4 SOKOL/SOKOLICE WINTER Gymnastics Report By Gerald Novotny, Men s Gym Director The beautiful Blessed Sacrament gymnasium stood empty the past two Tuesday evenings as we were forced to cancel our Winter Program and subsequent class period because of severe cold and snow. The grant will allow us to purchase two 6 ft. by 12 ft. landing mats to replace our two existing mats that have seriously deteriorated over the years. We also plan to recover our balance beam. It was particularly unfortunate that we had to cancel our Winter Program which was already postponed once earlier. I know many were looking forward to attending. We will be rescheduling our Winter Program in February but first need to get back into the gym and work out the kinks from snow shoveling. Other equipment upgrades are contemplated however timing of future improvements may depend on whether Blessed Sacrament is open a long term use of the gymnasium. 75 TH HOLIDAY FOLK FAIR A SUCCESS The 75th Annual Edition of the Holiday Folk Fair was from all reports a big success. Both the Sales Booth and Food Booth did a brisk business and the Czechs won another award this time for Best Depiction of Culture. I wasn t able to watch our gymnasts perform at the Young Peoples Showcase at the Holiday Folk Fair this year but I have heard nothing but good reports on show. Please keep your eyes open for messages on the Winter Program. We are anxious to show you what our young gymnasts are capable of. Sokol Milwaukee Awarded a Grant for Gym Equipment Sokol Milwaukee was awarded a Gateway to the Future Grant from the American Sokol Foundation. The $1500 grant for our Sokol Milwaukee Equipment Upgrade Project. Thanks to all our many volunteers who make this event successful for us and for the thousands who attend.
5 SOKOL/SOKOLICE WINTER Leroy Bauman Life long Sokol, Brother Leroy Bauman passed away. Bauman was an enthusiastic Sokol and exceptional gymnast. He was Milwaukee City high school Allaround Champion and UW Letter winner. Leroy and Blanche Bauman, along with Pat Hron performed the Senior Calisthenics Drill at the 2001 Slet in Detroit. His obituary is below. Appleton - Leroy Bauman, 92, found eternal peace on December 2, He was born November 2, 1926 in Milwaukee, WI to John and Mary (Svec) Bauman. Roy enlisted in the army during WW II and was assigned to the Occupation of Japan in He re-enlisted as a First Lieutenant in the Korean War and served from July 1951-May 1952 as a platoon leader in the 27th Infantry Regiment. He returned to marry the love of his life, Blanche (Haluza) Bauman in Milwaukee on June 2, Roy completed his Bachelor of Arts degree and then law degree from UW Madison in He was on the UW gymnastics team and even masqueraded as Bucky Badger at sporting events. He worked as a claim's superintendent for State Farm Insurance which landed him in Appleton in 1967 with a career that spanned 35 years. Roy and Blanche were blessed with four children: Lee (Peggy) Bauman, Madison, WI, Thomas (Debby) Bauman, Delafield, WI, Susan Kilian, Appleton, WI and Sally (John) Lewinski, Waupaca, WI; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Roy is survived by his wife Blanche. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers: John, Michael and Frank. Roy influenced us with a strong work ethic, yet he taught us the importance of placing family ahead of many material pursuits. He had a big heart and he was always on the go to support his kid's and grandkid's sporting events and graduations. He enjoyed singing with the Fox Valleyaires barbershop group, golfing, boy scout outings and making maple syrup. He remained active with Sokol, a Czech gymnastics/ athletic organization that maintained a base in Milwaukee. Roy had a zest for life and a thirst for knowledge which allowed him to enjoy his books and the Post Crescent even as his health failed. He cherished his family history and his Czech/Croation heritage. The family would like to thank the entire staff at Park Vista in Waupaca for their outstanding care and compassion. Their hard work allowed Roy and Blanche to spend their last years together. Blanche was his rock, his true love. Na schledanou, until we meet again. Visitation for Roy will be held at the Brettschneider Trettin - Nickel Funeral Chapel on Friday, January 4th, 2019 from 2 PM until 4 PM with a celebration of his life beginning at 4 PM In lieu of flowers, a gift in Roy's name may be made to Friends of Appleton Public Library.
