1 1 The Ship s Log April 2018 Newsletter of the Green Bay Sail and Power Squadron Commander s Message by Wayne Dunbar, AP A unit of District 10, United States Power Squadrons As I write this the weather prognosticators are saying 6 to 10 inches of SNOW. Ich. Should have stayed in FL a couple more weeks. On page 2 of this newsletter is an article from our new SEO Ryan Walker. He has some interesting thoughts and we all need to listen up and hear what he has to say. Also, see an article by Barb Geiger, daughter of P/C Dr. Hal Hoops on page 4. Enjoy and stay tuned for future dialogue with Barb. Following is excerpted from Coastal Angler Magazine that gets to the point: Who doesn t have a smile on their face when they re spending time on the water? You can t help yourself. Boating is getting away from it all. And getting away from it all is always more fun with friends. This is where the United States Power Squadrons America s Boating Club comes in. Enjoying your time on the water with family and friends starts with being safe and responsible while having fun. That s what makes America s Boating Club different than most boating organizations. For over a hundred years, the organization s focus has been on providing unsurpassed boating safety education. But the organizations leadership and members are passionate about a membership that doesn t end on Sunday, and doesn t care if the calendar says it s winter. It s about being together and building community through a variety of events like parties, meetings and even just getting together for no reason at all. Offering classes For Boaters, By Boaters in boat handling, navigation, boat maintenance, weather and related subjects, United States Power Squadrons America s Boating Club serves as a virtual yacht club with boating and social activities for all types of recreational boaters. With over 27,000 members organized into 356 squadrons across the country, America s Boating Club is comprised of families who contribute to their communities by promoting safe boating through education. Squadron members are vital to strengthening the communities they live in and know it s important to live their values by giving back through public service and volunteer opportunities. On page 5 is a summary of the some of the content that your district is working on to take America s Boating Club to the public and our membership. More to follow after the Spring Conference. Spring is around the corner, and before we know it we will be back on the water again! The spring ABC boating course is in full swing. Turn out this year has been excellent with outgoing SEO Gregg Cayce reporting a full class. We even had to place several people on a waiting list at the last minute. We are also currently conducting a 10 -week weather course being split between the spring and the fall. As always, Norm Schroeder is providing top notch instruction for this class. As incoming SEO, I have some big shoes to fill. Gregg Cayce has provided the Squadron with years of dedicated service related to education. He was also a main inspiration for me to join the squadron after taking the ABC course with Terri to get her some formal education with the Rules of the Road. It is an honor to be able to contribute in the same fashion. I hope to use this position to provide some vitality to the squadron via education. Going forward, I am looking at conducting various seminars during the spring and summer. We will be using some of the existing venues to accomplish this. We have also had some space offered to hold seminars at The Boat Yard in Green Bay. This is a rack storage facility focusing mainly on small pleasure craft. I feel this would be a good target audience of some small dose education, with the potential for membership. Right now, I am looking at holding seminars during the week, so we don t interrupt the precious on the water hours of us working stiffs. If you have a class or seminar that you would like to see, I would be more than happy to make it happen. If you would like to donate your time to teach a subject that you have a passion for, I would love to speak with you. Working together we can demonstrate our values to the boating public through education. And through education we can make the water a safer place to be.one boat at a time. Ship s Log Editor:Wayne Dunbar, AP (920) yeaboats@yahoo.com ALL members are invited to contribute. Send articles and/or photos for consideration to the NL Editor. Deadline for the next Ship s Log is the 25th of the preceding month. Printing by Fair Winds. SEO Ryan Walker S/V Andante padiunka@gmail.com

