1 Williams Parkway Happenings April, 2016 Williams Parkway is always a place of opportunities for our students. This month as the weather gets warmer, we have been preparing for some of our outdoor sports and continue helping within our community. Some highlights were; the community clean-up and Terry Fox run supporting cancer research. Education Week Highlights Education Week at Williams Parkway was a huge success. The entire school community came together in various ways to work collaboratively and celebrate each other. We all joined in together on April 19 for an entire community clean-up. Teachers and their classes picked up garbage all around the school yard and community to maintain a clean and healthy environment for all. On April 20, staff and students were encouraged to celebrate each other by coming to school wearing their traditional clothing. Each class recognized Earth Hour by turning off all their lights and devices between 12:35 to1:35 pm. Williams Parkway is

2 very grateful for all of our hard working staff and volunteers. In order to appreciate them we gathered together to have some tea and desserts on April 21. Finally what a great way to end the week with the entire school re-grouping together, including our Principal Mr. Moody supporting a great cause as we participated in our Terry fox Run on April 22. WP Continues to help Organizations Walking for Terry, The Sky is the Limit, and Earth Rangers Ms. Harper continues to train with the cross country team, who had their first opportunity of glory to lead the Terry Fox Run, encouraging the participants to run the route. Together as a school we raised $1100 as we walked 5km around Ching Park. In total to date WP has raised $108,000 supporting advances in cancer research. Run4Hope/The Sky is the Limit WP had 26 runners, including teachers participate. Desmond Fraser came in 10th and Josh Glyn- Williams 11 th. Grade 7 girls relay team came in 4th grade 6 girls & boys came in 5th for relay. Some of our cross-country team members ran against high schools at Professor's Lake on Sunday April 24 th and raised funds for The Sky is the Limit Charity, which provides laptops to youths who need them. Jannat Merchant, one of our grade 6 students raised money for Earth Rangers by selling popcorn during the month of April. All proceeds went to the Organization to help the endangered Wolverines.

3 Day of Pink Williams Parkway staff and students supported putting an end to bullying by coming to school dressed in pink. Thank You Panthers for making our school a safe and bully-free zone. Curriculum Connections Grade 6 students had the opportunity to meet Pilots Ryan and Candace during a recent visit to Williams Parkway. Students learned about flight school, job opportunities, the life of a pilot, and the amazing forces that allow planes to fly. Based on interest, it looks as though many of ours students will be future pilots! Grade 6 Social Studies and Science Grade 7- Pathways to the Future- Thinking about Careers The grade 6 s had the opportunity to go on a self-guided exploration of two very different Urban Communities - Chinatown and Kensington Market. The students explored the past and present history of immigration to Canada. They experienced first-hand different communities in Toronto and their contributions to our society (cultural traditions, religious, celebrations, etc.). Learning about challenges faced by these groups was also a topic of discussion amongst classes. Grade 7 s attended The Pathways to the Future Program at Judith Nyman. It was a great opportunity for students to explore various apprenticeship programs offered at the school such as; chef training, baking auto-mechanics, cosmetology etc.. It was a wonderful opportunity for the high school students and their teachers to take on a leadership role while working with our grade 7 students. Grade 7 classes continue with the Physical Fitness Program, Swim to Survive offered complimentary to our students through Century Gardens Recreational Centre.

4 Grade 8 Math Our grade 8 students and teachers worked along with our North Park teachers and resource staff, engaging students in Math and preparing them for a great transition into high school. Alysha had the great privilege to present her speech in the North Peel regional competition held at McCrimmon Sr. Public School on Wednesday, April 27th at 7pm. We are proud to announce that Alysha did an amazing job and is a finalist placing in the top 3 out of 12 schools and will moving on to the Final Peel Board competition on May 4. Congratulations Alysha! EQAO News The following supplies are needed for EQAO. A large Ziplock bag will be provided by your child s homeroom teacher to hold all the supplies. Patel's class.

5 Sports at WP Our badminton team had a great season. The dedicated group practiced their skills throughout the past few months. The girls had their first tournament on April 20 th and did a great job representing our school. They came in 2 nd place overall in the tournament. Coaches Mrs. Leung and Mr. Laidlaw are very proud of their team. The boys also had a great season and displayed dedication throughout all their practices. Mr. O Reilly, our gym teacher deserves a BIG thank you for taking some of our students to the handball and Tchouk ball tournaments. Both tournaments were highly competitive, we only won 1 game in handball, but we had fun said Rio, one of our handball participants. Mrs. Laroche and Ms. Marchant have started working with all of our grade 6-8 boys and girls interested in soccer. The soccer conditioning clinics are held every Thursday. Students focus on stamina building, through jogging, dribbling drills to build skills and agility training by practicing squats. What a great workout in preparing for the upcoming soccer tryouts. As our ice hockey season comes to an end, Mr. Rutherford, Mr. Hogan, and Mr. Marcovici have started working with the girl s and boy s floor hockey teams. They are getting ready for an upcoming tournament on May 10. Mr. Laidlaw has been training our cricket team for the upcoming tournament May 5. Chess Competition The Chess club members have been using their strategic thinking skills and have had a lot of fun with Mr. Carr playing and learning about various moves. The students had a great experience at the Chess tournament.

