2 Page 2 akis nuk First Nation Community News Indian Beach and land designation vote set for Wed., June 29 Akisqnuk Chief and Council have asked the Department of Indian Affairs to proceed with a referendum vote under the Indian Act for the leasing of reserve lands. The Referendum VOTE is set for Wednesday June 29, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Band Office. Voting may be done in person in advance by mail-in ballot. The following two items will be on the ballot: - The designation of Lot 37-4 for commercial leasing purposes acres between the Band office and the corner of Highway 93 and Kootenay #3 Road; - The extension of the Indian Beach Estates Development lease term to the year Currently and without an extension the lease at IBE will expire in A successful extension will apply to both Lot 2 (50.1 acres) and Lot 45 (42.8 acres) at Indian Beach Estates. Lot 37-4 Commercial Lease Designation: If approved, Lot 37-4 be will be designated for commercial leasing purposes for a term of 99 years. Potential development on the lot may include: gas station, retail stores, offices and restaurant, or other businesses. To manage the designation in the event the referendum is successful, Akisqnuk Council has incorporated a numbered company ( B.C. LTD), which may enter into subleases with tenants at fair market rent. Benefits of designation to the Band include: rental income from subleases; development of businesses; property tax income; and rental income all of which can used for community development. Indian Beach Estate Designation (Lots 2 and 45): The purpose of this referendum question is to extend the IBE lease term to the year The existing lease with K & H Holdings Ltd. (Fred Becker) will remain in place until Dec. 31, Upon passage of a successful referendum, a new lease will commence in the year The has entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (2007) with the Indian Beach Estates Management Corporation which includes an annual rent formula and 2.5% transfer fee for each lease transfer to the band on any properties sold at IBE. Revenue from rental income will continue to year Extension of the lease at IBE will fix a problem caused by different termination dates. The current lease at Lot 2 will end in 2048, while the lease at Lot 45 ends in For more information on the referendum, or to arrange a home visit to discuss the matter, call Lands Manager Terry Nicholas, $100,000 Indian Beach signing bonus to be split equally At their May 24 meeting, the Council of the voted to divide a $100,000 signing bonus that will be provided to the Band upon the successful passage of a referendum at Indian Beach Estates equally among all registered Akisqnuk Band Members. If the referendum passes the money belonging to members under 18 years will be held in trust until those youth turn 18.
3 June 5 to 11 is Environment Week in Canada. Celebrate Environment Canada s and Canadian Environment Week s 40th anniversary by helping to sustain it. Here are ideas and activities that you can do that will make a difference. At home: - Save on air conditioning costs in the summer by opening your windows at night, and then keeping them closed during the day with the curtains drawn. - Have a trash-free barbecue and invite guests to bring dinnerware (utensils) or use a Frisbee as a plate. It's good for the environment and good for your health (running after it) afterwards. - While it is tempting, try not to open the door of your oven when using it. Kuku S umu The second annual National Aboriginal Day Festival will be held on Saturday, June 18th, 2011 at Lakeshore Resort Campground on the Akisqnuk First Nation. Everyone is welcome at the festival will begin at 10 a.m. with the Grand Entry and run until 7 p.m. Entry is free and breakfast will be available from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The festival is presented by the Akisqnuknik Development Corporation. The theme of the festival is Building Partnerships, Building Futures. The event will feature several speakers including Strater Crowfoot, CEO and Executive Director of Indian Oil and Gas Canada, Staff Sergeant Marko Shehovac, Nic Milligan, and Doug Take part in Canadian Environment Week It reduces the oven temperature, therefore wasting precious energy. - Instead of washing your car yourself, take it to a car wash. This saves more water than you think. - Turn your yard into a sanctuary for local wildlife by planting wild flowers, supplying water and setting up a bird feeder. - Use cedar chips instead of mothballs. Not only do they smell better, but they are better for the environment too. There are chemicals in mothballs that can harm animals, our environment and us if used incorrectly. - Turn your thermostat down by a couple of degrees. You may find that you do not even notice the difference. - Plant trees to shade your house. This will minimize your air conditioning costs in the summer. - Install ENERGY STAR Qualified Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) wherever possible, for maximum energy and money savings. - Turn off the water while brushing your teeth. This will help save hundreds of litres of water annually. - Organize a clothing swap. Clear out unwanted clothing items from your closet and exchange them with friends and family in a special event or just for fun. This is a great way to renew your wardrobe, while at the same time saving money. Remember, one person s trash is another person s treasure. - Wash your clothes using cold water. Many detergents clean just as Page 3 National Aboriginal Day Festival June 18 at Lakeshore Campground Clovechok. The festival will showcase two talented native groups: the Sookenai Singers from Cranbrook and the Yaqan nu kiy Drum Group from Creston. Traditional dancer Leon Cranebear will return this year to perform. Throughout the day there will be musical acts including the Halfsacks, Jade Bowen, Combo Akimbo, Charles Desvents, Ken Trusler, Pete Penkala, and Rachel Mari Kimber. The event promises to be fun for the entire family so be sure to join us in celebrating National Aboriginal Day. - Akisqnuknik Development Corporation well in cold water. - Feed the land and not the landfill. Collect organic waste for composting. By composting kitchen scraps and yard waste, you can cut your garbage by one third. If your municipality does not have a composting bin program, you can build or purchase your own backyard composter. For more information, visit the Composting Council of Canada s website at - Dispose of your household chemicals safely. If not disposed of properly, household hazardous waste such as paint, solvents, cleaning products, motor oil, automotive batteries, fuel and fluorescent light bulbs can cause harm to human health and the environment. - Continued next page

Most Ktunaxa citizens make all their purchases outside their own communities because there aren t Ktunaxa-owned businesses on their reserve. Money spent outside Ktunaxa communities contributes to the wellbeing of others and not to the Ktunaxa. This feeds the cycle of dependency on other communities and other levels of government. In order to build a Ktunaxa economy it is vital to support communitybased entrepreneurs and businesses. To keep money in the community use Ktunaxa goods and services whenever you can! Not only will you help the environment, but you will earn a few dollars doing it. According to Christopher: wupnik' natanik is a social networking out your old computers, TVs, VCRs, stereos and fax machines, reuse, refurbish or recycle them.
