Dear Friends, July 1, 2012 Welcome to the 128 th edition of the Canada Day Regatta, celebrating Canada s 145 th birthday on July 1 st. This is the oldest and largest combined rowing and paddling regatta in North America, that combines the paddling sports of canoeing, kayaking and dragon-boating with rowing. On behalf of the Dominion Day Regatta Association I welcome you to the Annual Canada Day Regatta held at the Allan A. Lamport Regatta Course at Centre Island, Toronto. As you look around you today you will see the greatest number of visitors to Toronto Island of any day of the year. Take the opportunity to speak to one of the many spectators and tell them about your sport, be it rowing, canoeing, kayaking or dragonboating. Tell them about the Club that you belong to and the how people learn your sport and encourage them to come out to your learn to row/paddle. Take this opportunity to showcase your sport! The Dominion Day Regatta Association is thankful to the Toronto Port Authority that operates the ferry to the Billy Bishop Toronto City Centre Airport. Toronto Port Authority staff have supported the transportation of our boat trailers back and forth from the Island and significantly lightened the load and shortened the day for our boat drivers. DDRA also thanks Tourism Toronto for arranging for promotional material about Toronto that is available at the grandstand. Visit the DDRA website at for updates regularly. I wish you good racing and Happy Canada Day! Judy Sutcliffe President Dominion Day Regatta Association

Ken Lane Special Achievement Award Canoeing Attila Nagy is the 2012 recipient of the Ken Lane Special Achievement Award on behalf of the paddling contingent of the regatta. The purpose of the Ken Lane Special Achievement Award is to recognize those volunteer members who have made significant and exemplary contributions to the Dominion Day Regatta Association ( DDRA ) either as a builder, an official or a coach in each of canoeing (which includes dragon boating) and rowing. It is very likely that not only has every paddler who ever raced at the Dominion Day Regatta spoken to Attila it is also sure that every rower has spoken to him too if only to say no thanks to him when he offered them a copy of the racing program for a very small donation. Attila is that guy all rowers and paddlers know on sight, distributing programs, first on the ferry crossing over to the Island and if he missed you there he would have found you at the side of the racecourse. Attila started and finished his paddling career in a blaze of glory when he won his first and only canoe race at camp in Algonquin Park with a significant lead, realizing there was no where to go from there he retired from paddling eventually moving his interest to racquetball where he competed with legendary canoeist Jimmy Mossman who introduced him to Don May, who then reintroduced Attila back to paddling this time as finish line judge for local regattas. This lead him to the DDRA as a board member where he became the editor from of the DDRA program, was VP of canoeing in 2006 and in 2007 started distributing the programs (seeking donations) on the ferry and on the athlete s side of the race course, and continued to act as co-starter for the p.m. races. Attila did try in 2010 to use the excuse of double bypass surgery as an excuse to step down from the DDRA and program distribution, he was in his words urged/invited back by the board, he returned in a limited capacity, attending meetings and distributing the programs. We were all thankful to have him back. So this year when you see Attila, say yes, you would love to have a program, hand him that small donation and then remember to congratulate him as this year s recipient of the Ken Lane Special Achievement Award.