6 Music and Drama at WP Rangrej and Kearsten Rankin for 1 st place. Our grade 6, 7, and 8 bands travelled to the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga on Monday April 25 to perform at the Annual Peel Music Festival. Students played Big Mambo and Blue Lake Reflections. They performed extremely well, and were on their best behavior, thus representing WP very well! Students are now preparing for the Spring Concert, which is June 1st at 7:00PM. $2.00 per person. All of Mrs. Brown's music groups are performing - choir, bucket drumming, and all 3 bands. This year has been one of William s Parkway s most successful years ever in Competitive Drama. At the Peel Music festival. Our Panthers captured first place in an inflatable jacket after a cruise ship lurched sideways. These were the directions given by the teacher coordinator Mrs. Harmsworth, based on the 104 th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic on its maiden voyage. Congratulations Paige Coats, Malika Saggoo, Harleen Sangha, Fiza Very exciting news! Mr. Cooke, and the whole cast and crew are preparing for the final production of Once Upon a Midnight coming up next week May 3rd-5th. Break a Leg, Our extraordinarily talented actors. Eco Club Eco club is continuing its last round of litter-less lunches. Our goal is to encourage students to bring their lunches to school in recyclable containers each day. To continue our contributions to minimize waste and pollution in the environment our next whole-school initiative is for students to bring in as many plastic bags as they can. The classes who bring in the most amount of plastic bags will be our next class pizza party winners. Congratulations to all classes, as we continue to work together to help make our environment a better place to live in. Hope 24/7 The Hope 24/7 team members are working together continuing to foster a sense of community within the school. This month the group is working on a script for a play to demonstrate inclusiveness. The Hope 24/7 groups will be attending the 3rd Annual Youth Summit in May. This youth-focused event will host

7 schools from across the Region of Peel. Girls on the GO Girls have been getting on their dancing shoes focusing on healthy fitness by learning some basic linedancing moves-thank You Miss. Lilly for getting us all into the groove. Some really cool activities coming up as the weather warms up. (programmable robots) to our maker-space club. Come out and try coding our little robot. Robotics club continues to run every Thursday at lunch. All students are welcome to come and explore and show off their creativity. IBT Business Fair Science Fair Congratulations to our participants Simran and Ekamjot, who represented our school and received an honorable mention at the Peel Regional Science Fair. Technology News The Williams Parkway IBT students are dedicating their time to creating and operating their businesses. The Grade 6, 7 and 8 students have been working collaboratively to achieve the target goals for their companies they represent. You can purchase many types of merchandise which include; phone cases, vinyl designs, accessories, bracelets, game, shirts, silicone bands, etc. All the profits made will be donated to charity. Library News/Book Fair Exciting news, thank you to Jasdeep, who worked with Mrs. S. Patel demonstrating his basic coding skills with the MBOT robot. We will be now introducing 3 more Mbots Thank you to all the avid readers who supported this year's book fair. We hit our target goal of almost $2000 in sales which means that Scholastic Canada gave us $900 worth of new books for the library.

In May 2002, the Government of Canada signed an official declaration to designate May as Asian Heritage Month. Throughout May, students, staff and parents from across Peel will participate in a number of activities that promote the understanding of the many contributions made by Asian Canadians. Peel schools honour police officers during Police Appreciation Week The Peel District School Board will pay tribute to police officers by holding Police Appreciation Week from May 15 to 21, Peel students and staff will show their appreciation for the tremendous job being done by police to protect schools, homes and communities. Police Appreciation Week coincides with National Police Week. National Police Week pays tribute to the work of police officers across Canada. "The Peel board appreciates the dedication and commitment of police officers who work to keep our schools and communities safe," says Janet McDougald, Peel board chair. "Police Appreciation Week is our way of thanking officers who dedicate themselves to protecting our community. It's also a way to give these officers the special recognition they deserve." During this week, students, staff and parents in schools throughout Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga will honour the work of police officers and thank them for enhancing public safety and security. May 1 to 7 is Emergency Preparedness Week What is Emergency Preparedness Week?

