1 Dear HMS Community, I hope that everyone has returned to a sense of normalcy after this week s treacherous storm. Obviously it was a very short week with the cancellation of school on Monday and Tuesday. These days do have to be made up at the end of the school year. Unfortunately, we had to postpone the presentation featuring chainsaw artist Mike Higgins due to the wet conditions. This school-wide assembly is now scheduled for Monday, November 5th in the afternoon. Students should dress appropriately as they will be outdoors after lunch for the majority of the afternoon. The forecast calls for a cool and dry day at this time. HMS students have been enjoying the activities this week that are part of out PTO Magazine Fundraiser. Last week, students received a duck key chain with a lanyard and won cash prizes if they returned their address booklet on time. This week, students were told that if they wear they duck in school, they may be hunted by the duck hunter and win additional prizes. The duck hunter is a different staff member everyday. This duck hunting will continue through next week and takes place at lunch or during passing from class to class. The different activities have been a really fun and positive way to involve our students with the fundraiser and has fostered tremendous participation. These activities are only one part of the fundraiser. Remember that magazine orders are due on November 7th. This is the only turn-in day for orders. For two orders or more, students will win prize incentives. For six magazine orders, students will win a Plinko Chip for a chance to win cash including having their name entered in to a $100 cash drawing. Remember that 40% of all money raised goes directly to Hurley Middle School, and all checks are made payable to HMS-PTO. Any student that did not receive the packet should see Mrs. Souto or Mrs. Ferrara in the Main Office. Students in all History and Social Science classes have been given the option to write a Veteran s Day Essay. This is not a graded activity, but is organized by the town s Armed Service Memorial Committee and supported by our History Department. The Armed Service Committee will select one middle school student s essay ( words, double-spaced) and present that student with an award on the November 17th Veteran s Day Observance at the Town Hall. The winner will also receive a $50 gift certificate. Please note that the Lifetouch Picture Re-take Session will take place on Tuesday, December 4th. This date has been rescheduled because of the fact that school was cancelled this past Monday. I had the opportunity to participate in Ms. Bouchard s physical education class yesterday, which was a lot of fun! The picture above is of me along with Ms. Bouchard, and students Andrew Lancellotti and Mitch Blanchard. In addition to many others in the class, we competed in the Pacer, which is part of the Physical Fitness Unit. I d like to thank Ms. Bouchard and all of the students that were either participants or spectators for this exciting, yet exhausting afternoon! Andrew, Mitch, and I were the three finalists for this particular class, with Andrew winning and remaining the school s record holder. I also enjoyed my experience visiting Mrs. Dumas ELA class yesterday. When I entered the darkened room I was surprised to see the entire class on the floor on top of blankets reading ghost stories and local legends aloud by a campfire with flashlights. This was very creepy, yet entertaining. It was a wonderful culminating activity for Mrs. Dumas unit on Mystery. Students also shared their own personal ghost stories, and I had the opportunity to share one of my own! There is a picture included later in this newsletter. I would like to remind everyone that the next meeting of the School Committee is Monday, November 5th. Also, there is no school on Election Day, November 6th. This is a district in-service day. Furthermore, I would like to remind you that the Town Meeting is Tuesday, November 13th at 7 pm. Sincerely, Dr. Whalen

2 Season Summary from Boys Soccer Coach Dennis Durand.. This soccer season started with a bang! The young Warriors team felt confident out of the gates with an early win and a tie. Then the Warriors started to skid, losing several games in a row. Many of these games could have gone either way, but the Warriors never got the ball to bounce their way. However, it is very important to note that the Warriors never got down on themselves! This week, Hurricane Sandy came along and blew all of their bad luck away. With extra rest and some Halloween candy, the Warriors boys soccer team wrapped up their season with a great 4-1 win against at home. The Warriors played an excellent game with goal contributions from four different players. For some, this was their last middle school soccer game, so it was nice to send them out on a winning note! I would like to acknowledge all of the players on the team this year. All of them are great students, friends and teammates. Whether it was on the field or in study hall, all of the players worked hard this season. I personally feel very lucky to have had such a great group of individuals to coach. I am very proud of the way that they handled themselves on and off the field. 3 Health Education Newsletter 6th Grade: We have successfully made it past the Puberty topic! Students will now be learning about Inhalants, toxic/volatile substances that are inhaled with the purpose of causing euphoria, or getting high. Students will be learning the short- term and long- term dangers of doing this, especially the fact that even trying this one time can be deadly! 7th Grade: Students are now finishing up with Stress Management and will be beginning Anger Management. The unit test on these two topics will be coming up within the next two weeks. 8th Grade: Students have begun working on their ChooseMyPlate.gov Diet Analysis Project. Students should finish 90% of this project in class if they are using their class time wisely. I am available after school if students need extra time. Due to the cancellation of school on 10/29 & 10/30 the due dates for this project have been changed. Students in 8/WHITE & 8/BLUE, due date is now on November 9th. Students in 8/PINK, due date for their project is now on November 13th. Remember that projects need to be turned- in in a two- pocket folder. Refer to the project description and grading rubric for additional information. All updates have been put on Edline. 11 A Message from Assistant Principal Mrs. Westcoat Another week is over and we are already into November! Where does the time go? While it was only a three- day week, the students came back to school on Wednesday ready to give 110% effort! Our theme this week was staying positive! Your kids make our jobs so easy! Thank you for sharing them with us. I would like to remind you that students should be dropped off no earlier than 7:45am. The mornings are getting colder and students should not be standing outside in inclement weather. Also, when picking up students after an extra help session or a club, please remember that pick up is at 3:25. From the Library EasyBib EasyBib is an online tool that students can use to generate citations. We participated in a free trial last year with great results. Works Cited pages were much more accurate than those created without EasyBib, and students also preferred this method of citation generation. Based on this success, we started a subscription for all HMS students this year. Students will be trained in EasyBib as research projects arise. So far, all 8 th grade and yellow team students have been trained in the bibliography portion of EasyBib and have set up their accounts. The high school has also purchased a subscription, so our students will be using this tool going forward. Unless otherwise directed, all citations should be in MLA 7 format. Also, although this tool will help with the citation process, students have been instructed that they are ultimately responsible for the accuracy of their citations. Therefore, they need to ensure that the fields of the EasyBib form contain the correct information and that capitalization is accurate before they generate the citation.
