3 Welcome to the Tour de Bintan! I am thrilled that you have chosen to join us for this world-class race. In 2017, we became a UCI Gran Fondo World Series event, and saw 45 athletes make their way to Albi, France for the World Championships and an unforgettable cycling experience. If you are here aiming to qualify for the 2018 Gran Fondo World Championships in Varese, Italy, then we wish you the best of luck. Our partnership with UCI has been a positive one. We have seen record participant numbers this year, with athletes travelling from 28 different countries. Not wanting to rest on our laurels, we have worked hard to enrich various areas of the event, with an enhanced Gran Fondo Classic route, fabulous merchandise range by Cuore, post-event massage on Saturday, and a relaxing Garden Party Saturday evening. A huge thank you goes to our event partner Nirwana Gardens, tourism partners Wonderful Indonesia, Bintan Breathtaking Journey, Bintan Regency and Bintan Resorts. Without their invaluable support we would not be able to host this unique event. All the best for a successful race, and an enjoyable stay in Bintan. Like the Classics, the Tour de Bintan is a race of attrition. The tropical climate and the relentless small hills in combination with a very competitive field have always delivered a hard and very exciting race. The new loop through Kijang for the Gran Fondo Classic will add to the spectacle, as a big crowd is expected to welcome you to the capital of the Bintan region like world champions. In the midst of all the action, please do take a moment to enjoy the beautiful roads and natural beauty that makes Bintan such a great cycling destination. The ride will lead you past white sand beaches, lush green jungle, plantations, and local villages with some magnificent scenic views. Finally, I would like to say kudos to the growing number of new cyclists visiting the island who will take part in the 55km, 82km and also the longer distance rides. 4 Your passport needs to be valid for at least six months from your date of arrival in Bintan, Indonesia. Indonesia s currency is the Rupiah (USD 1 = approx IDR 13,739, S$1 = IDR 10,400). Singapore Dollars or US Dollars are not accepted in Bintan. All payments shall be made in Rupiah (including at the event expo). Hotels have money changers and some of them (incl. Nirwana Gardens) have an ATM. Note that all times for the Tour de Bintan are in Bintan Time (GMT+07:00), which is one hour behind Singapore (Singapore 8:00am = Bintan 7:00am). We recommend that you have your own comprehensive medical and accident insurance that covers you for cycling in Indonesia. This is not required for this event. 4

5 Your ferry to Bintan leaves from the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal (TMFT), 50 Tanah Merah Ferry Road. Please arrive 2 hours before departure at the ferry terminal. IMPORTANT: Bring along your Bintan hotel booking information (print or digital copy) to help you with your bike check-in 1. Prepare your bike: Remove all accessories and pedals, if wheeling your bike 2. Advise check-in staff which hotel you are staying 3. Collect boarding pass and coloured bike tag 4. Bike check-in: Place the coloured bike tag on your top tube 5. Keep your white bike tag for the return journey! Taxi Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal is only minutes from Changi Airport. Be aware that a bike box does not fit in a standard taxi. You will need to request a maxi cab at the Singapore airport transportation counter. It costs a flat S$60 and can fit 2 bike boxes. Alternatively, us if you need some assistance with transportation. Shuttle Bus A new public shuttle bus service is operating between Singapore s Changi Airport and Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. The fare is S$2.00 per person per journey. Detailed information is available here. 5

