1 UC DAVIS WOMEN S GYMNASTICS WEEKLY RELEASE MPSF Championship Preview 17 March 2015 For Immediate Release easy to see why no MPSF coach can make reliable travel plans as of yet. Contact: Mark Honbo 530/ mwhonbo@ucdavis.edu UC DAVIS LOOKS TO RECLAIM MPSF CHAMPIONSHIP DAVIS, Calif. -- If the 2015 UC Davis women s gymnastics season ended last Friday, that Senior Night home finale would have sounded the highest of high notes with which to end a season. The Aggies set or tied seven school records including an overall score of to outperform No. 21 Washington. Freshman Alexis Brown and junior Stephanie Stamates won Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Week and Specialist of the Week honors, while junior Dani Judal posted the No. 2 all-around score in conference history. In an athlete s career, you get what is known as peak flow performance where everything comes naturally and just sort of flows, said head coach John Lavallee. I ve known from the very beginning that this is a very talented team that has had the ability to put up that kind of performance all year. It just has taken longer to get there than we had hopes for, but it was really amazing to watch that energy in that level of performance. Thus, the Aggies are hitting their stride just in time to achieve one of their preseason goals: to reclaim the MPSF team title. UC Davis won four straight from 2010 to 2013, but was unseated by archrival Sacramento State at the Pavilion last year. Fueling the Aggie fire this weekend are the stakes. The team regional-qualifying score moved up to after Friday s record-breaking score. According to the site RoadToNationals. com, No. 41 UC Davis has not been mathematically eliminated from the race for a top-36 RQS, even though the higher-ranked San Jose State (No. 39) cannot possibly move into that realm. However, No. 36 Maryland needs to score only or higher to move beyond UC Davis reach. Thus, the most likely outcome has the top MPSF squads battling for the individual at-large berths. There is a lot on the line and a lot of scenarios of individual events up for grabs, said Lavallee. This conference meet will be a barn-burner. Indeed, a total of seven MPSF all-arounders will vie for the five individual at-large berths in the West Region. San Jose State s Cami Guyer has clinched such a spot, which leaves a six-way battle between SJSU s Maddie Herr ( RQS), SJSU s Kaitlin Won (38.990), Sacramento State s Lauren Rice (38.945), UC Davis Tiana Montell (38.940), Alaska Anchorage s M rcy Matsunami (38.935) and UC Davis Judal (38.895). Judal still has a road score on her record, which means a 39.0 would raise her RQS by a full tenth. However, Rice still has a on her average, meaning a on Saturday resets her RQS to Compound this with the countless number of permutations, and it s If Montell does not qualify as an all-arounder, she and Aggie sophomore Katy Nogaki will battle for the individual vault spot. Each has tied the school record of this year. Each has an RQS of This begins an equally daunting number of event combinations. If Herr does not make the all-around cut, she lightly shuts Judal from a bars qualification (again, assuming the Aggie junior does not make the all-around cut herself). On beam alone, UC Davis has four regional contenders in Stamates (9.850), Judal (9.800), Cassandra Quebral (9.800) and Brown (9.795). On floor exercise, Hornet Cassie Benning and Aggie Kala DeFrancesco are locked up at 9.845, although equal scores assuming both hit or better help DeFrancesco s average slightly more. Fortunately, the gigantic math problem is something Coach Lavallee and his Aggie gymnasts have chosen to ignore. The focus, he says, is on performance. The judging in Saturday s conference meet will likely be quite different than the judging in Friday s Senior Night meet. I ve told the team that we may very well go to the conference championship, have a better performance than we did on Friday, and only score a 194, Lavallee said. We can t be worried about how the judges score the meet. We have to keep in mind how we will outperform everyone 2015 SCHEDULE/RESULTS (8-10) Date Meet Time/Result Jan. 4 NORCAL CLASSIC 2nd, Jan. 9 at Seattle Pacific 1st, Jan. 16 at Utah w/boise State & Southern Utah 4th, Jan. 23 at Sacramento State 2nd, Jan. 30 at Utah State w/boise State 3rd, Feb. 8 GEORGE WASHINGTON 2nd, Feb. 13 SEATTLE PACIFIC 1st, Feb. 20 at San Jose State 2nd, Feb. 27 SAC STATE/CENTRAL MICHIGAN 1st, Mar. 8 at California 2nd, Mar. 13 WASHINGTON 1st, Mar. 21 at MPSF Championships (Anchorage, Alaska) 7 p.m. Home meets in BOLD CAPS All times Pacific more on

