Welcome to Boxing NSW Newsletter My name is Joe Walker and on behalf Boxing NSW I am proud to be able to bring you our first edition of hopefully a monthly newsletter to keep you up to date with news and upcoming events, employment opportunities and anything else that may be relevant or interesting to our network. I will source content from our website at as well as our Facebook Page But please please me at newsletter@boxing.org.au with any fight poster or content you would like go out to the roughly s at present we have on our database. I will pretty much insert anything that is relevant to Boxing NSW as long as it not divisive, abusive or in breach of Boxing NSW or Boxing Australia s code of ethics. I am very happy to receive feedback on what you would like to see more of or less of in the newsletter and I aim to introduce each month a committee member or perhaps an official with a short Bio so we can all get to know each other better. I will start with myself this month later in the newsletter and give a brief idea how I got here and how I would like to contribute to Boxing in NSW. In the short time I have been involved with the committee I have learnt many things that I didn t know were available to all members of Boxing NSW and I would especially like to share these things as it could really help develop our already great sport by getting more people involved at grass roots level which hopefully ultimately flow on to elite levels and Australia becoming a major force in World Amateur Boxing or Olympic Boxing as I like to call it. I have really enjoyed my journey so far and look forward to meeting and talking with the many great and passionate people that keep this sport alive and thriving in NSW. Of course if you don t want to receive this newsletter simply reply unsubscribe or press the unsubscribe link and we will endeavour to not bother you again but I hope you can put up with one per month and even get round to reading it occasionally. Become a Voting Member of Boxing NSW Did you know that you can become a voting member of Boxing NSW to attend the AGM and even campaign to get yourself voted onto the committee? You don t have to be a Coach, competitor, official in fact there are plenty of mums and grandmothers on the voting register. This way you can be part of the decisions that impact the running of Boxing in NSW and as Boxing NSW is a member state o Boxing Australia you even have a say in how Boxing Australia is run nationally and internationally. If you don t like that joe Walker guy Vote him out when he comes up for re-election and so on so don t whinge vote and if committed enough become involved and put yourself up for election. So go to and fill in the form to become a voting member and the application will be reviewed by the committee. The cost of membership is $100 first year and then $30 per annum thereafter. Get the best seats in the house Boxing Australia requires that to be in a competitors corner at a Boxing Australia sanctioned competition that all coaches to be qualified with a minimum of Level 1 Coaching Course. This is nationally recognized qualification recognized within the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCSAS) overseen by the Australian Sports Commission. The course itself is $300 but the qualification lasts four years and if you are cornering at competitions you almost always get in free so over the four years it is possible to make your money back several times over. As a coach having members who are qualified to help in the corner is gold regardless of their competitive coaching experience You must be attached to Boxing Gym or approved otherwise Coaching Coordinator Dean Groth - dean.w.groth@gmail.com

Boxing Australia Summary 2016 My apologies if I miss something important and if I do please let me know and I will be sure to correct it in the next Newsletter but here are the major highlights for 2016 from our perspective. Of course the main focus was the Olympics in Rio in August first with national qualification and then through qualifying tournaments. This is the first Olympics that Australia had to qualify via Asia and Oceania instead of by Oceania alone which has made it much harder for Australia to qualify meaning in the end only Daniel Lewis, Shelley Watts and Jason Whateley were able to pack their kit bound for Rio. Perhaps the silver lining is that with fewer actually qualifying the High Performance coaching team at the AIS can concentrate their resources on a few to achieve better results and although we didn t medal at the Olympics that our elite boxers are now getting amongst the medals in major international tournaments that include the strong countries in international boxing it really seems it s only a matter of time before Australia becomes a recognized player on the world stage. Although both Daniel and Shelley were living at the AIS for the years before they both hail from NSW originally meaning 2 out of the three that qualified are from