This applies to all cyclists regardless of where you are staying. Your bike will be transferred to the ferry terminal and checked in for you. You only need to collect it on arrival in Singapore. 7 Three airlines (Garuda Air, Lion Air and Sriwijaya Air) have direct daily domestic flights from Jakarta to Bintan (Tanjung Pinang, Raja Haji Fisabilillah airport). Be sure to check with the airline the conditions, cost and any packing requirements for transporting your bike. On arrival at Tanjung Pinang, transfers from the airport to the race venue at Nirwana Gardens Resort takes minutes. Local taxis can t fit bike boxes / bags but your hotel or travel agent will be able to arrange transfers. Alternatively, we will be able to assist you us at tourdebintan@metasport.com. A direct ferry from Johor Bahru, Malaysia to Bintan Island is available. It departs from the Zon Stulang Laut International Ferry Terminal and arrives at Tanjung Pinang Sri Bintan Pura Ferry Terminal. The ferry duration is approximately 2 hours 45 minutes. To arrange transfers for yourself and your bike from Tanjung Pinang Sri Bintan Pura Ferry terminal, contact your hotel or travel agent. 8 Friday, 23 March, Individual Time Trial Plaza Lagoi The ITT venue is approximately 9km from Nirwana Gardens. Cyclists may ride there from their respective hotels (a great warm-up!) or take the shuttle bus. Saturday, 24 March, Classic 144km and Challenge 82km Simpang Lagoi Start The start and finish venue on Saturday is located 15km from Nirwana Gardens. Cyclists have the option to ride the hilly(!) road there as part of their warm-up or take the shuttle bus provided by the Official Hotel Partners. Supporters and spectators are welcome on the shuttle buses, but priority is given to riders. Check the SHUTTLE BUS SCHEDULE > IMPORTANT BIKE TRANSFER INFO: Cyclists planning to take the shuttle to Simpang Lagoi must deposit their bikes at the Nirwana Gardens Bike Depot or their respective hotel depot before Friday evening 10pm. Cyclists who decide to cycle to Simpang Lagoi must remove their bike from the Nirwana Gardens Bike Depot before Friday evening 10pm. Sunday, 25 March, Century 111km - Nirwana Gardens Start Participants staying at Official Hotel Partners have the option to ride to Nirwana Gardens as part of their warm-up or take the shuttle service provided by their hotel. Note that no bike transfers will occur from partner hotels to Nirwana Gardens overnight on Saturday night or on race morning. You can leave your bike at the bike depot in Simpang Lagoi for transfer to Nirwana Gardens bike depot after Saturday s stage. Sunday, 25 March, Discovery 55km Bintan Ferry Terminal Start Participants staying at Official Hotel Partners have the option to ride to Bintan Ferry Terminal as part of their warm-up or take the shuttle service for themselves and their bikes provided by their hotel. All buses and shuttles from Nirwana Gardens depart from and return to the bus stop in front of the Suria Room Foyer of the Nirwana Resort Hotel (where Race Kit Collection takes place). 8

You will not be able to collect your race kit on Saturday morning for the Classic or Challenge ride. IMPORTANT: Each cyclist is required to personally collect his/her race kit and sign the event waiver on Friday. Race entries are non-transferable to another person Collection on behalf is not allowed and misrepresentation will lead to disqualification. Changing category is no longer allowed Compulsory Race Briefing Race Briefing is compulsory for ALL cyclists. The race briefing will be in a video format playing all day on Friday 23rd March at Nirwana Resort Hotel, Suria Room (next to Race Kit Collection). It will restart every 20 minutes. Athletes joining a travel-easy package will be able to watch the video on the ferry. 9

Every year, cyclists underestimate the challenge of the Tour de Bintan routes. The heat combined with the very undulating terrain of Bintan provides a formidable challenge for all. The hills are not extremely steep or long but the road hardly ever flattens out. We suggest you pace yourself well. 12

Those cyclists who do not reach the cut-off points by the specified cut-off times will unfortunately be disqualified. However, for some of the points you will be given the option to continue the ride via a short cut. Alternatively, you will have the option to hop in the cut-off bus and be transferred to the finish. The commissaire will signal the end of the rolling start and the start of the competition. 22

23 The 17km Individual Time Trial, 144km Gran Fondo Classic and 111km Gran Fondo Century count towards the General Classification. For each age category the cyclist with the fastest accumulated time is the winner and receives the Yellow Jersey. The Yellow Jersey is awarded after every stage and must be worn in the following stage. The Top-3 of the General Classification at the end of the Tour de Bintan receive a trophy. Intermediate Sprints The Gran Fondo Classic (144km) and Century (111km) each have 2 intermediate sprint points. The first three cyclists of each category that pass these points earn bonus seconds for the General Classification Rank Seconds 1 st 10 2 nd 6 3 rd 4 Cyclists can earn points for team based on their performance in their category. 24 Food, drinks and mechanic support is provided on the course. Private support (vehicles, personnel, etc.) are not allowed on the road. Feed Zones Feed Zones are available every 20-30km. These have been placed at the top of hills so that cyclists will be approaching from reduced speed. Cyclists may collect drink bottles from volunteers on the side of the road while cycling slowly through these zones. Other cyclists may welcome the opportunity to stop and enjoy the refreshments on offer at their leisure. Read more about Drink Support. IMPORTANT: Start with full bottles - Start every stage with two full drink bottles on your bike. Bring your own bottles - Bottles will NOT be provided by the race organiser at the beginning of a stage. You need to have your own filled bottles. Fueling - Water, electrolyte drink and snacks will be available at feed zones. However don t rely solely on the drink stations for food, be sure to bring your own nutrition (gels, bars, etc) on the ride as well. Mechanic Support Read the information about the Mechanic Support. Private support is NOT allowed on the road. Wheel Changes/Punctures 1. Wheel changes and puncture repairs are to take place on the left hand side of the convoy/road only. 2. To have a wheel change, put your hand in the air to attract the attention of the mechanic support team. Make sure you have dropped your chain into the smallest ring for a quick change. All borrowed wheels must be returned at the end of the day s ride. 3. You are advised to not fully rely on the neutral wheels and mechanics and bring spare tubes and a repair kit to fix punctures. We suggest you carry two spare tubes and a pump or inflator with CO2 cartridges on your bike during the race. IMPORTANT: Race repairs services during the race are provided free of charge. However, there will be a charge for consumable items such as tubes, tyres, cables, chains, etc. 24

