1 Page 1 Plimmerton School Newsletter - Week 8, Term 4, 2017 From the Principal Tēnā Koutou PARUMOANA INTERSCHOOL SPEECH COMPETITION Congratulations to Harrison Smith (Year 5&6 competition) and Olivia Fellowes (Year 7&8 competition), who both achieved 2nd place in their competitions last Friday. A fantastic result that reflected the research, hard work and practice that they had put into their speeches. They both spoke passionately and powerfully on important social issues (gender stereotyping and youth suicide). They were great examples of how to speak up and speak out on important issues!! REGIONAL FINALS: EPro8 INTERSCHOOL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COMPETITION Congratulations to the Techno Blades team (Xavier Evans, Will Scott, Mackenzie Bell and Ella Powell) who competed in the final of the EPro8 and came 2nd! They had to solve a variety of very challenging technological problems over 2 ½ hours. Over the three stages of the competition they have competed against 81 other Year 5 & 6 teams, so a great result! BRING YOUR OWN CHROMEBOOK (BYOC) YEAR 5 to 8 - We have extended the time for getting in pre-xmas orders. If you order from the Norrcom website by Monday night the chromebook will be available before school break up. Orders placed after this will be available to collect in the first week of school next year. The link and code can be found on our website. CHRISTMAS GIVING - It is the season for giving, a time of year when we can encourage our children to think of others. We are collecting food bank donations and toys suitable for a child at Christmas on behalf of the Salvation Army. Encouraging your child to make a contribution would be a good way to emphasise the Christmas spirit of giving to those in need. We are collecting donations in the school office and will have a donation station at the Christmas Concert. Some children and parents have asked if they could bring in a small gift for each of their classmates. Please remember we cannot distribute food items to other students. We would prefer that the children showed their christmas spirit by giving food donations or a child s Christmas present to the collection for the Salvation Army. WATER AWARENESS PROGRAMMES A great feature of Plimmerton School is the emphasis on water safety and aquatic skills. The Kōwhai students have been learning water confidence and survival skills in the school pool with instructors from EasySwim. This week Hongoeka Syndicate students had a go at Waka Ama in Paremata Inlet, and Taupō students are having a go sailing at Karehana Bay with the Plimmerton Boating Club. Next week Mana Syndicate will have a Beach Safety programme at Plimmerton Beach. A great way to lead into the summer holidays. Today s Roll 524 Students Ngā Mihi Mike Forrest, Tumuaki - Principal

3 Page 3 STUDENT NEWS EPRO On Tuesday 28 November the Hongoeka Techno Blades - Mackenzie Bell, Ella Powell, Xavier Evans and Will Scott journeyed to Tawa Intermediate for the semi finals of the EPro event (Northern Wellington cluster). In true Plimmerton School style the Techno Blades used their RESPECT values - resilience, energy, sustainability, pride, excellence, collaboration and trust throughout the challenges as they worked their way through the very difficult challenges. They had to complete as many tasks as they could in 2.5 hours. When the final minute came...there were a number of teams tied for first - a tie breaker challenge was on! Tick tick tick tick... Hooray! Victory was theirs - The Techno Blades had won the semi-finals! The excited team came back to school with news of an invitation to the Wellington Regional EPro8 Grand Final! They couldn't believe it! On Wednesday 6 December the Techno Blade team confidently ventured off to Raroa Intermediate for the big Grand Final. Twelve teams from the Greater Wellington region were competing in a gruelling challenge of innovative engineering problem solving. Two and a half hours ticked down (this went faster than you would think) then the timer went off and the final points were allocated out to the 12 teams. It was a nail biting finish between 12 teams who all deserved to be recognised. As we all waited to find out the final results, the students congratulated each other and talked about their successes and challenges throughout the competitions. They were both humble and unified in their passion for innovation. Our amazing Techno Blade team was announced 2nd overall. This was an absolutely outstanding result to come 2nd out of the 144 teams in the Wellington region who entered the competition. We are very proud of you all.

4 Page 4 STUDENT WORK PTA NEWS We have raised an amazing amount for the school and our children, the final figure will be announced at the School Christmas Concert. Thank you for all the support and help everyone has given the PTA over the year. NEXT YEAR... Triathlon Fundraiser - planned for Sunday 4th March Would anyone be interested in helping to organise this event, if so please pta@plimmerton.school.nz Craft Beer Fair - Saturday 7th April - put the date in your diary.

5 Page 5 HEALTHY KIDS CORNER FAMILY NIGHT IN Family nights are times your children will always remember fondly. Quality time with our families is paramount to building stronger relationships. Family time builds confidence, teaches children about interacting with others, and creates wonderful memories that last a life time. Here are some ideas to help you create a memorable evening for your family! Play a board game (or card game) Camp out in the living room Camp in the backyard Listen to an audio book Have a Family Draw Read a book together Take turns reading or one person reads to all Cooking night Build a fort in the lounge Water fight Movie night Puppet shows Talent show night Improv night drama games Great Lego build Playdough creations Show and tell Themed dinner (Formal, fancy dress, characters) and pretend it s a restaurant Make natural body care Dessert night Exercise night Fashion parade Hang out around the fire pit Have a craft night Karaoke night Watch old home movies and browse photo albums Try Geocaching Treasure hunt Time capsule Video time capsule Interview each other Make your own ice cream sundae Go swimming Make a family mural Stargazing night esp. during special events like meteor showers Watch the sunset Family brainstorm night Make dreams a reality Family night doesn t have to be fancy or complicated. Children just love spending time with you. Have a good old-fashioned game night. It s so much fun to get together with family or friends and laugh the night away.
