2 Welcome On behalf of the East Bay Regional Park District, we d like to welcome you to the 24 th Annual Gathering of Ohlone Peoples. Why peoples, and not people? Because Ohlone is a modern word that groups 58 independent village communities (tribes) under a single name based on the common roots of the languages they spoke. The area encompassed by the East Bay Regional Park District (Alameda and Contra Costa counties) falls within the homelands of some 25 tribes. Each tribe had three to five villages whose residents spoke variants of three languages Ohlone (Costanoan), Bay Miwok, and Delta Yokuts. Through this event we celebrate the beauty and vibrancy of Ohlone cultures past, present, and future. We are truly grateful to the many Ohlone who participate in this event, as well as to those who give so much of their knowledge and time to the District throughout the year. Welcome and enjoy the event! Costanoan Rumsen Carmel Tribe s Humaya Dancers Our dance group desires to maintain the tradition and to keep the culture alive. We seek to create a joyful presence and to renew and protect the earth. We are committed to reminding people of the continuing presence of California Native Americans and to maintain a drug and alcohol-free environment. Before we can expect any form of recognition from others, we must recognize each other. We present our dances this year in honor and respect for Head Man Dancer Stephen Franco Cesena ( ). Stephen was proud to serve as our Head Man Dancer. He passed that pride onto our young dancers. We, in turn, remember him with pride. -Tony Cerda, Tribal Chair, Rumsen Ohlone Ayn Wieskamp, Board Director East Bay Regional Park District Board of Directors Whitney Dotson, Ward 1 Dee Rosario, Ward 2 Dennis Waespi, Ward 3 Ellen Corbett, Ward 4 Ayn Wieskamp, Ward 5 Beverly Lane, Ward 6 Colin Coffey, Ward 7 Robert E. Amah-Ka-Tura My grandmother taught me all that was taught to her from her grandmother. She said, You have learned all that I have learned. Now you must go and teach our people the songs, dances and stories. Keep our culture alive, for it keeps a people together. So dance, dance, dance, sing, sing, sing. This way people will know we are still here. Our tribal association has Salinan, Costanoan, Chumash, Juaneño, and Apache people. -Patrick Orozco, Chumash/Juaneño, Founder Amah-Ka-Tura & Pajaro Valley Ohlone Indian Council

3 Photo courtesy of Mission Dolores Brasilica Parish My father Felipe "Phil" Galvan ( ) was a man respected and admired for his work in preserving the memory, the heritage and the dignity of the Ohlone People through his efforts in the community, his life, and his daily example. In 1964/1965, with members of his family especially his mother, brother, and sister he led the campaign to save The Ohlones Indian Cemetery in Fremont from the bulldozers of destruction. In 1967, the name "Ohlone" was suggested by my father to the founders of the local community college. Later, two researchers visited our home in Mission San Jose to interview him. One was Randy Milliken, author of A Time of Little Choice and Native Americans at Mission San Jose; the other was Malcolm Margolin, who was preparing his manuscript for The Ohlone Way (republished as a 35th Anniversary Edition). Much of what you read in The Ohlone Way is Margolin's reworking of my father's interview. And, in 1982, my father and his brother Michael "Ben" Galvan laid the cornerstone of the reconstructed Mission San Jose Church. In my father's footsteps, I have set my goal to tell the accurate story of my ancestors and to dispel the myth that we are "Men of Extinction" as on occasion, my father and his brother would identify themselves. -Andrew A. Galvan, Chochenyo Ohlone Akkoyt Máyyan Šáatošikma Welcome to the homeland of Chochenyo-speaking Ohlones. This diverse and splendid landscape has been home to countless generations of Ohlones. Through a deep knowledge of the living things around them, local native peoples thrived here for thousands of years. Their skills and practices provided an impressive sustainability of the resources they used. Around 250 years ago, their way of life was irreversibly changed. Spanish contact and eventually American governance kept Ohlones from their land. It is through the extreme strength and perseverance of individuals across generations that the historical and cultural knowledge and practices were and continue to be passed into the present and on to the future. As you enjoy the day, we hope you will experience the stories, skills, and messages today s Ohlones came here to share. Please join us in thanking them for their generosity, strength, and perseverance. We hope that together we will be inspired to respect and care for our diverse and splendid communities, as well as the land that continues to support us all today. With gratitude, The Ohlone Sisters As members of the Costanoan Rumsen Carmel Tribe of over 2,000 Ohlone, we represent resilience in a modern society. Relocated out of Our Ancestral homelands brought us closer as a people. Maintaining oral traditions and teachings kept our communities thriving, influencing the art we create. Creativity is a blessing from the Creator, one which we will utilize to shine light on the community that has given us so much throughout our lives. -Carla Marie Muñoz & Desiree Muñoz, Rumsen Ohlone Photo courtesy of Desiree Muñoz Sonja Gomez Supervising Naturalist Coyote Hills Regional Park To