25 Every age group category wave has an ambulance with a doctor following the convoy. Please ensure that your medical conditions and allergies are known to us and that you have given us a current emergency contact. You will need to fill out the back of your race numbers with this information as well. If you have any medical concerns about your participation, please contact us now at tourdebintan@metasport.com or look for the Medical Service Manager on race weekend. The priority for the Medical Team is to look after you during the race. For any non-race-related illnesses or injuries, please contact your hotel clinic. If you are in serious trouble during your ride and need medical or mechanical assistance then please call our hotline (if dialing from a Singapore phone ). We recommend you save this number in your phone prior to the race. Cyclists are reminded to familiarize themselves with the race rules and regulations. Below are a few important ones. Triathlon or time trial bikes, disc wheels, aerobars, aero helmets, sleeveless shirts, bottle cage holders behind the seat and wheels with less than 12 spokes are not allowed at any time. Check the equipment section of the rules and regulations for all rules. These equipment rules apply for the prologue too. You must wear your number bibs visible on the rear of your jersey, and attach the bike flag to your seat post. Bike cameras are permitted. Protests must be lodged within 15 minutes after the finish of the stage via an official appeal form at the information booth. A fee of RP 1,000,000 will apply. 25

27 In order for everyone to have a safe and memorable ride, we would like you to take note of the following: 1. Roads are Not Closed The police will attempt a rolling road closure and stop traffic as the peloton of each age group category passes. However, normal road rules still apply. Riders are to keep as close as safely practical to the left hand side of the road, whether in a peloton or not. The Police have the right to stop the race as they see fit due to any safety concerns that may arise. 2. Point Out Hazards The local government makes a tremendous effort every year to provide good road conditions for the tour. However there may still be some areas with hazards. Warn riders behind you of any immediate danger: potholes, humps, rough road, sharp corners, etc. 3. Feed Zone safety Please be aware at feed zones that some cyclists will be stopping to collect their drinks. If you want to collect drinks on the move, please cycle slowly through this area exercising caution to avoid clashes with other bikes. 4. Drinking on the Move Don t forget to drink amidst all the excitement. Once you start to feel thirsty, the chance that you are dehydrated is high. That is likely to affect your ride and potentially result in a heat injury. 5. Ride Safely Don t put yourself or other riders in danger by swerving or sudden braking. Negotiate sideway movements carefully. Be considerate. 27

28 Once you cross the line we will provide you with lunch so you can sit back, relax, and share race stories at the finish venue in Simpang Lagoi. The Awards Ceremony will take place from 12:30pm. The Sunday post-race activities, including bike depot, lunch, awards ceremony, first aid centre, information, bag deposit & collection will take place beachside at the Nirwana Gardens Sea Sport Centre. It is a 200m roll from the finish line. The post-race lunch buffet will be open from 11:00 to 14:00. The Awards ceremony will take place during the lunch at 12:30pm. 28

29 The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Gran Fondo World Series is a series of UCIsanctioned races held all over the world. Tour de Bintan is one of the only 2 races in Asia and 22 in the world where participants can obtain their ticket for the official UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in their age group. The UCI Gran Fondo World Championships will crown the new UCI World Champions in Road Racing and Time-trial in Varese, Lombardia (Italy). Tour de Bintan UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifier races: Friday, 23 March Individual Time Trial 17KM Saturday, 24 March Gran Fondo Classic 144KM How to qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championship: The top 25% of each age category on 17km Individual Time Trial and 144km Gran Fondo Classic qualifies for the World Championship. The top 3 winners of an age category always qualifies regardless of the number of cyclists in the category. If you earned a championships slot, you will receive a UCI medal and jersey. You will collect it at the Information Booth. 29
