Athletes, Can all perpetual trophies be returned to the office Steve Yates Board Member New Horizons Board of Management I became interested in New Horizons when I ran into Darlene at a Community / Business Conference last year. We got talking and I said that I was interested in Community based boards. I am currently a Board member of Ravenswood Community Garden which is very interesting. After a gruelling interview by Belinda, Ruth and Darlene, I was successful in becoming a Board member with New Horizons. I am keen to offer my skills and knowledge to the benefit of New Horizons. I am originally from New South Wales but have been living in Launceston since This happened due to me being posted from Townsville to Tasmania when I was serving as an Army Officer. I left the Army in 1990 and have had a variety of roles including at UTAS, Forest Industries, Employment Services and now Child Care. I am currently the chief executive officer of Northern Children s Network which keeps me busy and on the road around the state. I have a blended family of five adult children who are living in different parts of the country. I enjoy painting, reading (science fiction) and walking /cycling. I hope to provide New Horizons the benefits of my experiences. Next newsletter we will introduce another of the board members..stay tuned.

7 2014 Futsal National Championships Canberra. In January this year New Horizons Club took a team of six young men away to represent the Club and the State at the Futsal Nationals. This was the first time ever that Tasmania had an AWD team represent the State. Congratulations to the team members: Sam Singh, Selby Krushka, Dean Foreman, Clinton Williams, Philip De Jong & Tim Dixon. The team certainly made us very proud, playing their hearts out against some very tough competition. The guys never gave up and played hard and we scored in every game but went down to the two NSW teams, VIC and the Champions ACT. The teams determination and vast improvement over the week paid off in our last game against our friends South Australia. We won 3-1, with a goal each to Sam, Tim & Clinton. The whole team played a strong game and all worked so well as a unit. We had the crowd on our side cheering very loudly for us and it was a great end to the week. One of our players Sam Singh was awarded player of the tournament. Sam showed great potential and has been asked to attend selections for the Australian team. Congratulation Sam we are very proud of you! The team were highly praised by the other teams and officials for our great sportsmanship and never give up attitude. The immense improvement in our team was amazing over the week. The guys are already talking about training and getting ready to compete and do even better next year. A big thank you to Lords Taverners, Tasmania for assisting with sponsorship to help get our team to the Nationals and also to Football Tasmania for the donation of playing gear. Picture: Our Tassie team and the South Australian team after our great match. ********************************************************************************** Beach & Surfing Camp January 2014 On the long weekend the Club went to Bicheno with some of our members for a weekend at the beach. Lots of beach cricket, soccer, vortex, frisbee, and swimming was enjoyed by the group as well as a nice dinner at the Beachfront Tavern and eight ball. The next morning everyone hit the beach again and donned on wetsuits to hit the waves for a fun learn to surf session. Everyone had an amazing time and a lot of fun, so much so we are planning on doing it again before the summer is out. So if you missed out on this camp make sure you join us for the next one. A big thank you to Senator Peter Wish-Wilson for helping us organise this camp and sponsoring the surfing lessons. Also thank you to the Surf School. Keep an our eye out for the next camp or register your interest at the club now to make sure you are first to get the info.
