They also picked up the second win against Sacramento State ( ) in standings toward the Causeway Cup, presented by ScholarShare... The Aggies and Hornets will meet two more times this season, making each matchup worth 1.25 points... Junior Anna Shumaker enjoyed the highest individual event finishes for UC Davis, placing T5th on vault at then finishing the meet with a team season-high on beam, good for 3rd place... Most impressively, according to head coach John Lavallee, she hit that score despite the crowd noise and music for UCLA s 12-time All-American Vanessa Zamarripa s floor exercise ( Most visiting gymnasts can t do that, he said.)... The attendance for Sunday s meet at Pauley Pavilion was 4,234, more than three times larger than the crowd at Washington s Hec Ed on January Senior Katie Yamamura notched a in the allaround, highlighted by her on bars. Week after week, the Aggies depth continues to stand as the collective unsung hero toward the team score... Tiana Montell competed on three events for the first time this season, tying her PR on bars (9.725) while posting scores of on vault and on beam... Kala De- Francesco made her bars debut, scoring a on the third rotation... The mean also ranks seventh in the West Region, slightly ahead of Sacramento State ( ) and San Jose State ( )... Shumaker leads the MPSF on vault (9.804) and ranks 2nd on beam (9.708), floor (9.721) and all-around (38.538)... Ho s is tops in the conference, 17th in the West... Stamates edges Shumaker for the top MPSF spot on floor (9.780), 21st regionally. UP NEXT: After an extended week prior to UCLA, the Aggies will go through a short week of practice before turning around for a Friday night dual at Seattle Pacific... This is the second of four meetings between the two teams: UC Davis scored a in the home dual on February 1... Both teams will square off at San Jose State on Mar. 8 before convening for the final time at the conference meet on Mar SPU has scored exactly in the past two meets, namely the MPSF showdown at UC Davis and a home dual against San Jose State last weekend... Friday s meet will serve as a farewell to seniors Stephanie Wagner and Corrine Wise... Wise finished 2nd on floor (9.775) in the dual with SJSU... Sophomores Syndey Clark and Shannon Escarra have respectively scored as high as and in the all-around this season. HEAD COACH JOHN LAVALLEE: On UCLA quadrangular: It was really amazing to go into that gym, probably one of the toughest places in the country to compete. It was a coming-of-age day for UC Davis gymnastics. It was a difficult environment with a lot of stuff going on. There were four teams in there, and more than 4,000 very loud fans. It s Pauley Pavilion. This team has been looking forward to performing at this meet for a couple of weeks. It has been in their sights, and it really did show. I was incredibly impressed, up and down the lineup, through all 24 routines, how we performed. Obviously, we ve done a very good job at continuing to raise our performance level. We still want to do that. We went to UCLA and had a very good meet. Now we have six more meets coming up, and we can completely forget about everything we ve done so far... and we ve been off the charts so far. So I think we re in great position going into the second half. We re healthy, we have depth on every event, and I feel we re really in the driver s seat to go out and make history. Yami [Katie Yamamura] is getting comfortable in competition. She was really on top of things yesterday. The only thing she missed was one of those technical things, a connection bonus. In all four events, she was really strong. And Anna is in very good position. She hasn t gone 39 yet and I m pretty sure she is going to. The sophomores and juniors have done a very good job stepping up, and our freshmen have gotten to the middle of the season with an understanding for what it s all about. 3 Coaching Staff JOHN LAVALLEE Head Coach 7th Year Springfield 86 John Lavallee has wasted no time in establishing his mark on the Aggie women s gymnastics program. In each of his first three seasons, he earned Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year honors. In six overall years, he has guided eight student-athletes to 11 individual at-large berths in the NCAA West Regional. In 2008, Lavallee mentored his program to its first MPSF team title, which the Aggies won with a school-record The team has also captured three straight conference championships from 2010 through In addition to his MPSF titles, Lavallee has brought the program a step closer to his goal of transforming UC Davis into an NCAA regional qualifier. The Aggies finished 39th in the national RQS rankings with a school-record in 2010, then ended up 43rd ( ) on the leaderboard in No UC Davis team had compiled an RQS higher than prior to those two years. For his part, Lavallee garnered NACGC/W West Region Coach of the Year acclaim in Lavallee s student-athletes have also performed in the classroom, winning four straight Marya Welch Awards for the highest women s team GPA at UC Davis. Additionally, Aggie women s gymnastics has earned back-to-back NCAA Public Recognition Awards for Academic Progress Rate (2011 and 2012) and five straight NACGWC/W Academic Team honors ( ). Before arriving at UC Davis, Lavallee enjoyed a successful three-year stint as the top assistant for longtime Yale mentor Barbara Tonry. In the past two seasons, he and Tonry guided six Bulldogs to at-large appearances at the NCAA Northeast Regional. Furthermore, Yale captured an Ivy League title in Prior to his stop in New Haven, Lavallee spent 11 years as director and head coach of the Sterling Academy of Gymnastics in Sterling, Mass. In addition to his work with club s recreational programs, which grew to more than 1,000 students, Lavallee coached champions at the state, regional and national level, plus a member of the 2002 Junior Olympic National Team. He served as meet director at many levels including the 1999 USAG Eastern Championships. Also during his time at Sterling, Lavallee taught gymnastics as a physical education course at Atlantic Union College in Lancaster, Mass. While at the Sterling Academy of Gymnastics, Lavallee earned three USAG Service Awards for his contributions to his sport and served as a member of the USAG State Administrative Committee as Massachusetts Junior Olympic representative. Lavallee was a collegiate gymnast at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. In 1986, he earned U.S. Gymnastics Federation All-America honors on floor exercise and served as team captain. Lavallee earned his bachelor s degree in general studies in 1987, then returned for his master of education in While completing his master s work, he served as a graduate assistant for the Chiefs (now the Pride) and taught gymnastics classes in the physical education department. Lavallee s wife, Teri, also serves on the Aggie gymnastics coaching staff as an assistant coach.
