Haywards Heath Bike Ride 2018 Frequently Asked Questions As you get ready for your event, we've pulled together some information and the answers to some of the most common questions our cyclists have to help you prepare for the start line. Safety on the highways and lanes around Sussex REMEMBER it is not a race. Be a good advert for cycling and show consideration to other road users - even if they don't respect your space. YOU MUST wear your official rider number on the day attached to your bike. YOU MUST wear a helmet during your ride. NEVER ride more than two abreast. DO NOT attempt any dangerous passing. It is forbidden to cross the centre line of the road. Keep your distance from other cyclists at all times, as some may be inexperienced. Don't go mad down hills. Please signal any intention to turn left or right and don't stop suddenly - there may be cars or other cyclists directly behind you. NEVER cycle on the pavement or a footpath unless instructed by a Ride Marshal SLOW DOWN when passing horses. Indicate your presence (by bell or calling out) and pass wide on the right. Horses can be dangerous when startled. Please do not ask friends or family to drive along the course. Private support vehicles are not allowed on the route during the event, as this could be hazardous for other cyclists and may obstruct emergency vehicles. All riders aged 60 or over on the date of the ride and any rider with a medical condition or unsure of their physical ability to take part in the bike ride are advised to take medical advice from a general practitioner prior to the event.

A sponsorship form is available on the website Do I have to raise a minimum amount of sponsorship? You don't have to raise money for charity you can take part in the ride for fun. We put the entrance fee to our chosen charitable cause as we re all volunteers and obviously would love others to give to their chosen charity. A Sponsorship form can be found on the website! However, many riders raise money for different charities who rely on the sponsor money you raise, so we encourage all riders to raise sponsorship. When you check in on the day please inform the registration official if you have decided to change your route.

Is a copy of the route map available before the ride? GPS maps of the routes are available for download after successfully registering on each individual ride. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CREATED A USER ACCOUNT DURING THE REGISTRATION PROCESS and then login to your account area (link in grey menu bar at the top of the page) using the address and password entered during registration. You'll find a link to the GPX file in the menu on the left of the page. There will also be a printed route map - showing rest stop locations and support service contact details - available on the day of the ride. Are all your rides on road? All our rides are on road, unless otherwise stated - please check individual ride pages and maps on the website for details. I've just signed up for a ride. How do I create an online giving page? You are responsible for organising this yourself. In the past some of the riders have chosen to use the Just Giving website. Who is the ride suitable for? As we offer four routes, the ride is suitable for all abilities. We do recommend that you train for which ever route you do so that your body gets used to the main pressure points on a bike, saddle (backside) and handlebars (hands and arms). Do I have to wear a cycling helmet? All riders must wear helmets. We are required for health and safety and insurance reasons to enforce this policy on our mass participation events both to protect you (the rider) and ourselves as organisers. Where are the toilet stops? These are clearly marked on the route maps. Where can I get a drink of water? Bottled water will be provided at the start and finish as well as certain points along the route. These points are clearly marked as on the route maps. What type of bike do I need? You do not need a specialist bike for this event, but what you do need is bike with gears and you should ensure these are working properly before the day and that you know how to use them. Only bicycles (two wheeled, non powered cycles) must be ridden. Can I use a mountain bike on an on road event? Road bikes are best suited for these events, but not essential. You are welcome to take part on a mountain bike but be aware this will make your ride more challenging. You may want to consider changing your tyres to road tyres. This will make the ride smoother and quicker. What happens if I have a mechanical problem on a ride? TO DEAL WITH SIMPLE PUNCTURES, WE ADVISE THAT ALL RIDERS BRING ALONG A PUNCTURE REPAIR KIT AND PUMP. If you need further help, we provide a number of cycle mechanics - either mobile or static - to help with any problems. Just call the emergency number shown on the route map given out on the day and we'll either direct a mobile mechanic to where you are or a pick up vehicle can relay you and your bike to the nearest static mechanic (typically situated at refreshment stops). Most problems with brakes, tyres, pedals and chains can be dealt with at the roadside. The service is free but a charge may be made for any replacement parts needed. If your problem cannot be resolved by the mechanic, you and your bike will be relayed either to the start or finish point, as appropriate.

