1 ISSUE: September 2018 MANAGER S REPORT Dear team, Friends make the world beautiful. This is something we know, but it can be so easy to forget in the rush of our day-to-day lives. Well, August 2018 proved just how true it really is. The sudden loss of our member Katherine Symons on August 11 th plunged our little community in to grief. However the beautiful friendships that Katherine had with so many people, mean that our memories, and smiles that simply appear every time we think of her, are so very much stronger than the sadness of her loss. Ruth and Chris Symons have been great friends of so many of us, for longer than we can remember. I know that they are feeling the love from their New Horizons family and it is the source of great comfort. Displays of great friendship have also come from unexpected places, and you ll be able to see one in our back yard next time you visit the club house. We are overwhelmed at just how much members of The Rotary Club of Launceston have given of themselves, so that our members may have a beautiful, accessible outdoor area to use. And while we talk about the gifts of friendship, I d like to give a shout out to our incredible volunteers. Program leaders, bus drivers, wheelchair fixers, the catering group a team of people who work so hard for New Horizons, offering ongoing friendship which has such a tangible effect on many lives. 4 New Horizons North East Group It s been a busy month for New Horizons members in the North East! A great time was had by all at their latest Tenpin gettogether. If you know anyone with disability in the Scottsdale area who might like to join in some fun local activities with a great group, contact the office and we will put you in touch with Vicki, our wonderful volunteer co-ordinator. North West News North-West members were lucky enough to enjoy a basketball clinic with Mark Radford from Basketball Tasmania. Lyndall tells us that everyone involved had a fantastic time!
5 SONG & DANCE 2018 preparations are a (hot)foot! So, we re not going to show you any photos of our crew dancing just yet, as we want to keep their preparations for the end of year concert a total surprise. BUT, we will say that the class are having an absolute ball with their new teacher Melissa Wimmer - Pearl is very proud to hear how well things are going. Hannah, Meghan and Heather are keeping their lips sealed on what we can expect, but they are clearly enjoying every minute of Melissa s classes! Dinner Club Date Change! 6 August Dinner Club In mid-august a small group enjoyed a cosy evening out at the Inveresk Tavern. Justin and Dingo had enormous parmis that they almost managed to eat and Sid came pretty in pink with a pink drink to match! What s better than a yummy dinner with friends?? 2018 Iceberg Swim- What a day! Our first Iceberg Swim was not only a great success in the fundraising stakes, but also completely hilarious! Who would have thought that swimming in 9 degree water (mid- winter) would be so much fun- let alone so entertaining for the spectators?! 26 brave swimmers took the icy plunge and we now have high hopes to triple that number next year. We couldn t have done it without the support of Launceston Aquatic Centre and Chilli FM, but we really must make special mention of three of our member swimmers, whose fundraising efforts were extraordinary; Katherine Symons, Jacquie Spencer and Jess Holmes raised just shy of $2,300 between them (the day s total was an amazing $6,200). We are so extraordinarily proud of their efforts, and we know that Katherine would have cheered at the total of these three Golden Girls!
7 Tennis Is staring back up with a new location of the Australian Italian Tennis Club at Prospect. The Tennis Club is just behind the Australian Italian Club and is a great spot with new surfaces. Keep an eye in future newsletter for a fun Tennis Tournament later in the year! 2018 Para-sport Talent Search Do you have or know someone with a disability which may be eligible for Para-sport and has the desire to compete at a high-performance level in the future? In collaboration with sporting partners and key stakeholders, the Australian Paralympic Committee are searching for the next generation of talented Para-athletes to compete at a future Paralympic Games, in addition to providing opportunities for Para-athletes already engaged within a Para-sport pathway but may be considering a transition to an alternative sport. Testing sessions are being held across the country to evaluate which Para-sports individuals may be eligible for, in addition to which Para-sports might be best suited depending on the type and level of impairment, history in sport and a range of other considerations. Location: Sunday 7 October 2018, Moonah Sports Centre, 17 Gormanston Road, Moonah Where to register: Registration is available from the registration link Who's eligible to participate: Individuals with a physical impairment, vision impairment or intellectual impairment.
