It will certainly be welcomed by all of us when it finally does arrive. Spring is always a very busy time at Burnhamthorpe. We are planning for both a successful conclusion to this school year and preparing for the coming year at the same time. Throughout the school year, teachers engaged in ongoing professional development both at staff meetings and board level meetings. At our upcoming May 13 PD day we will continue our focus on numeracy by focussing on how we can ensure a smooth transition between grades in this area. There are exciting changes planned for the near future as well. Burnhamthorpe s roof will be completely replaced during the summer months and our school field will be redone as well. A new irrigation system will hopefully eliminate some of our flooding issues and brand new sod and soccer posts will certainly brighten things up. We will be replacing our basketball backboards (which are very tired from extended use) with new ones and also installing two triple hoops which will be mounted at six foot and eight foot heights for our younger students. After the summer work is completed, we will freshen up all the yard games that are painted on the hardtop. Our Kindergarten area will add a triple hoop and a good size sandbox. So many positive additions to our school! As well, if you know that you will be moving during the summer or that your child will not be returning to Burnhamthorpe before the end of the year, please let us know. This helps us with our forward planning. As always, if you have any questions please feel free to call the school and arrange a time to talk.

3 Chess News!! Zugzwang!!! Throughout the day our 9 person squad might have uttered this term as they trapped yet another foe over the chequered terrain. On the 29 th of April representatives from grades 3,4 & 5 stormed the central board office to test their skills against some of the finest chess players the region has to offer. This was our first visit to an annual event and our team did not disappoint. Individual and team points were scored for every victory and we rounded up a hefty total. Great sportsmanship and quick friendships bloomed as pawns and queens were traded at a frantic pace. Thank you to all who participated, you make us proud. Zugzwang - A situation in which the obligation to make a move in one's turn is a serious, often decisive, disadvantage. Extra Curricular Activities at Burnhamthorpe PS encountered their first taste of adversity at the Hershey Centre when they lost their opening game before rebounding with a 20-0 win over Clifton Public School. The team lost their third game, and needing to win their fourth game by a substantial margin, came through in the clutch and snagged the last semifinal spot as the wild card team. Burnhamthorpe was victorious in the semi-final game, earning the right to play on the big court for the final against Credit Valley PS. The game was a back and forth affair, with the lead changing hands several times until Burnhamthorpe managed to take a 5 point lead in the dying minutes that they would not relinquish. Congratulations to all team members and many thanks to all of the parents who made the trip to support the team! We are all very proud of the team's accomplisments! Well done! The following extra curricular activities continue: Spirit Club Grade 5 Ms. David Soccer Club for Grades 3, 4 Mr. Scopis, Mr. Ousalem, Mr. Lawson, Ms. Mattina Computer Reading for Grade 1 and Forest of Reading - Silver Birch Club for Grade 4s and 5s Ms. Forgrave Running Club for Grade 5- Mrs. Ferreira PALS (Playground Activity Leaders in Schools) Program Grade 4 and 5 Ms. Butler, Ms. Gibson, Ms. Sheppard Eco Club Grades 1 to 5- Ms. Devin, Ms. Gibson, Ms. Hutchings, Ms. Butler Creative Movements Club Grades 1 and 2- Ms. Turcotte Origami Club for Grade 2 s Mrs. Lee Floor Hockey Grade 2,3 - Mr. Scopis, Ms. Hansen Basketball News The Burnhamthorpe Bulldogs' Grade 4/5 Co-Ed basketball team wrapped up a very successful season this month by winning the March Madness Basketball Tournament at the Hershey Centre. The team had a remarkable run, beginning with a clean sweep at the Tomken Road Tournament where they won all 5 of their games by double digits. The team