Dominion Day Regatta 2012 Required Reading by Adam van Koeverden I ve been considering what exactly Dominion Day Regatta goers would like to read in their Dominion Day Regatta Program. In all likelihood, you ve purchased it to have a (relatively) accurate account of when your races, or the races of your children or grandchildren might be scheduled to come down the Allan Lamport Regatta Course on Toronto Island. So consider my musings here to be a bonus! I apologize if you d prefer a Sudoku puzzle or a crossword or something. I ll try to be less frustrating than a Sudoku puzzle and more thorough than a crossword because I don t think I ve ever finished a crossword but I promise I will finish this article. I suppose my role here is to provide a little Canadian Canoe-Kayak Content in this Olympic year; it was also a leap-year, as all Summer Olympic years are. This Dominion Day Regatta Program is, after all, funded in part by the Government of Canada (like me!), and is thus subject to the same CanCon laws that dictate that 40% of all programming be made, at least in some part, in Canada or by a Canadian. I m in Florida right now (and it s April), but I m totally Canadian, so I assure you, this is legit CanCon right here. Oh, and it s Canada Day where you are, fantastic! Happy Canada Day! That Regatta Course there? Yeah, that one. It s called the Allan Lamport Regatta Course. There s an Allan A. Lamport Stadium up by my place on King Street as well. I ve played soccer there before, and yes it is indeed named after the same guy. The middle A stands for Austin. Ol Lampy was the Mayor of our great city in the 1950s. And we ve got plenty more than just this racecourse to thank him for! His most notable achievement, at least as it applies to the Dominion Day Regatta today, was to oppose the City of Toronto s Blue Laws, which prohibited the playing of sports in the city on Sundays. The puritan forebears of our great city locked up playing fields and even swing-sets on Sundays! He cut them padlocks right off of them playgrounds. Today is Sunday! Actually today, the day I m writing this article, in April, is really a Sunday. As is the Dominion Day Regatta this year, YOUR Sunday. I feel like I m writing for a time capsule. What is the future like, dear reader? One of Lampy s most famous quotations was: "It's hard to make predictions - especially about the future". (I m not making this up.) Well I ll be! If it weren t for Ol Lampy we wouldn t be here today racin kayaks and canoes and those funky backwards-boats would we? We d all be in our Sunday best, pewin up for communion and psalms! I m certain I haven t offended anyone because if you are reading this, then you re in breach of the Christian Sabbath anyhow. Sorry if I did, though. His Excellency Mayor Allan A. Lamport also petitioned the Province of Ontario to allow for the opening of cocktail bars in the city of Toronto. Until 1947 there weren t any! You d have to go to a speakeasy for a drink, or, ironically, to Church if it happened to be Sunday. Sports and booze! Mayor Allan sounds ok. Lampy also believed in public housing, but hippies really got on his nerves. He smoked cigars and presented the awards at the Miss Toronto Pageant at the Exhibition Place every year he was mayor. He also flew planes in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was instrumental in getting the city to build both the Island Airport and Pearson International. He oversaw the building of our subway system here, too. Too bad he left it up to the fella in charge now to finish it, eh? I think smart people should run cities,

and I think public services are worth a few bucks in taxes and I like to ride my bike safely in Toronto, so suffice to say I m not a huge fan of the guy in charge now. But I feel like I would have liked Allan. You were all right, Lampy. It s nice to have a little history lesson at the Regatta isn t it? I d be remiss if I didn t thank Wikipedia for all that juicy Toronto lore. So today is the last week of my 10-week Florida training camp. In 11 weeks it ll be Canada Day, Canada s 145 th Birthday, that s your today. If all goes to plan over the course of the next 11 weeks then I ll be training in Hungary right now, preparing for my third Olympic Games. Sadly, over the course of my racing career I ve spent quite a few Canada Days abroad. I ll be celebrating today with a mini Maple Leaf flag, a North of 60 DVD box set, some very loud Men Without Hats (Safety Dance, for the CanCon) and bowl of goulash all on my own here in Szolonok. Even now, more than 100 days removed from the Olympics, I m getting pretty excited. For you, dear reader, we re only 5 weeks away! Oh man, that makes me a little nervous. One of the most common questions I ve received from young paddlers over the years is: Don t you get nervous? My answer is invariably the same every time: Of course. Since I do, every single time I line up to race. I think we get nervous about things we really care about. That s how I deal with the nerves, I think: Well, if I wasn t nervous I guess I wouldn t care, and if I didn t care then I wouldn t do very well, so in order to do well in my race