1 February, the month of flowers, chocolate, and love. Valentine s Day, actually a pagan festival. Many believe that Valentine s Day is celebrated to commemorate the anniversary of St. Valentine s death but, there is also a belief that this was an effort to Christianize the pagan celebration of Lupercalia, a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture. During this festival a matchmaking lottery would happen, in which a young man would draw the name of a woman from a jar and be coupled with them for the duration of the festival or even longer if things worked to their benefit. Chauncer and Shakespeare romanticized Valentine s in their work, it gained popularity throughout Britain and the rest of Europe. Handmade paper cards became the tokens-du-jour. In the end, no matter how the holiday came about, we now can enjoy the benefits of our sweet tooth being satisfied. For our Lodge this month, we should focus on all the potential members we can fold into our vibrant group, and make them our Valentine. Woo them with a note, invitation, or chocolate if something stronger is needed. Invite them to our Valentine meeting! We are planning to make Norwegian Waffles on demand for desert, if the smell doesn t win them over, I am sure the taste will, or one of the fun games that famous Bob Carlson will head up. So, get out there and poor on some love in honor of a new kind of Valentine. 2 Page 2 fra Presidenten february 2018 Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm Winston Churchill We have heard it all before we can t do that, members won t like it; that will never work; we tried that before, but it didn t work. My response is that old adage if at first you don t succeed, try, try again. I am not sure of who said it, but it has been traced back to Frederick Maryat a novelist in the early 1800s. I will give you a few examples of not giving up and trying something new. The 3D has sponsored a table at Scanfest in Budd Lake, NJ for the last three Labor Day weekends. The first time we were excited to be there, had a great location, had quite a few people to sign up for our mailing list. We were sure we would get new members. Well, it didn t happen. We did it again the following year, we had great displays, plenty of material but with the same result. The third attempt this past September, we changed our location. Instead of being in the entry area, we set up our table in the vendor area. Well guess what, not only did we get people to sign the list for our mailing list, we gained at least 5 new members! Is it because we changed our location? Is it because attendees were used to seeing us at Scanfest? Or a combination of both? I don t know but are we stoked for this year, you bet! We have held a few events at LOV that were not lodge focused, the lobsterfest comes to mind. This year we tried a Summerfest which combined vendors and antique cars. The 3D sponsored a membership table. We learned a lot from this event and to our great delight, we gained two members!!! As I read your lodge s, I am excited and encouraged to see diverse activities including, ice skating, hiking, kayaking, skiing, concerts, plays and volunteerism all great events and better than sitting in a meeting! As you plan your activities for 2018, do something different. Try something you tried before but may not have worked as you had hoped, maybe it was timing or maybe you just need to tweak it a little. 3 Page 3 lodge Brooklyn January 2018 meeting January happenings at Lodge Brooklyn We enjoyed another successful meeting. It has been decided that Kimberly and Solveig would attend the 3D Convention. If any other members would like to join, please come forward to Kimberly or Solveig to find out more. We are looking for a volunteer to oversee the Cookie Committee to help with our Lodge donation of cookies for the 3D Convention. Alice Danny We need a volunteer to oversee the 3D Convention Basket committee. We need a volunteer to oversee the LOV Basket. We served four different takes on Lapskaus and basically the bowls were licked as there were no left overs. Bob, with the help of Elaine, over saw a truly fun filled game with dice and a wrapped box. Alice brought us reports from past members, current members, as well as reading messages from note cards sent to the Lodge. Beverly, Annie, Mike, and Janice *Please save used postage stamps for Tubfrim. Bring the stamps to our meetings and give to Alice Svege. 8 Page 8 lodge Brooklyn, est It is the intent of Lodge Brooklyn to help preserve the traditions and history of the Norwegian and American Norwegian culture. Our Lodge sits in a unique place, near the bridge that connects these two countries. Many of those who came from Norway in the 1900s landed in Brooklyn, and several of these families stayed for generations raising their children, and then their American-born grandchildren. Woven into our history are both sides of the story. Lodge Brooklyn has a reputation amongst other Lodges of the Sons of Norway as being one of the most fun, down to earth, and lighthearted groups within the organization. We always have a good time as we gather and share past memories and create new ones in a fun, warm, and welcoming environment. cabbage rolls 16 medium cabbage leaves 1 Tsp salt per liter (quart) water 500 g (1 pound) ground beef 1 ¼ Tsp salt 4 Tsp potato starch 3-4 dl (1 ½ cups) full fat milk ½ Tsp pepper ½ Tsp ground ginger ¼ Tsp nutmeg 2 cups lightly salted boiling water Par-boil the cabbage in lightly-salted boiling water until soft, about 2 minutes. Drain well. Cut out the thick stem part. Pre-heat the oven to 160 degrees C (325 degrees F). Mix the ground beef with salt and potato starch. Gradually add milk and season with spices. Place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto each cabbage leaf. Wrap the leaf around the meat to form a small package. Place the cabbage rolls, seam side down, in a greased oven-proof dish. Pour over the water and place the dish in a water bath. Bake for 30 minutes.