4 Eco Team Trashless Tuesdays Every Tuesday, all students are asked to bring a litterless lunch. Any garbage the students have will be sent home in their lunch boxes. We encourage you to send snacks, lunches, and drinks in reusable containers. Let's all work together to keep our Earth healthy and happy! Burnhamthorpe puts the spotlight on Asian Heritage In December 2001, the Senate adopted a motion proposed by Senator Vivienne Poy to officially designate May as Asian Heritage Month in Canada. In May 2002, the Government of Canada signed an official declaration to designate May as Asian Heritage Month. Throughout May, students, staff and parents from across Peel will participate in a number of activities that promote the understanding of the many contributions made by Asian Canadians. Peel schools honour police officers during Police Appreciation Week The Peel District School Board will pay tribute to police officers by holding Police Appreciation Week from May 15 to 21, Peel students and staff will show their appreciation for the tremendous job being done by police to protect schools, homes and communities. Police Appreciation Week coincides with National Police Week. National Police Week pays tribute to the work of police officers across Canada. "The Peel board appreciates the dedication and commitment of police officers who work to keep our schools and communities safe," says Janet McDougald, Peel board chair. "Police Appreciation Week is our way of thanking officers who dedicate themselves to protecting our community. It's also a way to give these officers the special recognition they deserve." During this week, students, staff and parents in schools throughout Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga will honour the work of police officers and thank them for enhancing public safety and security. School closed for PA Day on May 13, 2016 The next PA Day for the Peel District School Board will be May 13, All Peel board elementary and secondary schools will be closed to students on this day. Multicultural Day Looking ahead at our school wide celebrations, we are excited to announce that we will be hosting a School Diversity Assembly on May 20. Any and all students who are interested in highlighting their culture through traditional clothing, dance, music, stories, etc. are welcome to participate. School Yard rules Parents are asked to please avoid bringing dogs on the yard in the morning. Also, please walk your bike or scooter while you are in the yard to drop off your child to ensure the safety of all. May 1 to 7 is Emergency Preparedness Week What is Emergency Preparedness Week? The first full week of May of each year is Emergency Preparedness (EP) Week. This year, we will celebrate EP week May 1 to May 7. EP Week is a nation-wide initiative to increase awareness about individual and family preparedness, emphasizing how the public can reduce the risks and consequences of an emergency by being better prepared. During this week, we promote, educate and bring about awareness concerning emergency management planning and personal preparedness. What is the purpose? The purpose of EP Week is to educate students, parents and the community about the importance of being prepared in the case of an emergency.

5 The safety of our students is our top priority Throughout the school year, incidents in our school communities happen. Our staff take precautions to emphasize street-proofing skills with your child. However, we feel that it is important that you take an opportunity to review safety procedures with your child. Peel Police have provided the following safety guidelines if your child encounters a stranger: Tell your children to never go anywhere with a stranger, not to talk to strangers and never take anything from them. You also have to teach them what a "safe stranger" is in case they need help. A safe stranger includes a police officer, a cashier, a fire fighter, etc. Remind your child to never walk alone always walk with a group. Develop a "what if" game for the kids to get them thinking of how they would respond if they felt threatened or afraid. Know who your children play with and where they go. This includes keeping a list of their friend's addresses and phone numbers. Remind your children not to take short cuts through parks, ravines, or other secluded areas. Your child's body is private. Tell your child that no one may touch the area their bathing suit covers. If someone does or tries to touch them, they should advise you immediately. Teach your children to talk to you immediately when someone does anything that makes them feel strange or uncomfortable. Listen when your children are trying to tell you about something that bothers them and provide them with support and understanding. Tips for riding the bus: Take a seat as quickly as possible, put belongings under the seat and stay seated. Never stick anything out of the window, including part of your body. Refrain from eating on the bus. If a choking incident occurs, the driver may not be able to help immediately. Wait until the school bus stops before standing up to exit the vehicle. Tips for exiting the bus: When getting off the bus, take two large steps away from bus. If you have to walk in front of the bus, do so at least three metres (10 giant steps) away from the bus. The driver must be able to see students exiting the bus and will give a signal when it is safe to cross. If more than one student is crossing in front of the bus at the same time, they should cross in single file. Children must never reach for something that is under the bus without the driver s permission. Let the driver know that something is under the bus or wait until the bus moves out of the way. Tips for walking to school: Help your child establish a safe, direct route to school. Avoid potential safety hazards such as train tracks, busy intersections, and reinforce what safety precautions to follow. Stay on sidewalks whenever possible. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road and walk facing traffic. Cross streets at intersections and at crosswalks and learn to look to the left, the right, and the left again before proceeding. Wait until traffic comes to a stop before crossing. Make sure drivers see you before you cross. Don't assume the driver will stop for you. On the road again: How to keep your cyclist safe Here are some tips you can review with your child to ensure bike season gets off to a great start: The right fit Get noticed children should be able to straddle the bike with both feet on the ground a bike that is too big or too small can be a safety hazard the helmet should fit if it's too loose, it could fall off, if it's too tight, it's uncomfortable Follow the rules a young child's bike should be equipped with a bell and reflector older riders should have a light and/or reflectors no riding on busy streets no riding at night stop for all STOP signs Actions that cause injuries driveway ride out not stopping and looking both ways before entering the street running the stop sign turning without warning cycling in the dark following the leader one child goes through a stop sign or misses a parked car but the second cyclist doesn't