I d better be nervous! So if you re nervous right now for your race coming up, maybe that helps. Or if your kids are nervous you could share that with them. No, wait. That s not cool. Kids don t want their parents telling them not to be nervous. Just tell them I m cool, Adam van Koeverden is cool, eh guys? Actually... will the kids think I m cool, if their parents tell them I am? Maybe not... Maybe we should have just gone with a Sudoku puzzle, huh? Another common question I get is about goal setting. I ve been asked by the media what my goal is for London, ad naseum. They ve often framed the question like Adam, you ve carried our flag at the Closing and Opening Ceremony, and you ve won an Olympic medal of all three colours, what are your goals leading into London? Alright, I admit it. Nobody asked me that question, I just wanted to brag about my Olympic stuff. But, if anybody does ask, I ll tell them that my goal is always the same. I just want to race my very best. I want to cross the finish line knowing that I couldn t have gone any faster. I want to be sure my tank is totally empty, that I executed a perfect race with great, efficient technique and made all these thousands of kilometers in training worthwhile. That s why we train so hard, to make our bests even better. Good luck to you, and your club mates or your kids or grandkids or whoever you re at the Allan Lamport Regatta to cheer on today. We ve got a great sport, don t we? It s thanks to those who ve committed so much of their livelihoods to Canoeing in Canada. So, thank a volunteer or a coach today. Or, in the case that you re a volunteer or a coach then, hey... Thanks Eh? Happy Canada Day! Adam van Koeverden

Canoeing at the Olympics: What part did Canada play? By Ken Butler Olympic canoe racing was strongly mandated by Aubrey Ireland, Sr. He was a top C-1 paddler from the Island Amateur Aquatic Association in the sport of canoeing. He was also an officer of the Canadian Canoe Association from 1922 when he was Rear Commodore eventually moving up to become Commodore in 1924 as was the usual protocol. He was the main force behind the move to send a demonstration canoe racing team to the 1924 Paris Olympics. The 1924 demonstration regatta consisted of seven races Canadian singles, tandem and fours known today as C-1, C-2 and C-4. It would be 12 years later before canoeing became an official event. At the Olympic Games in 1936 at Berlin, Frank Amyot placed 1 st in the 1000m C- 1, in the 1000m C-2, Warren Saker and Harvey Charters placed 2 nd and would repeat in the 10,000m event. In a previous article I wrote how the Island Canoe Club came into existence on the ashes of the Island Amateur Aquatic Association in early The young paddlers of the new club competed in their national championships on the Henley course in St. Catharines, Ontario. Aubrey Ireland, Jr., won the Senior C-1 and Senior C-2 with Terry Evans over a half mile course. The Senior K-2 race was also won by the Island Club of Karl Gruber and Art Johnson also over the half mile course. At the 1940 and 1941 national champion-ship regattas the Island Club excelled in the C-2 races in all events. The key paddlers were Bert Oldershaw and Bill Stevenson, and Tom Hodgson and Joe Plunkett. These four paddlers would compete in the C-4s and war canoe. Bert Oldershaw and Tom Hodgson also competed in the C-1 events. After the war the CCA nationals would resume in 1946 with the Club taking up where they had left off in These four paddlers were largely responsible for leading the Club in back-to-back national championships. For the 1948 Olympic Games in London, the Island Club qualified Bert Oldershaw and Bill Stevenson to race in the 10,000m event and they placed 5 th after a very hard race. During this time the Island Canoe Club was a very strong and well-balanced club in all classes due to its learning years from many of the paddlers who learned the sport while members of the defunct Island Amateur Aquatic Association. The Club would win the national championship regatta in 1947 and again in In 1947 the national executive committee required that all paddlers be seated in their shells when they raced. Prior to this decision, all double blade races were raced by single blade paddlers kneeling up and paddling first on one side and then on the other. They used an 8 6 or 9 double blade. Many single blade paddlers were reluctant to change over to being seated which resulted in many new members taking up double blade. The Canadian paddlers learned much from the 1948 Olympics. When they went to compete internationally they thought that they were nearly invincible and would have very little