10 The first full week of May of each year is Emergency Preparedness (EP) Week. This year, we will celebrate EP week May 1 to May 7. EP Week is a nation-wide initiative to increase awareness about individual and family preparedness, emphasizing how the public can reduce the risks and consequences of an emergency by being better prepared. During this week, we promote, educate and bring about awareness concerning emergency management planning and personal preparedness. What is the purpose? The purpose of EP Week is to educate students, parents and the community about the importance of being prepared in the case of an emergency. The safety of our students is our top priority Throughout the school year, incidents in our school communities happen. Our staff take precautions to emphasize street-proofing skills with your child. However, we feel that it is important that you take an opportunity to review safety procedures with your child. Peel Police have provided the following safety guidelines if your child encounters a stranger: Tell your children to never go anywhere with a stranger, not to talk to strangers and never take anything from them. You also have to teach them what a "safe stranger" is in case they need help. A safe stranger includes a police officer, a cashier, a fire fighter, etc. Remind your child to never walk alone always walk with a group. Develop a "what if" game for the kids to get them thinking of how they would respond if they felt threatened or afraid. Know who your children play with and where they go. This includes keeping a list of their friend's addresses and phone numbers. Remind your children not to take short cuts through parks, ravines, or other secluded areas. Your child's body is private. Tell your child that no one may touch the area their bathing suit covers. If someone does or tries to touch them, they should advise you immediately. Teach your children to talk to you immediately when someone does anything that makes them feel strange or uncomfortable. Listen when your children are trying to tell you about something that bothers them and provide them with support and understanding. Tips for riding the bus: Take a seat as quickly as possible, put belongings under the seat and stay seated.

11 Never stick anything out of the window, including part of your body. Refrain from eating on the bus. If a choking incident occurs, the driver may not be able to help immediately. Wait until the school bus stops before standing up to exit the vehicle. Tips for exiting the bus: When getting off the bus, take two large steps away from bus. If you have to walk in front of the bus, do so at least three metres (10 giant steps) away from the bus. The driver must be able to see students exiting the bus and will give a signal when it is safe to cross. If more than one student is crossing in front of the bus at the same time, they should cross in single file. Children must never reach for something that is under the bus without the driver s permission. Let the driver know that something is under the bus or wait until the bus moves out of the way. Tips for walking to school: Help your child establish a safe, direct route to school. Avoid potential safety hazards such as train tracks, busy intersections, and reinforce what safety precautions to follow. Stay on sidewalks whenever possible. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road and walk facing traffic. Cross streets at intersections and at crosswalks and learn to look to the left, the right, and the left again before proceeding. Wait until traffic comes to a stop before crossing. Make sure drivers see you before you cross. Don't assume the driver will stop for you. On the road again: How to keep your cyclist safe Here are some tips you can review with your child to ensure bike season gets off to a great start: The right fit children should be able to straddle the bike with both feet on the ground a bike that is too big or too small can be a safety hazard the helmet should fit if it's too loose, it could fall off, if it's too tight, it's uncomfortable Get noticed a young child's bike should be equipped with a bell and reflector older riders should have a light and/or reflectors Follow the rules no riding on busy streets no riding at night stop for all STOP signs Actions that cause injuries driveway ride out not stopping and looking both ways before entering the street

12 running the stop sign turning without warning cycling in the dark following the leader one child goes through a stop sign or misses a parked car but the second cyclist doesn't Keep your child safe around train tracks Trains are often closer and are moving faster than most motorists and pedestrians perceive. That's why all members of a family should be are aware of the importance of rail safety. Safety steps for children Playing on railway tracks and bridges is dangerous. Find safe, supervised and open areas (e.g., neighbourhood parks) in which to have fun. The only way to safely cross a rail track is to use designated railway crossings. If you must cross railway tracks, for example on your way to and from school, stop, look and listen before crossing. It is against the law to trespass on railway property. Safety steps for adults Be prepared to stop at a highway/ railway crossing. Listen for warning bells and whistles of an approaching train. Turn off, or turn down distracting fans, heaters, music/radios. Obey the signals. Never attempt to drive under a gate as it is closing or around a closed gate. If the gate begins to close while you re underneath, keep moving ahead until you clear the crossing. If a police officer or a member of the train crew is directing traffic at the crossing, obey their directions. If your vehicle stalls on the tracks, get out quickly and away from the vehicle and tracks. Move in the direction that the train is approaching from to avoid being hit by debris. Your vehicle will be swept forward by the momentum of the train.
