2 HOW TO SURVIVE BREAKAWAY WHERE IT ALL BEGINS Suggestions to help your Breakaway experience be the BEST: Use the 2012 Breakaway promo video ( and begin promoting NOW! Breakaway can be a great growing experience for your youth group as well as an outreach to your fringe kids. Sleep??? Might not happen (get plenty before you come). The $55 is just for the Breakaway registration fee. You will need to charge your students for their lodging (see more about lodging under hotel below), transportation, meals en route, and also let them know they can bring extra money for the Breakaway store and to order pizza. Meals included for the weekend: 3 meals Saturday and breakfast Sunday. There is opportunity to order pizzas to be delivered to your hotel room but you need to pre-order them through the Breakaway Store Friday night at North and then Saturday night, find Cheri and helpers during the banquet. Girls One piece swimsuits at the hotel remind them to bring a towel. Many of the churches make t-shirts (hand-made w/ fabric markers or have them printed). One site to utilize is Standard turn time is 14 days but you can do a rush order (10 days) but that adds 25% to your order. On Friday night have your students submit their fine arts exhibit, video (for video competition) and sign up for a time slot to perform their music/drama selection. Be sure this does not interfere with sports (basketball is Saturday morning, volleyball is Saturday afternoon). Upon arrival at Des Moines Christian Saturday a.m., check out 1 pager per church from the control table as soon as you arrive so you and your students can be located throughout the day. Wear comfortable shoes since you will be doing a lot of running around. The music rooms are located in a different area of the school quite a distance from the gymnasium allow plenty of time to arrive at your scheduled performance time. Hotel Room reservations need to be with a credit card made with the hotel by the stated deadline and you may be held responsible for any room cancellations. This has to be a very firm number based on your breakout of girls and guys, including sponsors. Room assignments (names per room) can come later but need to be faxed to the hotel and to Ted and Jan at least a week prior. The hotel rates quoted are per night you are staying 2 nights. King suites are $97/night; double/double suites are $138/night (plus 12% hotel tax) Putting 5 people (on the average) in a double/double or 3.5 people (on the average) in a king works out to be approximately $30/person/night - this is possible because each room also has a foldout couch in a separate room. There are limited number of doubles on each floor so if you want to stay together as a group, reserve a mix of rooms (kings & doubles) Banquet Traditionally, the banquet is a dressy occasion and most of the students and sponsors do dress up, however this is optional jeans are perfectly acceptable. There are assigned tables (by church) at the banquet. Directions to North High School: Take the 2 nd Avenue exit off I35/80 and go south to Holcomb. Take a right on Holcomb and school will be on your right. On Friday night, registration begins at 6:30. The three-point shooting contest will be at 7:00. Hope to see you there! Breakaway contact: Ted & Jan Houser - t.houser@mchsi.com; (Ted); (Jan)

9 EVENT REGISTRATION Each year some aspects of sports scheduling (volume, changes, combined teams, etc.) makes scheduling more difficult and time consuming. We need to know, prior to your actual arrival, the exact number of events and entries that your church will be competing in. We also know that often you will probably not know who is going to compete until everyone shows up to leave for Breakaway. In order to solve both problems we have developed this Event Registration Fax Sheet. Fill out the appropriate entries and fax this sheet to: UNION PARK BAPTIST CHURCH AT EVENT REGISTATION FAX SHEET Please fill in information below: CHURCH: CITY: ADULT SPONSOR: SPONSOR CELL # Deadline for faxing your event entries is 10:00 P.M. Please keep in mind the maximum entries allowed in each event as described on the Breakaway Competition Events form attached. If an event is not listed on this form then you will simply register for that event when you arrive at Breakaway and we do not need the information for that event faxed. If your church needs to combine with another church for any team sports because you do not have enough to field a team write combine under entries for that event. 13 Breakaway Interpretive Reading Competition Rules Topic: There is no set topic. Any material from a Christian publication that shows a biblical concept or a scriptural point is acceptable. Explanation: For choosing a selection you may think about: Campus Life or Moody Monthly articles, books from your church library, fiction novels based on biblical characters such as Two From Galilee by Marjorie Holm, or a narrative portion of scripture. 1. Each contestant will present one or more poetry/prose selections or combination of both at a single performance read from his/her own copy. 2. Selections are not to be memorized. However, familiarity with the script is encouraged allowing eye contact with the audience, to allow development of characters and to allow vocal, facial and bodily tensions. (The basic concept in interpretive reading is similar to reading to a child you read so well, with such expression that the child can picture the story and think it is fun!) Emphasis is placed on vocal and facial involvement pausing, rate, varying loudness, facial expressions of doubt, fear, etc., whatever is called for by the script. 3. The contestant should use an original introduction with remarks that are designed to let the audience know what is the point or issue of the reading. If you use more than one selection, other original transition comments may need to be made. 4. Judging will be categorically similar to Iowa High School Speech Association. The following are sample judging criteria to help each contestant be aware of areas being evaluated. This information should be helpful in preparation. Friday night, each contestant should pick up copies of the judging sheets they will need for their competition. These should be handed to the judges along with 2 copies (three copies in all one for contestant, two for judges) of the reading prior to the performance. It also includes the idea of sacred classics such as The Holy City and other old standards of Christian/Religious music. In the last two years, we have seen an increase in the use of secular songs in place of contemporary Christian in the vocal music competition. With the support of the IBC Youth Pastors LEAD Team, we are attempting to develop a standard for determining what is secular and what is contemporary Christian. To do this, we have found two web sites that should be of help in determining the acceptability of songs you want to sing. The sites are and 3. All vocal music must be memorized. 19 BREAKAWAY COUNSELOR JOB DESCRIPTION Being a counselor at any youth event puts you in the position of having the greatest spiritual impact on the lives of your students. No matter how good the program or the speaker, you and the way you conduct yourself will be what they remember and model the most. With that in mind, we ask that you observe these following guidelines. 1. Be with your students. Know where they are at all times. 2. Be on time for events. Have your students where they need to be when they need to be there. Be their greatest cheerleader, whether the event is music, drama or sports. 3. Be positive. Your attitude will be reflected by your students. If you have a problem with the organization or program of the weekend, please discuss it with the coordinator or breakaway staff. Remember also, that all the officials are volunteers and some mistakes will be made in their officiating. However, we are not blessed with a T.V. review process so if you don t agree with a call, remember that the next bad call may be in your favor. The sportsmanship you model will be mirrored by your students. 4. Remember that your job does not end when you get to the hotel. You are responsible for the behavior of your students. The hotel has other guests and we want to leave a good impression. a) Show respect for others. No running in the hallways No slamming of doors No riding on elevators b) Be in your rooms at 12:30 AM. (Do not wait to be reminded) c) Students of the opposite sex in the same room must have the door open or have a counselor present. 5. Remember why we have Breakaway: To have fun in competition and grow together as a group, but more importantly to see God work in the lives of young people. Make sure you take time to talk about the things that matter the most. A devotional guide is provided. Find out where they are in their walk with God. Have them fill out the evaluation/response cards. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE! Page 16