difficulty competing. They soon learned that they had much to learn from the European paddlers. There was the need for more, and better, conditioning and training. They also had to change their single blade stroke. In double blade the kayak was being introduced in Europe and all double blade racers had to be seated. This led to the introduction of the K-1. The next move was to go metric races and to eliminate the turns in all turn races. Canoeing was one of the first sports to convert to metric distances. Previously all races were either ½ mile or in the case of the open war canoe the distance was one mile. The introduction of the kayak (Senior K-1) led to other kayak singles, then K-2 and K-4 races. These changes came about in stages as the Association was looking more and more to competing in international events. The position was to become strong competitors and winners in international races. It would require changing our ribbed type of racing canoes (shells) for the European style of molded shell which were becoming the standard canoe in international competitions. The kayaks were the first of the molded being used in all kayak races, K-1, K-2 and K-4. Training methods changed requiring more frequent and longer sessions. These changes took years but would finally produce winning international crews on all levels of our sport. The first breakthrough came about in the 1973 Junior Championships on Lake Radun, Poland. Sue Holloway took 3 rd in the K-1 race and, with teammate Karen Tippett, in the K-2 placed 5 th. It was 25 years before Canada achieved any placing in international competitions. For the Island Canoe Club though the Olympics was their main focus. After the kayaks were adopted as racing craft for the association, Bert Oldershaw of the Island Club purchased a K-1 from Max Andersen in Sweden and became successful and qualified for the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. The Island Club had many strong C-1 and C-2 crews as a result; Art Johnson and Tom Hodgson qualified for the 1000m C-2 in which they placed 8 th while Bert earned a 9 th in the 1000m K-1. By 1970 the Canadians sent a small contingent to the Senior Worlds at Copenhagen, Denmark. Scott Lee and John Wood were 7 th in the C m while Dean Oldershaw placed 7 th in the 10,000m K-1. Dean would repeat the next year in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. The 1956 Olympics would be held at Melbourne, Australia. The Island Canoe Club again sent two crews: Bert Oldershaw and Bill Collins who were 7 th in the 1000m C-2 while Tom Hodgson and Bill Stevenson placed 9 th in the 10,000m C-2 race. It should be noted Bert Oldershaw placed in the finals in three Olympics, Tom Hodgson was in the finals in two Olympics, and Bill Stevenson competed in two Olympics; a remarkable record for the original Island Canoe Club. 20 10 th anniversary of Dragon Boats at this historic event! By Tim MacFarlane The year 2012 marks the 11 th anniversary season for the OPS Dragon Boat Club, and 10 th year hosting the dragon boat portion of the DDRA Canada Day Regatta. While OPS stands for the Ontario Public Service (Government of Ontario employees), the club has always been open to anyone who wants to paddle (public or private sector). The Club has steadily grown from two teams in 2002 to the present four general OPS teams (open to anyone) and three independent OPS teams for specific organizations within the OPS (managed separately, but also generally open to anyone when there are team vacancies). The OPS Dragon Boat Club specializes in introducing new paddlers to the sport. We firmly believe that ANYONE can paddle and race in a dragon boat, and we have created many different programs to meet the interest and commitment level of our paddlers. 23 If you are a rower in southern Ontario you may know Joe because you ve worked with him on a rowing committee. More likely, if you are a rower who has raced at a regatta in southern Ontario you know Joe because he was that umpire who has yelled at you to get your boat into the starting position. Joe Lyttle is the recipient of the 2012 Ken Lane Special Achievement Award for rowing. Most of us know Joe as an umpire or as a member of several rowing associations including DDRA, Central Ontario Rowing Association, ROWONTARIO, and Rowing Canada. Joe started his rowing career in 1958 at the Argonaut Rowing Club in Toronto where he raced till 1966 and also coached to From the 1970 s Joe took on the roles of club representative at various rowing associations, then President and Regatta Chair and Umpire of regattas for Ontario and Canada, too numerous to list here. He remains a member to this day of the Argo Club, where on November 2003 he was honoured as a lifetime member and the boathouse was dedicated to him. This past winter found Joe in the hospital for an extended stay of several months, but we are happy to say that he is now at home. Despite that, we on the DDRA were able to depend on him to draw up the race schedule. Probably more importantly to the winners of this year s races is that they will all get a silver beer mug for their efforts, an initiative that came from Joe. Joe even managed to pick them up and arrange engraving once he was out of the hospital. Joe is that voice of reason on every rowing committee who when things may get a little heated always brings us back to earth with the reminder of why we are all there. His motto every kid gets a race is the maybe the most important reason why Joe deserves this award, This year please make sure to come over to the Grandstand to congratulate Joe, and thank him too, cause maybe you got to race cause he said so.