learn more about native peoples of the Bay Area, consider checking out the following resources: Browse books available for sale in our Visitor Center Pick up a resource list, also available in our Visitor Center Go online to ebparks.org and search Ohlone curriculum for an extensive information file with lesson plans Coyote Hills offers regular programs discussing Ohlone skills, histories, and cultures. Commercial use of any such images must also have the approval of the East Bay Regional Park District. I ve learned about my culture by working at archaeological sites as a Monitor, and presently as a Most Likely Descendent in association with the California Native American Heritage Commission, as well as by participating in the programs at Coyote Hills. I ve been involved in the Coyote Hills Ohlone Intern Program since it began in I m proud that my mother, daughter, and grandkids participate with me in the programs at Coyote Hills. We ve all specialized in specific Ohlone skills: soaproot Photo courtesy of Mona Garibay brush making for myself, acorn making, string making, shell jewelry, games, and basketry for my mother, daughters, and grandkids. I look forward to teaching my two-year-old great-granddaughter, as she grows up, and my great-grandchildren to come. I had the best teacher ever, Bev Ortiz. I m so grateful to have had you as a teacher. You re always saying that you learn so much from me. But every time I m with you, I learn something different, and I feel that I owe you, not the other way around. You ve done a lot for the Natives. You re the greatest! Ramona Garibay, Him ren of Ohlone, Bay Miwok, and Plains Miwok I come to schools to teach children about my culture and to show them how I make cordage string out of the dogbane plant. This I know will stay in their memory forever. When I see some of the children at public places, I love how they run up to me with such excitement, telling me how they remember me, what I taught them about my family history, and how the string making was the coolest thing ever! Now I know my ancestors will never be forgotten. Sabrina Garibay, Him ren of Ohlone, Bay Miwok, and Plains Miwok Photo courtesy of Desiree Vigil Photo courtesy of Sabrina Garibay Through my mother, Eleanor Galvan, my San Francisco Bay Area Indian ancestry includes, but is not limited to Ohlone, Bay Miwok, Plains Miwok, and Patwin. I am proud to state that there is nothing more important to me than family. I am a granddaughter, a daughter (and a niece), a sibling, a mother, and a grandmother. Following in my grandfather Felipe "Phil" Galvan's footsteps, I am a Native American Indian Consultant with over 15 years of experience in cultural resources management, specializing in handling Native American Indian concerns regarding archaeology and cultural resource management. I am regularly called upon to assist with the archaeological concerns and Native American Indian policies of agencies such as the National Park Service, Cal -Trans, and both the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. Desiree Vigil, Chochenyo/Ohlone

5 Photo courtesy of Sabrina Garibay Growing up, my mother Trina Marine Ruano taught me many cultural values, especially devotion to extended family, something our ancestors lived since the beginning of time. My extended family includes seven children, 17 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren. My mother s teachings included the rule that we must never bring an owl figurine or picture into the house. At the very first Ohlone gathering in 1994, an owl perched in the tree above my table. I knew it was a messenger from my mother, who passed away in 1986, letting me know that she was happy that I was sharing our family history and cultural values with the world. I want to thank Bev Ortiz, who is my teacher, for all that she has shared with me about the older ways of my people, especially the acorn preparation. I m 83 years old and have always followed my own rule of teaching my kids that you re never too old to learn. I have lived it. When I was 62, I joined the first Ohlone Intern program at Coyote Hills, coordinated by Bev. That s when I learned most of what I know about the older ways. I m proud that some of my children and grandchildren have joined the Intern program, and that the younger generation of my family is learning from us and keeping our culture alive. Ruth Orta, Him ren of Ohlone, Bay Miwok, and Plains Miwok I am Mutsun Ohlone, my heritage traces to five Mutsun villages Ausaima, Ochentac, Unixaima, Guaachirrones de Sierra and Mutsun all in the area of present day San Juan Bautista and Gilroy. To honor and respect my ancestors, I share Ohlone culture with the public through cultural displays and demonstrations. I enjoy working with tule reed, in basketry, cordage, duck decoys, boats and houses. I have consulted with archaeologists and numerous agencies to preserve and protect ancient Ohlone cultural sites and burials. As someone who has been working to protect ancestral cultural sites since 1991, I ve fought for their preservation and stewardship. Public land management agencies, such as the Photo courtesy of Cassy Kehl park district, have become the owners of many of our cultural sites. As such, we need to develop a collaborative, cooperative relationship with them in the protection and management of these sites. One way to recognize the importance of cultural sites is to give them national prominence