Steve Bell KD4TFN: sbell@hiwaay.net The Gig gle Box HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO EVERYBODY THAT WAS BORN IN JANUARY!! A note from Giggles: We had a lot of fun at the HARC Christmas Party. We played Dirty Santa and ate a lot of food. Of course, there was a lot of food left, but nobody went away hungry un less they chose to. Everyone seemed to en - joy the different conversations and hope fully got to know other people. I use to be shy and wouldn t talk to new people, but now I try to meet the new ones that come to the club meet - ings. I, sometimes am surprised at peo - ple when they call me by name but I can t remem ber theirs. Just a month or so ago, I talked to some one from Eng - land and he was an in ter est ing per son to talk to. I wish ev ery one at the club would make a New Year s res o lu tion to speak to a new per son once a week this year. CUL A Story or Two 1. A vul ture boards an air plane, car - rying two dead rac coons. The stew ard - ess looks at him and says, I m sorry, sir, only one car rion al lowed per pas sen - ger. 2. Two hy dro gen at oms meet. One says, I ve lost my Elec tron. The other says Are you sure? The first re plies, Yes, I m pos i tive. 3. A woman has twins and gives them up for adop tion. One of them goes to Spain, they name him Juan ; the other went to a fam ily in Egypt and is named Ahmal. Years later, Juan sends a pic ture of himself to his birth mother. Upon re - ceiv ing the pic ture, she tells her hus - band that she wishes she also had a pic ture of Ahmal. Her hus band re - Page 3 sponds, They re twins! If you ve seen Juan, you ve seen Ahmal. 4. A group of fri ars were behind on their bel fry pay ments, so they opened up a small flo rist shop to raise funds. Since ev ery one liked to buy flowers from the men of God, a rival florist across town thought the competition was un fair. He asked the good fathers to close down, but they would not. He went back and begged the friars to close. They ig nored him. So, the rival flo rist hired Hugh MacTaggart, the rough est and most vi cious thug in town to per suade them to close. Hugh beat up the fri ars and trashed their store, say ing he d be back if they didn t close up shop. Ter rified, they did so, thereby prov ing that only Hugh can prevent flo rist fri ars. Things to make you go HMMMM!! I used to eat a lot of natural foods un - til I learned that most people die of nat - u ral causes. Gar dening Rule: When weeding, the best way to make sure you are remov -

4 ing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it co mes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy a replacement. Never take life seriously Nobody gets out alive any way. There are two kinds of pedestrians: the quick and the dead. Life is sexually transmitted. Health is merely the slow est pos si ble rate at which one can die. The only differ ence between a rut and a grave is the depth. Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, ly ing in hos - pitals dying of nothing. Have you noticed since everyone has a camcorder these days no one talks about seeing UFOs like they used to? When ever I feel blue, I start breathing again. All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no atten tion to criticism. In the 60 s, peo ple took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal. How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes nearly a box full to start a camp fire? *** A couple drove down a country road for sev eral miles, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an ar gu - ment and neither of them wanted to concede their po si tion. As they passed a barnyard of mules, goats, and pigs, the hus - band asked sarcastically, Relatives of yours? Yep, the wife replied, in-laws. The Hint for the Month of Jan u ary Scaling a fish is easier if vinegar is rubbed on the scales first. The Thought for the Month of Jan u ary Don t ask your self what the world needs; ask your self what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Be - cause what the world needs is people who have come alive. Howard Thurman - Solve the Puzzle: A LECDNA SSELO OTNHGIN BY GGIHTLIN OHTERNA LECDNA. - Erin Majors - Peggy Bell (Giggles) K4EGB pbell@hiwaay.net Joint HARC/NARA Mailing There was a pretty good turnout on December 14 to help in pre paring the mailout for the joint HARC/NARA mem ber - ship drive. The goal was to send re-up material to all cur - rent members of each organization as well as to as many of the li censed ham families we could in the area cov ered by the two organizations. It is a really co operative effort, with costs shared by HARC, NARA and the Huntsville Hamfest. The Hamfest pro vides the software used to prepare and sort the address list for bulk mailing and it ain t cheap!. The actual mailing will take place, probably on December 27 or 28 so as to get the ma te rial in ev erybody s hands before the joint membership meet ing sched uled for January 11. Folks work ing away at preparing the joint HARC/NARA membership mailing Photo by Joe Sturbois, WB4RIU From The Editor s Wastebasket From the short age of Vox ma te rial this month, I d guess that just about ev ery body is oc cu pied with various end-of-year hol i day ac tiv i ties seems to have been a pretty good year for HARC, and if plans that are being con - sid ered reach re al ity, 2008 should be a banner year. We should see the Ex tra Class study pro gram launched early in the year and, if we re lucky, fi nally get something accomplished on 501-C sta tus. The one thing we need is in ter est ing programs at the HARC meet ings. I ve said it to the point, I m sure, of bore - dom, but I still think that al most any mem ber of the club could put to gether a pro gram that would be of interest to the mem ber ship. It would be a real boost to the interest and, prob a bly, the turn out at meet ings if we had a reputation for in ter est ing pro grams. Why don t you see what you could do along those lines in Congrats to Greg Sarratt, W4OZK on his elevation to ARRL South east ern Di vi sion Di rec tor. Ex pect the on line Vox to change back to it s usual less col - or ful state next month. I fig ured to go with it for one more month, since this will reach most of you be fore Christmas and New Year s Day. My best to ev ery body dur ing this hol i day season. I hope ev ery body has a great (and safe) time. Be careful on New Year s Eve, you want to be sure and be around for the bowl games. 73, Frank Emens, W4HFU Page 4