History of The Balmy Beach Club. The Club land was deeded to the residents of the Beach by Sir Adam Wilson and The Balmy Beach Park was incorporated in 1903 by an Act of the Ontario Government. Construction of the Club House was soon underway and it was opened in 1905 for its members to pursue such sports as lawn bowling, tennis, rowing, paddling, sailing, hockey, baseball, and football and anything else they wanted to do. Fire destroyed the Club House in 1936 but through the efforts of several of its members; it was rebuilt, only to have another fire destroy that Club House in Again, a number of members wasted little time in rebuilding the Club House and the present Club House was reopened in Initially, The Balmy Beach Club was made up of two main sections - The Balmy Beach Canoe Club and The Balmy Beach Lawn Bowling Club. Members from these two sections were appointed to for the Board of Directors of the Balmy Beach Club The Balmy Beach Lawn Bowling Club involved just that, but The Balmy Beach Canoe Club had under its jurisdiction the operation of other activities such as Canoeing, Hockey, Tennis, Football (won the Grey Cup in 1927 & 1930) and in later years Rugby, Squash, Beach Volleyball, Basketball, Deck Tennis, Surf Boarding, and anything that the members wanted to take part in. Needless to say, membership kept growing and in 1972 the Constitution of The Balmy Beach Club was rewritten and its Board of Directors became an elected body by all members of The Balmy Beach Club. Incorporated into the Constitution was the formation of five sections The Balmy Beach Canoe Club The Balmy Beach Lawn Bowling Club The Balmy Beach Rugby Club The Balmy Beach Hockey Club The Balmy Beach Squash Club

History of the Balmy Beach Canoe Club Mission Statement The Balmy Beach Canoe Club is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the sport of sprint canoe and kayak racing in the Beach community for over 100 years. The Club s goal is to provide a safe and enjoyable, recreational and/or competitive environment, for members of all ages and abilities. Programs are designed to develop both the physical and mental strength of individual members while encouraging team and Club spirit. Club Administration The management of the affairs of The Balmy Beach Canoe Club is vested entirely in its Executive Board. The Executive Board consists of the offices of Commodore, 1 st Vice- Commodore, 2 nd Vice-Commodore, Rear Commodore, Treasurer, Secretary, Past Commodores, a Paddlers Representative, the Head Coach and Executive appointed Directors Canoe racing has been part of The Balmy Beach Canoe Club since 1905 and it was then that it held its first regatta. In 1907, the Club joined the Canadian Canoe Association ( CCA ) as the Beach Canoe Club and later as the Balmy Beach Canoe Club. Presently it is one of fiftenn member clubs of the Western Ontario Division ( WOD ) of the CCA now known as Canoe Kayak Canada. (CKC) Competitive racing is offered in eight age categories, ranging from Atom (under age 10) to Masters (over age 25). Our Club has a rich tradition of successful competition over the years at the international and national levels. In 1924, canoeing was accepted as an exhibition event at the 1924 Olympic games in Paris, France, and it was Beach s Roy Nurse that led the way with two gold and four bronze medals. In 1936, at the Olympic games in Berlin, Germany, Harvey Charter and Warren Saker in C-2 won silver and bronze medals. Teammate, Bill Williamson, was also selected to race in double blade singles (kayaks were not used at the time). This video recently surfaced showing Canada's first every gold medal in 1000m canoe at these games.

Norm Lane, paddling in C-1, won a bronze medal at the 1948 Games in London, England, and brother, Ken Lane, with Don Hawgood in C-2 won silver medals at the 1952 Games in Helsinki, Finland. Jim Mossman, Head Coach of the Club for over 25 years, was selected to coach Canada s National Canoe Team at the 1960, 1964, 1968 and 1972 Olympics. At the national level, Balmy Beach has won the overall National Championships (the coveted Burgee ) in 1915, 1919, 1927, 1951 and In more recent years Balmy Beach has won the Canadian Masters National Championships in 1987, 1988 and 2006 For years the Canoe club operated from the Main club and ran their annual regattas on Lake Ontario in front of the Club drawing huge crowds of spectators. However, with changes to boat design, the City putting rocks all along the race course to prevent beach erosion, the Canoe Club moved over to a small body of water (Ashbridges Bay) to do their on water practises etc. Beach Regattas are now being run in Welland on an excellent racecourse.

