1 SEPTEMBER 2018 STATE FRATERNAL DIRECTOR FRANK HORAK CORPUS CHRISTI GETAWAY WEEKEND TEXAS CZECH FESTIVALS GRANDPARENTS DAY 2019 SPJST SCHOLARSHIPS FRATERNAL UPDATE Corpus Christi Summer Getaway Recap The 12th annual Corpus Christi Summer Getaway goes into the history books as another great fraternal event! Thank you to all SPJST members who came out and enjoyed fraternalism at its best. From all the photos on Facebook everyone looked like they had a good time in Corpus Christi. I missed spending time with the members this year. I had family obligations that kept me from helping this year, but will see you in A special thank you to Lodge 79, Corpus Christi members for helping to make this event such a success. Friday evening was our Welcome Aloha Party and everyone enjoyed music, contests, food, and fun. Saturday morning started off early with the horseshoe tournament, sand!1

2 SEPTEMBER 2018 STATE FRATERNAL DIRECTOR FRANK HORAK sculpture contest, sack races, and egg toss contest. It was enjoyed by all. In the afternoon there was a Progressive 42 domino tournament in the Kokomo room and Bunco in the main event area. Saturday evening ended with awards ceremony, King and Queen contest, Chris Rybak performing, and dancing the night away. Hail to King Chris McSwain future member of Lodge 47, Seaton and Queen Janice Victorick of Lodge 9, Snook for your spirited presence on Saturday night. Keep an eye out in the Vestnik for exciting adventures for next year. Fall Fun Days Remember, the meetings are fun events. All business should be limited to emergency issues only. What a great time to meet fellow members in your district, renew old acquaintances and make new ones. Dates for the Fall Fun Days are as follows: District One Sunday, October 21, 2018 hosted by Lodge 17, New Tabor. District Three Sunday, October 28, 2018 hosted by Lodge 6, at Sokol Hall in Dallas. District Four Saturday, October 6, 2018 hosted by Lodge 229, Abilene. District Five To Be Announced check Vestnik for time and place. District Six Sunday, October 14, 2018 hosted by Lodge 30 at Taiton Community Center. District Seven Sunday, October 21, 2018 hosted by Lodge 79, Corpus Christi. Texas Czech Festivals 34th Annual Kolache Festival... Czech Festivals, Texas Style! Come out to Caldwell, Texas on Saturday, September 8 for the Kolache Festival. Opening ceremony starts at 9 a.m. at the South stage located on the corner of Buck and Echols Streets. There will be food, music, State Championship Kolache Bake Show, Kolache Eating Contest!2

For more information you can go to the web address below: Houston Slavic Heritage Festival The festival will start Sunday, September 30, 2018 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Come out and enjoy traditional ethnic food, dancing, music, singing, prizes, local vendors and fun for the whole family. SPJST will have a booth at the festivities. Stop by and come visit us. The festival is held at the Knights of Columbus Hall and Grounds located at 607 East Whitney Street, Houston, Texas There will be more information in the Vestnik in the coming months. Heritage Fest and Muziky Mark your calendars for Heritage Fest and Muziky on October at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, Texas. You ll enjoy many activities for the family State Tournaments All SPJST State Tournaments will be at the Home Office in Temple, Texas Progressive 42 Domino, Tarok, Straight Domino, and 42 Domino to be held at the SPJST Home Office for Since having the tournaments at the Home Office attendance has significantly increased each year. Grandparents Day Grandparents Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day, Sunday, September 9. This is a day to remember those!3

4 SEPTEMBER 2018 STATE FRATERNAL DIRECTOR FRANK HORAK who are special in our daily lives. Everyone is somebody s grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this wonderful day of celebration. The ways to celebrate this holiday are limited only by one s imagination. Try a few of these ideas, and maybe you ll want to start a yearly tradition of your own. Invite grandparents over to play a favorite board game from their youth. Have the whole family cook a few of Grandma s favorite recipes together. Of course, she will enjoy supervising and teaching! Take grandparents to visit the houses where they grew up or some other memorable spots. Create a book or poster titled, Why We Love Grandpa. Have the kids list their many reasons, and add colorful illustrations. Ask the grandparent for a lesson on their favorite hobby. SPJST 2019 Scholarship Applications SPJST 2019 scholarship applications are now available starting September 1, 2018 and must be submitted to the Fraternal Department by February 1, I am providing a flyer with information about the General Scholarship and Leadership Grant applications. If you have a graduating senior in your lodge, please let them know they can apply for the SPJST General Scholarship. Only active youth club seniors can apply for both the SPJST General Scholarship and Leadership Grant. Please see the provided flyer with information about the scholarships or contact Sandra Dubcak at or Sandra at sandrad@spjst.com.