4 4 Unexpected Legacy by Barb Geiger My father, Hal Hoops, passed his love of water to me as easily as Aaron Rogers connected with Jordy Nelson at Lambeau Field. As early as I can remember, my two brothers and I learned to paddle, row, and sail a variety of vessels, from rowboats and canoes to sailboats of gradually increasing size. Hal was a member, instructor, and even Commander of the Green Bay Sail and Power Squadron, so we also learned boating safety and a healthy respect for the forces of nature. After his stroke, Dad, my son Eric, and I began a project that we anticipated would both fulfill his lifetime dream of building a boat and serve as a legacy that could be passed down to future generations. Little did we know how far-reaching that decision would be. Before the Pygmy Boats Osprey Double was finished, I remarried and Gene became part of the boatbuilding team. When Dad passed away in 2010, we finished the coamings, added the hardware, and dedicated the tandem wooden kayak to his memory with a brass plaque on the bow cockpit brace. In 2013, Gene and I paddled the kayak from the Mississippi Headwaters to the Gulf of Mexico, in a faith-inspired service trip. Stopping to volunteer at over two-dozen charities in small towns along the way, we blogged about what they do to help others and connected the organizations with our readers via links on our website. The story of our journey has become a memoir, Paddle for a Purpose, recently released by electio Publishing. Against a backdrop of picturesque settings and the river s changing moods, exciting and often humorous accounts of our adventures mingle with inspiring stories of healing, renewal, beauty, compassion, and trust in God. You can see photo galleries and an interactive map of our journey, as well as follow a link to the publisher s website by visiting Dad and my mom, Fran, were both models of compassion, philanthropy and service for our family. I have dedicated Paddle for a Purpose to both of them, and all the author profits from the sale of the book will be donated to charity, including those featured in the book. The legacy of the little boat that Dad began building years ago has become much more than any of us anticipated in our wildest dreams.
5 5 D/10 Living the Logo Master Plan This Master Plan describes actions, relationships, cultural components and other items which will guide the internal activities and external appearance of the Squadrons of the US Power Squadron s District 10 as they present as America s Boating Club. This Master Plan is intended to harmonize with US Power Squadron s new logo and America s Boating Club designation, and drive changes within District 10 that will increase our organization s appeal to and effectiveness for, current and prospective members, as well as current and prospective clients and supporters. D/10 members have evolved our culture in ways that are significantly different from the extensive history of the US Power Squadron in several areas. This Master Plan incorporates the previously evolved changes and presents additional changes to establish an updated approach to Education and Training, Behavior and Culture, Attire, and Marketing. Education and Training Squadron education programs necessarily have a local focus. Our offerings should emphasize boating skills and on-water experiences with the following components: *In view of widespread competition for licensure training, offer advanced courses where there is an unmet need. *Enable all D10 units to do the Jump Start program, covering this at upcoming D10 Conference. *Use the Jump Start offering to facilitate, improve, and expand relationships with marine vendors (esp. watercraft) and time share entities (ex. My Boat Club) synergistically. *Inform all on the standards for more advanced on-water teaching. *Emphasize on-water skills and advanced courses that serve power, sail and paddle boaters. *Update the Paddle Sports seminar with an on-water aspect, and focus on fresh water as well as sea kayakers. *Help squadrons develop a paddle sport mentor/expert. Behavior and Culture It is important that our squadrons present themselves to the public in ways that are inviting to non-members and to foster an inviting culture of inclusion. Reducing the use of ranks, grades, and military time will foster inclusion in non-members and increase community in members. To support these goals we recommend: *Reduce declaration of rank. Consider substituting officer designations. Ex: Lt./Cdr becomes Education Officer *Except for formal ceremonies, we will stop designating rank in local and district settings. *We will indicate rank as required by National processes. *When addressing each other, use names rather than formal ranks. *Discontinue use of formal ranks in general conversation. Allow the advanced grades to be a credential and not used as a suffix with exceptions for our more formal ceremonies, such as a Change of Watch, Last Horizon, etc. *Reduce the use of military time for meetings, agendas, and communications Attire Goal and Approach: If we de-militarize our attire, we can present a more inclusive and inviting organization. In addition we can make our appearance casual, cool, technical, and appealing to our market. In addition it is important that we respect history and not tell members what to wear assuring that all understand that any apparel is welcome. Marketing/PR/Image Develop and follow a marketing plan that implements the above and as defined in D10 Marketing Plan Template details of which will be available at the D10 website as well as gbsps.org. (members only)