History of the Hanlan Boat Club 40- Aniversity by Richard MacFarlane The Hanlan Boat Club has a rich and colourful history on Lake Ontario. The club was named after the world famous sculler, Edward Ned Hanlan, who was born on July 12, Hanlan, known as The Boy In Blue, was only 5' 8'', never more than 155 pounds. His name became a household word in Paris, London, Rome, Boston, New York, and throughout the British Empire. During the glory years of rowing on Lake Ontario, the sport was synonymous with Edward Hanlan's success, a world champion sculler from 1880 to 1884, winning 300 matched single races and only losing about 6. The Buffalo Courier proclaimed, Hanlan has been worth more to Canada than their new railroad. The London Times noted that he was the king of professional oarsmen. Hanlan's success persuaded local businessmen to form The Hanlan Club in They arranged matches, drew up contracts, and negotiated prize money. The CAAO, now known as Rowing Canada Aviron, held its first regatta on Toronto Bay on August 4 and 5, 1880, in large measure due to Hanlan's influence in the sport. The connection between Toronto rowing clubs and the CAAO's beginnings was obvious. Henry O'Brien, first president of the Argonaut Rowing Club, established in 1872, became the CAAO's president in In fact, during its first regatta on Toronto Bay, the CAAO used Hanlan's star power to encourage more spectators. The Globe newspaper on August 4 th noted: The intervals between the races will be made interesting by the performance of Edward Hanlan, who will row in his shell over the course. In July 1884, a Toronto tradition began with the establishment of the annual Dominion Day Regatta. The regatta moved from the city's waterfront to the Toronto Islands. During the 1930s, races were held at the old Hanlan's Point Lagoon, and the regatta course was named Hanlan Memorial Course. When the Island Airport was born, the site moved to Long Pond. The Year 2009 was the 125 th anniversary of the oldest and largest combined canoeing and rowing regatta in North America. On September 3 rd, 1926, the Ned Hanlan monument, created by renowned sculptor, Emanuel Hahn, is unveiled at the Canadian National Exhibition grounds. On June 12 th, 2004, the City of Toronto re-dedicated the Hanlan statue that was moved from the CNE grounds to Hanlan's Point. In the 1900s, the Hanlan family donated the Hanlan Memorial Challenge Trophy, a large and beautiful silver award, to the Henley regatta. As part of the engraving, there is a scene of the Toronto Islands and an inscription, which reads, Hanlan's childhood home Toronto Island. Every August, it has been the Royal Canadian Henley tradition to award this trophy to the winner of the men's senior eight race. In 1982, at the 100 th anniversary of the Henley, the Hanlan Boat Club eight won this race and the elated crew was photographed with the historic trophy and the honored guest, Miss Margaret Hanlan, daughter of Ned Hanlan. The Hanlan history led to the modern era when Sam Craig, then Vice-President of the Canadian Amateur Rowing Association (CARA), and formerly an executive of the Cadillac Fairview Corporation, established the Hanlan Boat Club in The origins of Hanlan Boat Club began that year when a group of Upper Canada College (UCC) alumni and parents, among them, Tim Turner, Nat Findlay, and Doug Clark, wanted to revive rowing at the school. The first Quonset hut was built on the waterfront, near Regatta Road, at the foot of Cherry Street, from Unwin Avenue along the Toronto Harbour.

Hanlan's first captain was Bob (Henry Robert) Pearce, world-renowned sculler, who was born in Australia but moved to Canada and represented Leander Boat Club in Hamilton. Pearce was the Olympic single gold medallist in Amsterdam, Rowing for Australia, he won his second gold medal in singles competition at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games, and he was Canadian Champion in He was awarded Sydney Rowing Club's first honorary life membership. Hanlan Boat Club received a tremendous boost when Sam Craig arranged to have a paid professional coach in Boris Klavora was hired. He was a 1960s Yugoslav oarsman and he was one of Canada's leading national coaches and a respected authority on researching and applying training techniques. Klavora attracted world level athletes to Hanlan Boat Club. He coached Upper Canada College crews in the spring, Hanlan club crews during the summer, and University of Toronto crews in the fall. He managed all winter indoor training programs. That year, Argonauts lost the University of Toronto varsity men when Tim Turner persuaded the crew to row at Hanlan. Tim Turner joined his brother, Pat, in the men's lightweight four, with Jim Relle and Robert Gibson. They won a bronze medal at the 1981 World Rowing Championships in Munich, Germany. They inspired others to work hard and achieve success. From 1977 to 1980, Hanlan youth men and women enjoyed victories at the Royal Canadian Henley