3 3 THE FUTURE OF SOKOL IN MILWAUKEE The Special Membership meeting called by the Executive Board to discuss the future of Sokol in Milwaukee was held on Sunday January 26, About 32 Sokols (approximately one-third of our membership) were in attendance. Mary Cushing, Operations Advisor for the American Sokol Organization made the trip from Chicago to attend the meeting. A frank and open discussion was held after which a vote was taken of those present as to whether they thought Milwaukee Sokol could continue. The vote was 24 to 6 that the organization should continue. The minutes of the meeting are available. Contact Sonka Tostrud if you were not able to attend and would like a copy. Given the vote to continue the organization - it s now up to you - the membership - to decide the future of Sokol. 4 4 Another Successful Jaternice Dinner! BY ANN CRAMER Along with the help of many, many volunteers, each with their own jobs, 443 dinners were served in three separate seatings. Attendance, revenue, and profits were up. Both young and old helped with the work. Way to go! Each person received the meat of their choice, mashed potatoes, dumplings, Czech sauerkraut, gravy, bread, pickled beets and three pieces of bakery. Many compliments were received about the dinners and everyone had a wonderful time. We couldn t do this without all the volunteer help. Thank you! 8 8 FOLK FAIR LEFTOVERS No we re not talking about stale kolache there are some things, actually many things, that with the focus on the Slet, were left unsaid about last November s Folk Fair. First, thanks to all out volunteers for making out Food Booth, Cultural Booth, and Sales Booth a big success. Our gymnasts gave a great performance and the Moja Vlast dancers were once again a Fair highlight. By the way Sokol was recognized for the BEST INTERACTION WITH THE PUBLIC. So give yourselves a big round of applause. The Czech Food Booth at last November s Folk Fair. Moja Vlast Seeking Dancers Moja Vlast Czech-Slovak Dancers are currently seeking new members ages 15 and up for our adult group. No experience is necessary. We practice at Marquette University. The Sokol History Project display that debuted at the Slet was given a prime location at the Folk Fair and appeared to be well received by the fair-goes. For more information, please call (414) or us at mojavlast@aol.com The exhibit traveled to the Kolache Festival in Kewaunee last August where it survived a storm that took the roof off the Ag Heritage Center building and was also seen at the Wisconsin Czechs Maso Pust event at Poland, WI in March. The exhibit will be at the Kewaunee Historical Society in April and at the Hillsboro s Cesky Den and Phillips Czech-Slovak Festival in June. Other venues TBA. Moja Vlast Czech-Slovak Dancers are currently seeking new members ages 15 and up for our adult group. No experience is necessary. We practice at Marquette University. For more information, please call (414) or us at mojavlast@aol.com
9 GYM PROGRAM UPDATE Despite classes cancelled due to extreme cold and illness afflicting our students the gym program continues to roll along. 9 Jennifer Romaine is planning to succeed Jim next fall. Jennifer brings a wealth of experience to the job but if we are to continue to run a good program she will need the support of our whole unit. So if you Making adjustments on the fly has been the rule this year. Instructor Cindy Stevens left our crew to pursue her education at UW - Whitewater. She will missed by her students and we all wish her well in school. have a interest in helping the gym program - perhaps with registration, record keeping or some of the other tasks that do not require gymnastics training - please contact Jim Hron or Gerald Novotny. We were fortunate to enlist another new instructor Jamie Donald who has jumped right into the fray and proved a welcome addition to our group. As most are aware Jim Hron retired from teaching this year. Jim is also retiring from the our gymnastics program. Officially listed as the Director of Women (good luck with that) Jim has really been our gymnastics program for many years now teaching, directing, scheduling, writing our Folk Fair and exhibition programs, etc. etc. etc. With the number of kids interested in our program we will always be looking for instructors. If you or someone you know is interested in teaching please let us know. Our 146th Annual Sokol Gymnastics Exhibition will be held May 20, Please show your support for our gymnastics students and instructors by attending this program.