6 SOKOL/SOKOLICE WINTER SOKOL MILWAUKEE SOCIAL EVENT TREE KINGS DINNER My tři králové jdeme k Vám, štěstí, zdraví vinšujeme Vám We three kings are coming to you and wishing you health and happiness. According to the Bible, Three Kings marks the day three wealthy men (Kăpar, Melichar, Baltazar) arrived in Bethlehem to bow in front of the little baby Jesus and bring him presents of gold, frankincense and myrrh. For many Czech families Three Kings means the end of the holidays and a time to take down Christmas decorations, the Christmas tree, and the closing of the last remaining open Christmas markets. For Western Christians this day marks the end of Christmas celebrations and the beginning of the liturgical break. Party - carnival time is coming! While for Eastern Christians this day marks the beginning of Christmas. Along with a visit from the Three Kings, the day also has the tradition of the chalking of the K + M + B (the new year added) above one s door entrance. While many people think these letters are the first letters of the king s names, in reality they actually reference the Latin saying Christus Mansionem Benedicat (My Jesus Christ Bless this House) with the plus signs being the sign of the cross, and symbolizing the Holy Trinity. Note: The letter C is sometimes used instead of the K, which is common in other European countries. Three Kings depicted by famous Czech artist Josef Lada. This year 38 Sokol Milwaukee members, and some new friends of Sokol Milwaukee, gathered on Sunday, January 6, 2019, at a packed Polonez Restaurant in St. Francis, to enjoy a delicious Polish Buffet, enjoy each others company, and celebrate Three Kings Day. While Sokol Milwaukee s traditional Holiday Social saw a break from the traditional December Christmas Party, to this January gathering, it was no less well attended, nor lacked for enthusiasm, for this not as often celebrated Czech Holiday - Tři Králové. Our Sokol Milwaukee Three Kings Day celebration started off with warm words of welcome and thanks for a great 2018, and an even better 2019, from our president Sonia Riecan, followed by a short reading about Christmas/Three Kings Day by Todd Michalek. During this time Todd took a moment to observe the Czech holiday tradition of saying goodbye to deceased members of a family. In the Czech Republic, this somewhat regional tradition involves plates of food being placed on the table for CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE
7 SOKOL/SOKOLICE WINTER departed family members in hopes that the deceased will see, from the heavens, that their departure had not changed the place they hold in the minds and hearts of their relatives. After the names of this past year s three departed Sokol Milwaukee members were called out, Marcella Wenzel. Jerry Novotny and Leroy Bauman, there was a moment of silence for those in attendance to remember other immediate, extended, and Sokol family members who had passed in previous years. 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., Czech Beer will be available for purchase, there will be traditional Czech baked goods to purchase and take home, one can buy a hand blown/hand painted Czech, or Slovak, Christmas ornament or three, and new this year will be: Dinner music by The Milwaukee Accordion Association, the chance to see and tour historic Blessed Sacrament Church, and maybe even a traditional Czech baking demonstration or two. A moment of silence was observed for members Marcella Wenzel, Jerry Novotny and Leroy Bauman. It was then time to eat and enjoy the wonderful accordion music of Dan Grzanna, a regular feature at Polonez s weekly Sunday Buffet. Dan plays all your accordion favorites from around the world with Polish, and even a few Czech, favorites being featured on the 1st and 2nd Sundays of each month. Because it was Three Kings day, a gift provided by Sokol Milwaukee, was given to each attendee. While gold, frankincense and myrrh were not quite on the list, a handsome 0.4l Pilsner Urguell beer glass filled with nuts (walnuts), candy and cookies was provided. While the contents are delicious to eat, the glass also provides a very practical functional application for all those Czech beer loving drinkers who received one. We hope that the day was enjoyed by all those who attended. Should be a time filled with Great Food, Good Friendship, and the chance to see some old friends, and maybe even make some new ones. If February 24 is not yet on your calendar, get it on there today! We would love to have your join us. For additional information, or to make reservations, contact Sonia Riecan ( ) or visit sokolmilwaukee.org on the internet. NAZDAR! New this year 91 ST ANNUAL JATERNICE CZECH DINNER You didn t get a chance to attend the Three Kings Dinner?