by nominating them to the National Register of Historic Places. -Jakki Kehl, Mutsun Ohlone Small Outdoor Presentation Schedule Under the Oak, Upper Terrace 11:00am Native Plant Tasting Park Staff 12:00pm Clap-stick Making* Isaac Bojorquez, Rumsien/Ka-koon-ruk *To participate in a two-hour workshop from noon-2pm, please sign up at the Visitor Center. I am Ohlone/Costanoan. I am an active member within the Native community with traditional ceremonial dance, regalia making and the revitalization of the Rumsen language. Although there are no fluent speakers left today, I hope to change that with today s technology and being a part of the larger movement by the Ohlone people as a whole. I strive to tell the stories of my ancestors that WE as people can feel proud of; this is how I keep my Native identity while working to educate others about Ohlone culture in general. My ancestors lived through a sad point in history and I have a great responsibility to HEAR and LEARN from them. I want to make sure all the information my ancestors left behind is passed on to my children's generation and the generation yet to come. As my good friend Lance Canales once said, "Mighty oaks will stand a thousand years after man". I am Ohlone, We are still here today and will be here for years to come! -Isaac Bojorquez, Ka-Koon-Ruk Rumsien Ohlone Ohlone Basketry How Tule Is Used Art Exhibit In the Visitor Center Food Concession Lower Terrace Wahpepah s Kitchen Linda Yamane, Rumsen Ohlone Jakki Kehl, Mutsun Ohlone Carla Marie Munoz, Rumsen OhloneKanyon Sayers-Roods, Costanoan Ohlone & Chumash The first Native American woman-owned catering business in California, proudly serving authentic Native cuisine based on the Kickapoo heritage of the southern United States. Chef Crystal Wahpepah was recently featured on the Food Network s Chopped. I m excited to continue bringing new baskets and other beauties into the world. They can often speak more eloquently than words of the extraordinary richness of our ancestors lives. Most recently, I completed a pair of elaborate old-style ear ornaments, with feathered basketry disks and incised bird bone tubes. I also made a bottomless hopper basket that sits atop a shallow mortar for pounding acorns, often held in place by a ring of tar. I ll be sharing these and other creations inside the visitor center. - Linda Yamane, Rumsen Ohlone, traces her Ohlone heritage to the Rumsen people of Monterey, Point Lobos Photo courtesy of & lower Carmel River valley. She has spent the past thirty Linda Yamane years researching and reviving Ohlone basketry and other traditional technologies, as well as Rumsen language, songs, and old-time stories. Being native isn t what we do. It is what we are: ancient peoples of this earth that are still here and will always be here. The land itself gives us everything that we are: language to describe it, food to sustain us, places to make ceremony about it, and much more. Above all, it gives us our spiritual foundation that connects us to everything in this world and beyond. -Gregg Castro, t rowt raahl Salinan/ rumsien Ohlone Photo courtesy of Beverly R. Ortiz

7 Ohlone Participants Photo courtesy of Linda Yamane The thing that really got me interested in my culture was the time we made clapper sticks at the Coyote Hills village site with my sister Marie, Linda Yamane, and Alex Ramirez. I realized the plant we used was the medicine I grew up with. When Bev Ortiz showed me an article that listed saucco as the old California Spanish name for elderberry, it all came full circle, because that was the word we called elderberry when I was young. It brought me a different outlook about what I learned as a child. I was learning about my people! Through Bev and the inspiration, guidance, and support she gave about which doors to walk through to find the answers to my questions, I met other people, like Norm Kidder and Ken Peek, who, like Linda and Alex, gave me more inspiration. I never would have thought that I would have achieved this much, known this much, and enjoyed it as much as I have. It gives me pride to share it with my kids, my grandkids, and other family members. Thinking back on the last 20 years, all I can say is it s been a good path to travel on. I hope that everyone will think about what it was like here 300 years ago what went on in the villages the hunting, the ceremonies, the spirituality of it. T. Michael Bonillas, Rumsien & Mutsun Ohlone "I am a creative artist ever inspired by nature and the natural world. I make a difference in the lives of others by sharing my life experiences and knowledge about California Native Americans. I have the gift of communication, and challenge myself to utilize this gift to deliver powerfully effective messages for others. My personal mission, that I intend to carry out in my career, is to contribute toward the goal of global education with emphasis on promoting understanding of the relationship between humanity and the natural world. I was raised in Indian Canyon, trust land of my family, which is currently available to anyone in need of ceremony. My art has been featured at the de Young Museum, The SOMArts Gallery, SNAG Magazine, and numerous school projects. In March of 2012 I earned my Bachelor of Science Kanyon Sayers-Roods (left) and her mother Ann Marie Sayers Photo courtesy of Chris Cochems in Web Design and Graphics Media at the Art Institute of California in Sunnyvale.