NSW. Talk about steal the Olympians thunder though after missing out to Caitlin Parker for the chance to qualify for Rio at 75kg Kaye Scott NSW moved up to 81kg and won silver at the Women's World Championships SILVER FOR SCOTT BRINGS MIXED FEELINGS Published Sat 28 May Story by Ross Solly From Boxing Australia website To mere mortals, winning a silver medal and cementing your standing as the second best athlete in your field in the world would be a cause for major celebration. But Australian boxer Kaye Scott said winning silver at the Women s Boxing World Championships in Kazakhstan gave her mixed emotions. Second place is kind of bittersweet, Scott said after losing her gold medal bout against China s reigning world 75kg champion, Yang Xiaoli. You have the disappointment of losing your bout, but then being strung straight away into the arena for the medal ceremony. But that aside, Scott said she could not be unhappy with becoming Australia s most successful amateur boxer at a World Championships ever. I m extremely proud of what I ve achieved at this tournament, she said. I ve worked damn hard for a long time, and finally it was my time to shine. Boxing is my passion, and I feel I ve grown as an athlete dramatically in the last two years. But I still have plenty more room to improve and be competitive on the international scene. 31-year-old Scott, who just missed earning the right to box for Australia in the 75kg Olympic category, said she will now focus on preparing for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. Australia also picked up bronze at the World Championships, with Queensland s Skye Nicolson losing her semi -final bout to China s Yang Wenlu. It was Australia s most successful World Championships ever. The year was then rounded out with an incredible first gold medal at the Youth World Championships St Petersburg Russia November by Queensland s Justin Huni with a bronze going to NSW Sam Goodman. A strong showing for Boxing Australia this year with much of the accolades going to Boxing NSW hopefully this will keep going into 2017 and the Commonwealth games in Brisbane in Kaye Scott & Skye Nicolson World Women s Championships 2016 Justis Huni Youth World Youth Championships 2016

BLACKBELT PRO How to make money through Amateur Boxing I apologize for the somewhat controversial headline but as someone who makes his living by teaching amateur boxing only no professionals no MMA no weights area and I don t separate competitors and non-competitors everybody trains the same, I wish to get across that if you want it is possible to stay pure to the sport and still make a living. It doesn t mean that there s anything wrong with those other services and there are many ways to do it and that will be the point of this section to help competitors and coaches alike get ways of earning income whether full or part time and be able to stay in our sport for longer and grow our base. In coming issues we will explore different ways to do this whether it is within a Boxing Gym or Fitness Gym or as a Personal Trainer or even a promoter or administrator. Become part of the Black Belt Pro Team Black Belt Pro in Randwick is looking for a boxing coach to join the team in 2017 teaching 1-2 classes per week. Contact Cindy Boniface or cindy@blackbeltpro.com Employment opportunity for a boxing coach Bill Holland from a gym in Hornsby looking for a boxing instructor to coach a group Thursday at 6pm. You would probably have to have certificate III certification and have some sort of insurance to be eligible. If interested contact Bill directly on or their website has a contact Boxing Australia has released two Boxing products in an effort to appeal to a larger audience for Boxing and provide Boxing gyms or Fitness gyms with an extra revenue stream. In essence these two programs are the same but the Train like a Boxer program is for use in registered Boxing Academies under Boxing Australia where the Trainer can be accredited as a Train like a Boxer fitness coach without necessarily being a level 1 coach and still be insured under our umbrella insurance scheme. Fitbox below is for Fitness gyms where Certificate III is required to be able to teach. Garry Wasson is in charge of both these products. FitBox for fitness professionals Boxing Australia has released this product for the Fitness Market with the luxury of earning being able to get nearly half the points required to stay registered in one hit. For those who have or are studying for Certificate III or IV in Fitness keep this in mind as you will be qualified to coach in Fitness Gyms or Personal Training. For those coaching here or in a boxing club I would recommend the Level 1 coaching course before this but if you want to be a fitness professional this is the one to get. Fitness professionals earn 8 CECS points with our FitBox course only $300 new course running 17th December Blue Cattle Dog Boxing St Clair Sydney Contact Garry Wasson garry.wasson@boxing.org.au