and Canadian Championships, in junior and senior lightweight singles, pairs, doubles, and fouroar events. Upper Canada College sent men's eights overseas to compete at the Henley Royal Regatta in England. University of Toronto crews who had migrated from Argonaut Rowing Club to Hanlan captured the overall Ontario University Athletic Association (OUAA) Championships in 1977 and Two outstanding achievements by Hanlan athletes was the gold medal row and historic photo finish against the United States, by Mike and Mark Evans, Upper Canada College alumni, part of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games men's eight, coached by Neil Campbell. The Evans are the twin sons of Dr. John R. Evans, President Emeritus, University of Toronto ( ), and former Chairman of Torstar ( ), also an enthusiastic Master's oarsman at Hanlan during the late 1980s. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the number of Hanlan Boat Club members increased with the growing popularity of masters rowing for athletes over 27 years old. The prominence of masters rowing was developed through the leadership of Sam Craig, President of CARA in 1985 and Chairman of the Toronto organizing committee for FISA Veterans and the World Masters Games. Volunteers from Don Rowing Club, Argonaut Rowing Club and, of course, Hanlan Boat Club, helped ensure success when Toronto hosted two major international regattas, consecutively, over seven days, on Long Pond course. Over 800 athletes from around the world competed during August 1985 at the 12 th FISA Veterans International Regatta and the inaugural World Masters Games. Between 1988 and 1989, Havergal College arrived at the club and a second boathouse and dock were constructed to accommodate the growth. From 1987, a formal executive committee was established and the running of Hanlan was led by Michael List and then in the early 1990s, by Debbie Beatty. Hanlan had over 200 members, including two high schools, masters rowing enthusiasts, and a learn-to-row program. Kay Worthington, also a leading University of Toronto member from , contributed to the Hanlan Boat Club's success, winning two gelds at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, in the women's coxless four and eight. During the 1990s, Kay Worthington provided coaching to Hanlan members.

In the mid-1990s, electricity was brought in, and the road leading to the club was paved. A full summer program was in place with well over 100 competitive athletes. By 1996, led by the dedicated work ethic and achievements of Masters single sculler and gold medallist, Dr. Ralph Manktelow, our members won junior, open, and masters events, in provincial, national, and international competitions. With the support of Hanlan members, a new Henley trophy, to honour Ralph Manktelow's contribution to rowing, was first presented to the winner of the Men's 'G' Single in More recently, the University of Toronto, after rowing at Argonaut Rowing Club for several years during the 1990s, returned to Hanlan Boat Club, adding to our membership. The millennium marked further dedicated coaching and leadership among club members. The club achieved success through the combined efforts of Sue and Vic Gustavison, Nick Matthews, Peter MacGowan, John Sherrick, Harry Vanderlugt, Steven Staples, Stephen Langmead, Deb Cumming, Diane Mara, Barb Prevedello, Susan Wright, Sara Erskine, and there are others. Coaches such as Mike Nurse, Jay Bertagnolli, Tom Beshoff, Rob Watering, and Scott Taylor have contributed. In 2004, Rowing Canada presented Bertagnolli with a 15 year long service award. Eric Szonyi has led the learnto-row program. In the past two years, Peter MacGowan, as President, has fostered renewed positive relationships between the high school and club programs. Peter has also achieved great success in master s singles. In October 2009, Peter MacGowan, in the 50 plus age category, was fifth fastest of all single scullers, all ages, at the Head of the Charles, a remarkable achievement. There were more fun times. In 2005, several Hanlan masters men and women competed in Edmonton at the World Masters Games. Then in October 2009, nine Hanlan masters athletes travelled to Sydney, Australia and participated in the World Masters Games. Masters women at Hanlan have been particularly successful. For instance, Kelly Brigley has been victorious in the women's masters single, winning at Dominion Day. Deb Cumming and Susan Wright have won at Henley, and also Diane Mara and Barb Prevedello, among master s crews. Hanlan members also have been successful at endurance rowing, for example, the Canadian Sculling Marathon in Ottawa, 42 kilometres of racing in late August. Hugh Fletcher at Hanlan has organized the Ontario Adventure Rowing Toronto Islands Tour in July. From the Year 2012, with the proposed construction of a new boathouse, and even greater participation by members representing all age levels and abilities, the future looks bright for Hanlan Boat Club.