What happens if I have a medical problem on the ride? All rides are covered by qualified first-aiders - typically either St. John's Ambulance or the British Red Cross. If you have an accident or feel unwell, or witness an accident or rider experiencing medical difficulties, simply call the emergency number shown on the route map given out on the day and we'll direct a first-aider / ambulance to where you are. In the event of further medical assistance being needed, riders will be taken to the nearest available A&E department, as appropriate. RIDERS REQUIRING REGULAR MEDICATION SHOULD BRING THEIR MEDICINES WITH THEM. IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBTS ABOUT YOUR FITNESS OR ABILITY TO COMPLETE THE RIDE, PLEASE SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE IN ADVANCE. Riding with children or animals? Who is responsible for children participating in the ride? Parents must take responsibility for their children participating in the ride. If your child decides to finish the route before you or leave the ride you must ensure the organisers are informed either when you complete the route or contacting them through the emergency contact number given to you. Can I bring a child in their bicycle child seat / using a trailer bike on the ride? In general, we do not allow the carriage of small children using child seats or on 'tag-along' type trailer bikes, although they are welcome on the shorter routes. This is due partly to safety considerations: the possible dangers posed by vehicular traffic (our rides always taking place on open roads) or by other participant cyclists (the possibility of collisions between riders being increased the more riders there are in a given space). In addition, weather conditions on the day may be unsuitable for the carriage of a small child for extended periods. Can I bring my dog in my bike basket? No. The carriage of, or accompaniment by, dogs or any other animal is not allowed on any ride. The Day of the Haywards Heath Bike Ride Where does the ride start and finish? The Bike Ride starts from The Broadway, Haywards Heath. Everyone leaves from the start at 8.45 a.m. Riders taking part in the longer routes will be started first. The Bike Ride finishes at The Broadway, Haywards Heath. Everyone is expected to check in officially on their return.

How far is a 'long ride'? This depends on you! Firstly, you will need to build up to your intended race distance. Then, depending on how many weeks you have to train, you need to aim to improve your endurance by gradually increasing the distance you ride. A gradual increase of up to 10% is a sensible balance which will allow your body to adapt to the increased workload. We advise that you only increase the duration of your long ride in your training. Training is about doing as much you can without becoming exhausted or injured. How much food should I take with me on a ride? You are responsible for your own food intake and hydration to ensure your health and safety. What should I wear? You are also responsible for ensuring that you and your children are suitable clothed and equipped for the ride and weather conditions on the day. Do I need to know how to fix a puncture? Ideally yes. It may be worth attending a bike maintenance course to learn the basics. Most of the time it s better to carry a spare inner tube and change that if you get a puncture while out on a ride. You can then fix the puncture later at home. It s also important to make sure that your tyres are correctly inflated before you go out. Do I really need to stretch? Stretching allows you to maintain a full range of movement in the muscles and helps to prevent injury. It s key to do this after your bike ride. If the session has been intense or if it s been very cold, it s better to stretch after you ve warmed up. It's also important to warm up before you start cycling, not doing this can lead to pulled muscles. What if I am unable to finish the ride or decide to finish early? Riders who unable to complete the ride, for whatever reason, MUST call the emergency number given to you at Registration. If you have mechanical difficulties we'll direct a pick up vehicle to relay you and your bike to either the start or finish, as appropriate. If you decide not to complete the ride please contact us on one of these numbers as all entries must be checked back, as well as being checked in, this will allow the organisers to know that they are safe and do not have to start looking for them.

Do I have to complete the Bike Ride in a set amount of time? The Haywards Heath Bike Ride is not a race. There is no set time in which it needs to be completed. We would recommend riding at a comfortable pace that suits you. Are the roads completely closed off to other traffic on the day? Routes are not closed off from traffic. However, we work very closely with local authorities, the police and highways agency to ensure that the route is enjoyable and safe, whilst still a challenge. Marshals are also along each route to ensure your safety. The start and finish points in The Broadway are closed to traffic on the day of the ride. What is essential to take on the ride? Riders are expected to ensure they are wearing appropriate clothing appropriate to the weather conditions. You should also ensure you use sun protection cream as appropriate. Your bike will need to be in good working order, the tyres at the correct pressure, and brakes in working order, tyres in good order and the chain well oiled. You are also advised to provide your own bottled water and snacks. Although the organisers of the event have arranged for some water and bananas to be available this may not be enough for your personal needs. We recommend you take the following: Spare inner tubes A pump Suitable clothing for all conditions Tyre levers and a multi tool. Energy drink and food You may also consider the following items: Spare folding tyre Chain link tool and spare chain links Spare spokes (tape them to your frame) What about insurance? We have registered the ride with British Cycling and taken advantage of their Event Insurance protecting riders, stewards and organisers against any unforeseen circumstances. We need to advise that this cover is only 3rd Party, so please make sure you have sufficient cover of your own if you need it.

