcelona Technical manuals on bike lanes. Media campaigns. Creation of the Bicycle Office % increase in the use of private bicycle 4

DEFINITION OF THE SERVICE THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT MODEL FOR INDIVIDUALS USING BICYCLES Bicing, the public transport service of Barcelona for individuals using bicycles, is a: simple and practical one way service sustainable service that allows you to go wherever and whenever you want, without making any noise or emitting exhaust fumes. a transport service that complements with the public transport networks. for use on regular journeys, and not for leisure or tourist use.
THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT MODEL FOR INDIVIDUALS USING BICYCLES THE PEACEFUL REVOLUTION IN SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY After 10 years of operation, it is true to say that the residents of Barcelona have "fallen in love" with Bicing, making the initiative a success: Total no. of visits to the website: more than 11 million visits Total no. of times bicycles used: more than 120 million times Total distance travelled: More than 270 million km. Nº of subscribers: more than subscribers
THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT MODEL FOR INDIVIDUALS USING BICYCLES PILOT TEST OF ELECTRIC BICING: Objectives Improve and complement the efficiency of the current Bicing service, making easier long and ascending journeys. Check with an initial pilot test the effectiveness and acceptance of the new model of service for the next service tender in Promote the use of the electric bicycle instead of motorbikes or private cars. PROMOTE THE USE OF THE ELECTRIC BICYCLE CHECK EFFECTIVENESS AND ACCEPTANCE IMPROVE AND COMPLEMENT BICING

THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT MODEL FOR INDIVIDUALS USING BICYCLES PILOT TEST OF ELECTRIC BICING: Conclusions Mecanic Service Electric Service Average journey (m) Average level difference per journey (m) -3,68 +8,32 Average time per journey (min) Customers make longer journeys Customers make more ascending journeys. Positive level difference. It is more used by men than by women (63% men y 37% women) Not all users prefer an electric bicycle. Frequent users of the electric bicycles are very satisfied with this service. The lack of use immediacy and low network density penalizes its use.
Bikesharing in Barcelona 03 THE FUTURE OF BIKESHARING 12
Bikesharing in Barcelona THE FUTURE OF BIKESHARING: THE NEW BICING CONTRACT Increase in the number of bicycles: (6,000 mechanical i 1,000 electric) Extension of territorial coverage and number of stations: (424 to 519 stations) Expand service hours at 24h The new Bicing contract New format of stations which includes hybrid anchorages Individual anchorage of the bicycles Willingness to use new technologies (NFC, App Contactless...) 13
THE FUTURE OF BIKESHARING: THE NEW BICING CONTRACT Extension of territorial coverage and availability of the Bicing. The implementation of the new Bicing stations responds to the desire to improve the service and encourage the use of bicycles in the city. This project aims to: Extend the territorial coverage of the Bicing, creating new stations in areas where it is currently not present. Create new stations to support current stations and standardize the distribution of stations in the territory (300m distance between stations) 14
THE FUTURE OF BIKESHARING: THE NEW BICING CONTRACT 15
THE FUTURE OF BIKESHARING: OTHER BIKESHARING SYSTEMS One way system Regular use Occasional use Bycicle renthal companies Dockless systems REGULATION 16
THE FUTURE OF BIKESHARING: OTHER BIKESHARING SYSTEMS Objectives of regulation Promote more sustainable, efficient and safe mobility in the city. Reduce the use of the private vehicle and the fleet of cars and motorcycles. Provide more slow and flexible mobility Guarantee the right to mobility of those who do not have a private vehicle Encourage and promote the modal exchange between public transport and all sharing systems Improve citizens quality of life reducing local emissions, atmospheric pollution, noise and the visual impact of private vehicles. 17
THE FUTURE OF BIKESHARING: OTHER BIKESHARING SYSTEMS Vision of the City Council Bikesharing models should coexist with the city's public bicycle service, Bicing, which is a one-way system. Therefore, it is wanted to promote the dockless freefloating bikesharing models, as opposed to one-way systems. It is a complementary service to local mobility and conventional bicycle rental, as it will be able to offer rent to the tourist outside of the local business hours. To avoid the problems associated with the occupation of public space, its surface parking will be regulated. 18
THE FUTURE OF BIKESHARING: OTHER BIKESHARING SYSTEMS Positive impacts of bikesharing systems They help to reduce atmospheric pollution, noise and local emissions. Bikesharing encourages the use of the bicycle. They influence the behavior of the travelers, since it increases the supply of means of transport, increasing the intermodality and favoring the use of the public transport and the displacement on foot. It is a good option to cover connection journeys or delivery of small packages by courier companies. Bikesharing in a limited number complements public bicycle and public rental systems. 19
THE FUTURE OF BIKESHARING: OTHER BIKESHARING SYSTEMS Negative impacts of bikesharing systems Strong occupation of public space, which can reach its privatization. Problems of competition between companies (companies that operate with a license from a local and those that do without a license in the street). Bikesharing generates overcrowding in the parking lot and hinders the rotation of bicycles. Lack of civility in the parking of motorcycles and bicycles, which is difficult to control for companies if they do not have geolocated vehicles or if they do not have a strict internal control system. Therefore, a clear and coherent legal framework must be established between all the sharing systems that allow operators to take advantage of the systems in a safe and stable way and allow the City Council to define the uses and spaces determined in the public space and minimize the negative impacts. 20