2 UC DAVIS WOMEN S GYMNASTICS WEEKLY RELEASE else in the gym. It boils down to getting yourself to where you re doing your best gymnastics and you re in control. We have to go and do our best gymnastics, and sell to everyone in the gym that we re the best team. That s what we have to think about. The Aggies success has come from a mix of standby stars and emerging success stories, particularly in the second half of the season. Montell, a senior co-captain, has assembled a year that should earn her fourth Outstanding Contribution Award. She shares the conference vault lead at and leads the Aggie all-arounders with a average, boosted by a career-high in Friday s home finale. Montell tied the vault record with a then matched that score on floor to close the meet. Stamates has scored or better 12 times this season, bringing her career total to 37. Most recently, she scored a on beam and tied an 11-year-old Aggie record of on floor. Nogaki shares the conference vault lead with Montell at 9.850, helped by back-to-back 9.900s at home in mid-february. She also helped the Aggies set a program and conference record of on vault on Friday. Judal ranked second in the MPSF on both bars and beam, but raised her star a little higher in the conference constellation with her expanded role as an all-arounder. Her on Friday followed the school road record at Cal just five days earlier. Judal scored in her four events in the UW dual. Two of the biggest boosts down the stretch has come from Brown and DeFrancesco. Brown had started the year with various injuries, so her return to full capacity had been handled cautiously. She made her floor debut in the seventh meet, scoring a at home vs. Seattle Pacific. Since then, Brown has posted all-around scores of , , and In that span, she has won three MPSF Newcomer of the Week nods. Alexis Brown has been a monster, said Lavallee. She really has done an amazing job. She dealt with a turf-toe injury and she came in with a bad ankle injury that she really struggled with. We had to be very careful with her landings. Her ankle and her leg has been in good shape, and I think it s scary to think about what she can accomplish. Her ability as a performer is astonishing. DeFrancesco certainly had been a solid contributor throughout her career, earning four All-MPSF awards in her sophomore and junior seasons, and capping her 2014 with a conference title on bars. This year, however, she has become the team s most reliable performer, hitting 34 of 36 routines for an even greater efficiency rate than the rock-solid Montell. When the Aggies suffered a midseason skid on balance beam, she stepped back into the event for the first time since her freshman year, putting to play the enormous amount of work devoted to that apparatus during the offseason. As a result, DeFrancesco assembled all-around scores of and 3.350, the latter of which would have been a school record if not for the landmark performance by Judal in the same meet. In fact, that sort of unfortunate timing has largely kept DeFrancesco off the radar in terms of conference recognition. Her season all-around debut of against Seattle Pacific came on the same night that Judal and Montell broke the 39-point barrier. Her at Cal have been a school road record if not for Judal s Even her incredible Friday performance, which included a school-record on bars and a on floor exercise, occurred in a week with command performances throughout the MPSF. Nonetheless, DeFrancesco s achievements have not gone unappreciated by her teammates nor by Coach Lavallee. Kala DeFrancesco has totally willed her way to a high performance this year, he said. She is a woman on a mission, and she will not be denied. Coming off her junior year, where she won all-conference on three events, she has really learned how to compete, how to perform, and how to maintain that level of consistency that you need in collegiate gymnastics. That s really hard to do, and I ve been absolutely amazed at what she has accomplished. Sophomore Yonni Michovska also found her stride on vault in the season s second half, scoring in three of the final four meets. She also endured a rough patch on bars, only to emerge with a career-high on uneven bars. Senior bars specialist and team co-captain Lisa Wiktorski also looks to close out her career in strong form. After leading the league in RQS, she has gone through an up-and-down swan song. However, she owns an explosive routine that has scored as high as (at Sacramento State) this year. Freshman Amanda Presswood also enters the conference meet doing her best gymnastics, hitting scores of and in the home stretch as the floor squad s leadoff performer. Finally, UC Davis has one particular success story worth rallying support from afar. Cassandra Quebral walked on to the team not long after her 17th birthday, redshirted her first year in 2012, then made just two lineup appearances and a smattering of exhibition routine in 2013 and The same work ethic that she puts into the classroom (she holds the highest GPA of any Aggie veteran) has resulted in a season in which she is tied for second in the MPSF beam standings. Quebral has scored or better five times, including the last Friday. She also has an outside chance of passing teammate Stamates for the NCAA at-large spot on beam, assuming Judal does not eclipse both of them. UC Davis will open Saturday s meet with a bye, then compete on floor in the second rotation. The Aggies first won an MPSF title in 2008, yielded it to Alaska Anchorage in 2009, then captured the next four championships. In 2014, when West Region rivals San Jose State and Sacramento State returned to the conference, the Hornets claimed the title with a then-record Host UAA will hold a live video stream at com/uaa/. Live results are also available at com/fls/13400/livestats/gymnastics/ / htm.