AIS Development Camp Open to All Levels Boxing Australia will be holding a user-pay camp at the AIS January National Development Coach and 2012 and 2016 Olympic Coach Don Abnett will lead the camp. The cost of $300 will include airport transfers, accommodation, meals and training sessions. The price does not include flights which are the responsibility of the individual. The camp is open for boxers of all skill levels. There will be 8 training sessions plus a night presentation. Places are limited to 24 people, register at josh.obrien@boxing.org.au. For more information call Don Abnett on HISTORY MAKING HUNI TURNS HIS SIGHTS TO GOLD COAST 2018 Published Fri 02 Dec 2016 Boxing Australia Website 17-year-old Australian boxer Justis Huni has returned to Australia a gold medallist and Youth World Champion, but the enormity of his achievements are yet to fully sink in for the Queensland teenager. But for those in the know, Huni s success was never in doubt. The three-time Golden Gloves champion and four-time Australian champion had already shown the determination needed to succeed at the top level. In 2015, Huni broke his ankle on the eve of attending an important boxing camp in Thailand. He decided to go along anyway. I gained a wealth of experience despite the injury, he said. And this week the pain of that broken ankle seemed inconsequential, when Huni became the first Australian to ever win a world youth title. He outclassed highly-rated Georgian, Giorgi Tchigladze, in the final of the super-heavyweight at the Youth World Championships in St Petersburg, Russia. I felt like I was on top of the world when my hand was raised and my name was called out, Huni said. I can't even describe how happy I was. I will never forget that moment, as it was a very emotional experience. All the hard work I put in to get to that very moment all paid off, and it was all worth it, every bit of it. Huni, who is coached in Logan by his father, Rocki, and Mark Wilson, beat athletes from some of the best boxing nations in the world on his way to the gold medal, including American Richard Torrez in a hard-fought semi-final. He also outclassed boxers from Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Armenia. Huni said he had a point to prove and felt confident before the Championships that he could go all the way. I was feeling nervous heading into the finals, but I knew I had the ability to win the fight, he said. I took it all in as positive energy and told myself that I could do this. Hopefully this result can help me get sponsorship to help financially. This result has also given me the opportunity to be recognized, not only all over Australia, but worldwide for my talent, hard work and dedication in the sport of boxing. Huni has good boxing pedigree, with his Uncle, George, and cousin, Hone, both accomplished boxers and strong influences on Justis s career, which started when he was just six years old. His next major boxing goal won t require him travelling half-way around the world. He hopes to be heading just down the road to compete at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, and has also set his sights on the Olympics, possible as early as Tokyo 2020.

On the Committee profile Joe Walker Over the next issues I will profile a different committee member each time and how and why they came to be on the committee and the skills they bring to Boxing NSW. For expediency I have chosen myself first but it should be known I have only been on the committee a couple of months so am a raw recruit but am very impressed with what I see so far. I am the owner of Joe s Boxing Club Sydney located in Five Dock and am lucky enough to own my studio and it is now 20 years I have been there and before that in Chippendale for 4 years before starting in scout halls from I didn't box competitively myself with my sporting career being in karate spanning 28 years and competing internationally and living New York competing on the American circuit in the early 1990 s. I was always better with my hands anyway and trained in boxing & kickboxing with Alex Tui and John Iaannou. I started my first boxing/kickboxing program in 1993 but wasn t till 2000 that Joe s Boxing brand was born. In 2008 I stopped teaching karate and the following year we started into Boxing Australia competitions. I was lucky enough to have had Justann Crawford two time Olympian, 9 times Australian Champion train in some of my karate classes in 2005, he was a fish out of water with that but later really helped us make the transition into competition and still is a huge asset to our school and I hope soon he can be used as an asset for whole of Boxing NSW. Born in 1958 I just had my 58th Birthday originally from New Zealand but now a proud Australian Citizen of 30 years. My two daughters Chloe and Eloise 22 & 19 years respectively will both complete university degrees next year very proud dad. It feels like I have been working toward this for a long time as my Degree