The Routes The Greater Haywards Heath Bike Ride has four great routes all wending their way through the beautiful Mid Sussex countryside. In this case you can pick up a new one from our administration tent at the start of the ride. Can I transfer my booking from one ride route to another? Registrations from one route to another can be transferred to ride in your place if you us with their and your details or when you check in on the day please inform the registration official if you have decided to change your route. Not to worry, we have your date of birth on file and we will automatically move your registration across to an adult record. However, if you do receive a parental consent form requesting your guardian s approval then the team bikeride@bhf.org.uk confirming your date of birth and we will change you manually. As the Bike Ride is on the roads, a road bike is the most efficient to use, however it s not imperative. If you use a mountain bike you are better off replacing the knobbly off-road tyres with slick tyres. This will reduce the friction and therefore make the job easier for you. The main thing is to ensure your bike is road-worthy before you set off. We expect all riders to wear a helmet as this can reduce any head injuries in case of an accident. You will not be allowed to take part in the ride if you are not wearing a helmet. Do I have to complete the Bike Ride in a set amount of time? The Haywards Heath Bike Ride is not a race. 16 The Greater Haywards Heath BIKE RIDE OUR GOLDEN RULES AND SAFETY NOTICE Participants will be responsible for the roadworthiness and safe working order of their own cycle. If the event is to be held in poor or little light, then front and rear lights must be used and must have adequate battery life for the duration of the event. Cycling can be strenuous and riders must be in good health and reasonably fit. It is the responsibility of all riders to ensure they are medically fit to take part in the Bike Ride. If you have a medical condition which may be adversely affected by exercise (particularly a heart condition) or if you are in any doubt about your health you must get clearance from your doctor before participating. If you are not a regular cyclist we recommend that you take a bike ride two or three times a week for several weeks prior to the event, gradually increasing the distance you cycle. The use of triathlon handlebars or other bar extensions is discouraged in Everyday Cycling events for safety reasons. However, where riders do have them fitted they must not be used when riding in a group and riders must allow for a gap to the rider(s) in front that allows time to reach for their breaks if necessary. No accompanying vehicles are allowed to follow riders. Any participant failing to observe this regulation will be withdrawn from the event. I understand and accept that this event is not a race or trial of speed, but a personal challenge and as such there will be no list published which sorts riders either in finishing time or finishing position order. An alphabetical list of finishers and times will be published. I accept and understand that where the event takes place on the open road I must abide by the Highway Code at all times. I am aware that when riding on a public highway the function of marshals is only to indicate direction and that I must decide whether the movement is safe. We strongly recommend the wearing of Hard Shell Style Helmets for riders under the age of eighteen; riders over eighteen are also encouraged to do the same. All participants under the age of eighteen shall have had a consent form completed by their parent/guardian. A parent or guardian must accompany riders under the age of sixteen. I understand and agree that I participate in this event entirely at my own risk, that I must rely on my own ability in dealing with all hazards, and that I must ride in a manner which is safe to myself and others. I accept that if I do not abide by these terms and conditions that the organisers will make all reasonable efforts to remove me from the event, and that British Cycling will us all effort to restrict participation in future British Cycling competitive and non-competitive events. I agree that no liability whatsoever shall attach to the promoter, promoting club/organisation, event sponsor, British Cycling or any event official or member of British Cycling or member of the promoting club /organisation in respect of any injury, loss or damage suffered by me in or by reason of the event, unless such injury, loss or damage is proven to be caused by the negligence of the aforementioned. I agree to abide by the British Cycling Regulations for non-competitive cycling events and understand and agree that I participate in this event entirely at my own risk, that I must rely on my own ability in dealing with all hazards, and that I must ride in a manner which is safe to myself and others. I am aware that when riding on a public highway the function of marshals is only to indicate direction and that I must decide whether the movement is safe. I agree that no liability whatsoever shall attach to the promoter, promoting club /Organisation, event sponsor, British Cycling or any event official or member of British Cycling or member of the promoting club / organisation in respect of any injury, loss or damage suffered by me in or by reason of the event however caused. Subject to that reservation, I shall submit to any dispute that may arise exclusively to the courts. I have read and agree to abide by the above declarations.