4 COACHING STAFF JOHN LAVALLEE Head Coach 9th Year Springfield 86 John Lavallee has wasted no time in establishing his mark on the Aggie women s gymnastics program. In eight seasons at the Aggie helm, he has earned Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year five times. In his first seven, Lavalee had guided nine student-athletes to 14 individual at-large berths in the NCAA West Regional. His program captured five MPSF team championships, including four straight from 2010 to However, his crowing achievement with the Aggie women s gymnastics program came in That year, UC Davis set or tied team event records on all four events plus the total score of at home against Seattle Pacific on February 28. In all, the Aggies scored seven of their all-time top 10 totals during that year, resulting in a school-record RQS of , a No. 34 national ranking and the program s first team berth to the NCAA postseason since UC Davis finished fifth at the NCAA Fayetteville Regional. That year served as a follow-up to what had been a historic 2013, during which the Aggies compiled a RQS almost a full tenth of a point better than the previous high. Lavallee s student-athletes have also performed in the classroom, winning four straight Marya Welch Awards for the highest women s team GPA at UC Davis. Additionally, Aggie women s gymnastics has earned four consecutive NCAA Public Recognition Awards for Academic Progress Rate ( ) and seven straight NACGWC/W Academic Team honors ( ). Before arriving at UC Davis, Lavallee enjoyed a successful three-year stint as the top assistant for longtime Yale mentor Barbara Tonry. In the past two seasons, he and Tonry guided six Bulldogs to at-large appearances at the NCAA Northeast Regional. Furthermore, Yale captured an Ivy League title in Prior to his stop in New Haven, Lavallee spent 11 years as director and head coach of the Sterling Academy of Gymnastics in Sterling, Mass. In addition to his work with club s recreational programs, which grew to more than 1,000 students, Lavallee coached champions at the state, regional and national level, plus a member of the 2002 Junior Olympic National Team. He served as meet director at many levels including the 1999 USAG Eastern Championships. Also during his time at Sterling, Lavallee taught gymnastics as a physical education course at Atlantic Union College in Lancaster, Mass. While at the Sterling Academy of Gymnastics, Lavallee earned three USAG Service Awards for his contributions to his sport and served as a member of the USAG State Administrative Committee as Massachusetts Junior Olympic representative. Lavallee was a collegiate gymnast at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. In 1986, he earned U.S. Gymnastics Federation All-America honors on floor exercise and served as team captain. Lavallee earned his bachelor s degree in general studies in 1987, then returned for his master of education in While completing his master s work, he served as a graduate assistant for the Chiefs (now the Pride) and taught gymnastics classes in the physical education department. Lavallee s wife, Teri, served on the Aggie gymnastics coaching staff as an assistant coach. 5 COACHING STAFF TAMARA ROSS Assistant Coach 4th Year San Diego State 71 CAROLYN KAMPF Assistant Coach 5th Year UC Davis 07 Former Sacramento State assistant coach Tamara Ross crossed the Yolo Causeway to join the UC Davis women s gymnastics staff as John Lavallee s top assistant prior to the 2010 season. She serves all aspects of the program, working primarily with balance beam in the gym. In 2012, her work in that particular area earned Ross a nod as the MPSF Assistant Coach of the Year. In 2014, during a historic season in which the Aggies earned their first NCAA team appearance since 1998 and compiled a school-record RQS, Ross captured even higher honors: NACGC/W West Region Assistant Coach of the Year. The accolade was well-founded, as UC Davis posted six of its seven all-time best beam scores that year, including the school-record on February 21. Ross served eight years as a team choreographer for Hornet mentor Kim Hughes. She served from , then returned in 2004 to coach for four more years. Ross guidance helped Stefanie Aeder set a school record on floor exercise and qualify for back-to-back NCAA West Regionals. Between her tenures at the collegiate and club level, Ross brings a quarter-century of experience to the Aggies. As a club coach and a member of the NorCal Coaches Association, she earned Optional Coach of the Year in 1996 and Choreographer of the Year on three occasions (1994, 1995 and 1997). In 2005, Ross was selected to coach the U.S. open women s gymnastics team at the Maccabi Games in Israel. Under her tutelage, the American squad posted a second-place finish and had individuals finish second on floor and beam. More locally, Ross served on the Sacramento Sports Commission local organizing committee, helping bring the 1999 John Hancock U.S. Gymnastics Championships to Sacramento. A 1971 graduate of San Diego State, Ross later earned her master s degree from Sacramento State. She and her husband Arthur have two sons, Brian and Greg. Former Aggie Carolyn Kampf enters her seventh year on the gymnastics coaching staff in She works primarly with the vault squad. In both 2011 and 2013, her efforts were rewarded with MPSF Assistant Coach of the Year co-honors. In 2014, Kampf s efforts helped the Aggies score four of their 10 highest vault team scores in school history, including a school-record in a home quad meet on January 26. That served as one of many highlights in a landmark season that saw UC Davis amass a program-record RQS of and earn its first team berth to the NCAA postseason since Originally from All-Olympians Gymnastics Center and Palisades Charter High in Los Angeles, Kampf lettered four years at UC Davis, competing primarily on bars and floor in her final two seasons. She enjoyed a career-best meet against Seattle Pacific on a senior, scoring personal highs of on bars and on floor in the meet. Kampf, who graduated in 2007 with a psychology degree, also captured MPSF All-Academic honors as a junior and senior. She later earned an M.S. degree in counseling with a specialization in career counseling from Sacramento State in In addition to her coaching duties, Kampf serves as an academic skills specialist for the Aggie athletics department.
