Great is a teacher s influence on his students if they love him. St. John Bosco Catholic schools don t always make their classes single-sex, but at The Atonement Academy, we are able to make the divisions during years that really matter! Co-ed classes are bookends : PreK-4 through Grade 2 are co-ed, then classes aren t fully co-ed again until high school (Grade 9-12). Parents, teachers, students and test scores have kept this practice in place for our students. 2 King s Fair: Sept. 19 Crusader Football Varsity and Middle School Friday was an eventful night for The Atonement Academy Crusader football teams. The MS football team began the evening with a close-fought game against Mount Sacred Heart. The Crusaders lost the game 20-32, but put on an impressive second half. The Crusaders started slowly, but built up momentum, with three touchdowns in the last two quarters of the game, bringing the score within 12 points. Gabe Prochko bounced to the outside three times, with key blocks by Caleb Campbell and Miles Cuellar, getting in the open field and outrunning the competition. The defense was led by Steven Vester and Thomas Christianson, stopping the Eagles at the line throughout the fourth quarter. The night progressed with the Varsity Crusader football team taking on the Winston Eagles on the Eagles home turf. The rain made the game slippery, but the Crusaders started strong, with a touchdown by Travis Prochko in the first quarter. Quarterback Shawn Gutierrez continued to rely on Prochko, and the two accounted for 2 more touchdowns before Prochko was injured in the third quarter. Junior Alex Kisgen kicked two extra points, resulting in the final score of 22 for the Crusaders. Freshman Joey Joiner, junior Shawn Gutierrez, and sophomore Travis Prochko led the defense in tackles, with a strong line being held by sophomore Pedro Alvarado and junior Alex Morrow, who was injured in the second quarter with a hard hit to the head. Sophomore Vanya Arguello provided good blocking, and junior BJ Garza broke through the line several times for yardage. The game was called in the fourth quarter, with a final score of Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Saturday September 19 th is King s Fair our annual festival fundraiser, always filled with fun and great food and drink! Plan to join us for great food and festival games and festivities that include a Jousting Demonstration by the Knights of the Guild at 2:30 on St. Nicholas field. The day begins with Mass at 10am, followed by the Parade of the Royals, when all the classes which have made banners join together for the route through the neighborhood. This year, our own drumline will provide some festive music. Costumes encouraged but certainly not required! There is a Costume Contest for contestants from Pre-K age to adults, with gift cards for example, 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd among the adults is $50, $25 and $15 for both male and female winners. Sell those raffle tickets!

3 Middle School Cross Country Team Success! meet and 99 other runners. Pamela Ituarte, our only 6 th grade girl, medaled in 13 th place of 17:22. She had 68 other girls running against her. Great job 6 th graders! This past Saturday, September 12, the Middle School Cross Country Team did an outstanding job at the 13 th Annual FEAST Patriot Cross Country Invitational. The 6 th grade boys team came in 2 nd place out of 8 teams! Coming in first place was Alexander Pena who ran 2 miles with a time of 12 (minutes):49 (seconds). Diego Boone also medaled in 12 th place of 15 (minutes):18 (seconds). Dominic Peters came in 20 th of 16:01, Thomas Waterman came in 23 rd of 16:08, Nicholas Cordero came in 24 th of 16:18, and Bryce Dye came in 35 th of 17:16. These boys Pamela Ituarte, Diego Boone, and Alexander Pena with their well-earned medals! Parent-Teacher Conferences did an excellent job with their first Parent-Teacher Conferences take place Friday, Sept. 25. NO CLASSES are scheduled that day. Your child s teacher(s) will be corresponding with you to schedule a 15-minute block of time. If you feel you need more time, or would prefer to meet on a different day, please feel welcome to schedule a conference on a day other than the 25th. Our College Nights are now rescheduled: Wednesday, September 30 th for freshmen and sophomores and Thursday, October 1 st for juniors and seniors. Both meetings are at 7 pm. Questions? Alexander Pena goes for the GOLD! The 8 th grade boys had fierce competition with 279 runners in their division. Asa Waterman came in 41 st of 14:12, Nico Ituarte was 50 th of 14:26, Derek Guiterrez came in 54 th with a time of 14:34, Bishara Andonie came in 84 th of 15:08, Franco Navarrete time 17:12, Thomas Christianson time 18:24 and Thorne Christiansontime 22:02. The 7 th and 8 th grade girls also had fierce competition with 228 runners in their division. Jenna Copes came in 27 th with a time of 15:18, Anais Garza came in 38 th of 15:39, Kathleen Morrow (8 th ) came in 101 st of 17:56, Josie Carraway time 18:25, Sarah Trevino time 19:43, and Lexie Carraway time 20:15. Saturday, September 19, 2015 At approximately 11:00 a.m. Each Middle Scholar is requested to accept the following challenge with the spirit and heart of the King s Fair in mind: Come dressed in your medieval best and represent your class in the parade. The class with the highest participation percentage shall hereby win a pizza party! Let the games begin!
