Birthday celebrations are held the third Wednesday of each month at the Band Hall. akis nuk First Nation events of interest Band office hours: The Akisqnuk First Nation Band office is open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday. The Band office is closed over the noon hour (12 p.m. to 1 p.m.) from Monday through Friday. Easter Weekend: The Band office will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday. 2 Page 2 akis nuk First Nation Community News Formed in 2007, The Ktunaxa Running Club is based out of Cranbrook B.C. The club is aimed at Aboriginal youth and hopes to create an interest in running and healthy lifestyles. First Nations Youths struggles are many, including personal use or peers who struggle daily with the use of drugs, alcohol, and solvents. Over the past three years, three teens have been lost to suicide and drug and alcohol poisoning. The Ktunaxa Running Club participates in the Vancouver 10K Sun Run on an annual basis. This will be the 4 th year the group has attended. As an added component, a tour is arranged for the Youth to visit to the Vancouver East Side (aka Skid Row). A reputable Tour Guide is selected to lead the group. The tour is offered as a drug awareness and preventive program. The objectives are to help the youth avoid the self-defeating cycle of drugs and alcohol. A qualified, professional, personal care attendant is sought by the Akisqnuk Health Department. The successful candidate must be a graduate of a Registered Care Aid program from a qualified Ktunaxa Nation Running Club This year s confirmed tour guide is Mr. Morris Bates. Mr. Bates has provided tours for the Vancouver Police Department and Aboriginal groups since the early 1990s. He offered the Scared Straight Youth at Risk Program -- R.I.P: Reality Check for Indigenous Peoples. The program was prominently featured by CBC, CTV and Global TV. Unfortunately, the program dissolved due to fiscal constraints. Mr. Bates also assisted in the production of the Documentary Thru a Blue Lens. The Ktunaxa Running Club met with Mr. Bates on Saturday, April 16, In supporting healthier lifestyles, two youth have identified themselves as The Ktunaxa Nation Running Club willing participants. These two youth are participating in the walking program, with hopes their successful finish will help propel their training program. The health program includes learning about overall physical health, healthy foods, diet, exercise, diabetes and other health Patsy, * * * A groundskeeper is sought for the Akisqnuk First Nation. On Sunday, April 17, 2011, the group joined 50,000 other participants in the 2011 Vancouver Sun Run. This year the running club partnered with E Division Aboriginal Policing Section. In partnership, the RCMP Air Services were offered to transport the youth to Vancouver. The Youth departed with RCMP Air Services on April 15, 2011 at 15:30 hours.
