1 We all won at the Tisza PET Cup III We fished 2.5 tons of garbage from the Tisza We could hardly wait to start! We had been preparing for it for months. We were planning, organizing, raising financial resources, recruiting teams. We embarked on it for the third time with more ambitious goals and determination than ever. We knew that we had launched an unusual enterprise: we would enjoy adventures while collecting the garbage on this territory, rich with extraordinary wildlife. What was the key to success? We needed heavy-duty PET 1 boats and brave crews for the task. There was no shortage of intrepid PET Pirates this year either: we set out with 16 ships and a troop of 100 brave marines. The neighbouring villages, mainly Vásáronamény, Zsurk and Cigánd, helped us in our work. Our generous sponsors contributed to the results both through financial support and by launching their own PET boats. For adequate garbage shipping, enthusiastic volunteers sorted and flattened the bottles, and after that the regional waste managing NGO (Térségi Hulladék-Gazdálkodási Nonprofit Kft.) tackled waste material transportation and recycling. So we broke the record: 2.5 tons of garbage was collected including more than 30,000 plastic bottles!!! 7 The patron of this year s Cup was Ákos Vereckei, who was rowing together with his son and a grandpa in the boat they had built on their own. Before the competition, the two-fold Olympic champion and six-time world champion in kayaking claimed: As a famous person in this sport and the father of an eight- and a nine-year-old, I felt this would be a pleasant activity, and also this way more public attention could be turned to the issue of pollution. The family can do water sports together while learning a lot about environmental protection. I did not have this opportunity when I was growing up. This interesting wall of garbage is located between Tiszaújfalu and Zsurk, on the left bank of the river. Life has already began to conquer the artificial components.

8 We expressed our gratitude for the hospitality of the people of Zsurk with some programme for kids. This year s PET Master, László Róbert Zsíros, is doing tricks with dry ice, the solidifier of the plastic bottles used in boat building. The brides of Cigánd awaited us with their famous pastry and heartfelt hospitality. We would also like to thank the people of Cigánd for the hard work the men did after the Cup, in disassembling the boats.

9 The team of Schneider Electric had good chances to win from the very beginning. They built their boat with engineers precision; great team work, perseverance and enthusiasm characterised them along the way.

10 Volunteers helped sort the collected garbage and flatten the bottles, so that the garbage takes less room, and transportation is more efficient. The region s waste managing NGO tackled transportation and recycling of the garbage. 70% of the collected garbage turned out to be to be reusable packaging material: aluminium boxes, cans, beer and wine bottles, PET bottles, oilcans. During sorting, heaps of footwear (shoes, slippers), light bulbs, toys, nylon bags and chemicals were also collected.