in Economics, 20 years in IT, knowledge of accounting plus being on the board of a Public Company from , and even the latest study in Politics and languages feel like valuable tools in this new role especially with some of the language that has been thrown the way of the committee of late. However I am hopeful that with the current mix of skills and honesty we have on the current committee that peace, harmony and democracy can now be the norm and we can build on the good work done previously. I am happy to say too that Boxing NSW is in a sound financial position which is always a great start when coming into something like this. My aim is to work on ways that we can maximize service and revenue so we can support more competitors for travel and competition. Expand the competitive base by providing tools and support to encourage more people to become full time coaches. Of particular interest to me is to push our message west especially into areas where there is a high concentration of Indigenous folk such as Bourke, Brewarrina, Walgett etc. I come to serve I want none and will take no reward from this I am proud to be a part of Boxing NSW. Rules Referees and Judging I look at referees in awe, not that I agree with their decisions but the dedication of being at the competitions and sitting through usually 15 to 25 fights and having to concentrate the whole time otherwise run the risk of incurring the wrath of coaches and supporters if the decision is not seen as fair. I know I struggle to understand how many decisions are derived and that is why Steve Ryan is now going to be doing a session as part of each Level 1 Coaching course to help coaches know the rules as well as the criteria judges are using to decide contests. Remember the rules are their to protect our fighters and make the fights as fair to all as possible plus and are dictated to us by AI- BA. Not knowing or not following the rules can be devastating to a fighter as was the case with my fighter a few weeks ago who fought a hard fight against a boy who was winning the match but then was disqualified because he was wearing gel wraps under the legal wraps. It would not have been fair that he was allowed to wear them so we got away with a win we didn t really deserve but the opposition fighter and coach were obviously very disappointed. I have full confidence that Steve Ryan and Andrew Lazich will see that my girls and boys will come home safe so I will accept decisions that don t go my way.

Brain Injury Clinical seminar 7th November 2016 at Royal Rehab Hospital Ryde Sydney Last year around the same time I attended a seminar at Homebush which brought experts on concussion from America as well as local medical practitioners together to discuss the latest in diagnosis and treatment of concussions plus expediting return to play for athletes. This seminar was a little more orientated to medical professionals concentrating more on the clinical process of diagnosing and also seeing where the patient was in the recovery process. I will summarize with what I think are the relevant points for us non-medical people either coaches or parents or carers and how we could recognize brain impairment and what we should do. The first session presented by Barry Willer from the University of Buffalo, and a considered expert on concussion rehab, explained how concussion alters the balance of the Sympathetic system (Controls flight or flight response) and the Parasympathetic system (Allows us to sleep), essentially the heart rate, by being stuck in limbo somewhere between sympathetic and Parasympathetic state, meaning that someone suffering from a brain injury will have a higher resting heart rate than normal, but the heart rate will not be able to raise to the normal maximum, meaning the patient will be exercise intolerant or will tire very quickly. So symptoms of Post Concussion Syndrome could be higher resting heart rate perceived anxiety at rest sympathetic system overdrive (like you perpetually got a fright) In most cases people will recover from one or two concussions but we were told watch out for other conditions that may mask the symptoms of post concussion syndrome. Knowing the student s medical history would help. The main theme though is that active rehab is the way to go by getting the patient on a treadmill and testing the heart rate against what it was before the concussion. The rate of recovery can be monitored so that when they can achieve their maximum effort they can return to full training and ultimately return to play. Finally it was said not everything down sizes to kids.there is more risk of long term injury and especially young women are more susceptible to taking longer to recover and having long term incapacity compared to boys. However I would say that the whole ethos of this is not to stop people doing sport but quite the opposite. Instead says let s play but accept the risks and understand how to treat and recover and get people back to play.
