2 YEAR-IN-REVIEW Bruins Win First NCAA Title The UCLA women s tennis team turned in a spectacular finish to its 2008 season, winning 15 of its last 16 matches to eventually capture the program s first NCAA title. It marked the first national championship for the program since the 1981 team won the AIAW title. In addition, the Bruins 24 wins on the season was the most in more than 25 years (the 1982 team was 29-4). UCLA entered last years NCAA Tournament as the No. 7 seed, hosting first and second round action at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. After breezing past Buffalo and Denver in the first and second rounds, respectively, the Bruins earned a trip to the round of 16 in Tulsa, Okla. Once in Tulsa, UCLA notched wins over No. 10 USC (4-0), No. 17 Arkansas (4-0) and No. 6 Florida (4-2) to earn a spot in the championship match against No. 8 Cal, a team that the Bruins split matches with during the regular season. Unlike the two previous encounters (both 4-3 decisions) UCLA took a 4-0 victory over Cal in the title match to claim the championship. The match was clinched at the No. 1 singles court, where Riza Zalameda downed Suzi Babos, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. NCAA All-Tournament Selections Riza Zalameda was named the Most Outstanding Player at last year s NCAA Championships, as the Bruin senior played a pivotal role in both singles and doubles during UCLA s title run. She and teammate Andrea Remynse (No. 4 spot) were named to the all-tournament team at their respective singles positions. Zalameda and partner Tracy Lin were also named to the all-tournament team at the No. 1 doubles position, as was the tandem of Alex McGoodwin and Yasmin Schnack (No. 3 spot). Lin/Zalameda Win NCAA Tracy Lin and Riza Zalameda became the sixth team in school history to capture the NCAA Championship, posting a three-set victory over Fresno State s Melanie Gloria/Tinesta Rowe in the championship match. Lin and Zalameda, seeded No. 1 in the NCAA draw, posted a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over the second-seeded tandem of Gloria and Rowe. They became the first Bruin team to capture the NCAA title since Daniela Bercek and Lauren Fisher in Pac-10 Champions Although it was overshadowed by their eventual run to the national championship, the Bruins captured the program s first Pac-10 title in UCLA and Stanford actually tied for the title after both teams finished with identical 7-1 The 2008 Bruins visited the White House and President George W. Bush. records in conference play. The Bruins clinched a share of the title by defeating USC, 5-2 in the final match of the regular season. UCLA had finished second on six prior occasions before claiming a share of last year s title. Bruins End Year No. 1 UCLA ended the year as the No. 1 ranked team in the country in the final rankings issued by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The team was ranked in the top 10 every week but one during the year. Individually, Riza Zalameda ended as the team s highest ranked singles player, checking in at No. 8 to finish the year. She was followed by No. 23 Tracy Lin, No. 38 Andrea Remynse, No. 44 Yasmin Schnack, No. 98 Elizabeth Lumpkin and No. 122 Alex McGoodwin. Lin and Zalameda ended the season No. 1 in doubles. They were followed by No. 55 Lumpkin and Stephanie Wetmore. Ojai Champions Senior Riza Zalameda defeated second-seeded Amanda Fink of USC, 6-3, 6-4 in the finals of the Pac-10 Championships, becoming the first Bruin player to win the main draw singles title in Ojai since Sara Walker in Zalameda, who was seeded fourth in the tournament, dropped just one set in five matches. Also winning a singles title at the Pac-10 Championships was senior Alex McGoodwin, who defeated Arizona State s Wendy Pilecka, 7-6(7), 6-1 in the Invitational singles final. McGoodwin then teamed with freshman Andrea Remynse to win the Invitational doubles title, defeating Cal s Rachael Dillon/Daron Moore, 8-1. All-Pac-10 Honors UCLA s Stella Sampras Webster and Riza Zalameda earned Pac-10 Coach of the Year and Player of the Year honors, respectively when the conference named its year-end award winners for women s tennis. Zalameda also earned Pac-10 Team of the Year honors with partner Tracy Lin, who was a second-team selection. Freshman Andrea Remynse was an honorable mention selection. UCLA also had four players on All-Pac-10 Academic teams, as Elizabeth Lumpkin, Alex McGoodwin and Lin were all first-team selections. Zalameda was named to the second team. Zalameda would also go on to be named the Pac-10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. ITA Awards Tracy Lin and Riza Zalameda were named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association s (ITA) Team of the Year in 2008, becoming the first Bruin tandem to win the award since its inception in Zalameda was also named the ITA s National Senior Player of the Year. Senior Elizabeth Lumpkin was the West Region s recipient of the ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership & Sportsmanship. Final ITA Team Rankings All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention Final Pac-10 Standings 1.
