2 NCIC Results Special thanks go out to ALL the parents that helped in some fashion at this event, especially to Michelle Fritz for organizing the meal. The other schools were very impressed with our organization, facilities and support. It was an honor for IVC to host the last large NCIC festival. Next year only 5 or 6 of the smaller schools will be involved as the larger schools are leaving the NCIC to form another conference. Foundation Jazz Night Thanks to Becky Pence for organizing the food service at this wonderful evening of Jazz and thanks to the IVC Educational Foundation for once again supporting this event. The music was hot, the crowd large, and our guest soloist, IVC alum, Nathan Heffron was amazing. AND once again thanks for IVC alum, Jim Burnham for attending and making his annual donation of $1000 to our camp scholarship fund in memory of his high school director, Robert Allan. IHSA Organizational Contest Results IVC was represented by SEVEN performance groups at IHSA State Music Contest in Tremont on April 16 th. All the groups performed very well, however the IHSA has changed the scoring system to include 1/10 s of point now making it much more difficult to get a Division I rating. Therefore only the school s top groups, the Wind Ensemble and Chorale, received Superior ratings. 3 Trivia Night Special thanks go out to ALL the parents that helped in some fashion at this event. Trivia Night was a BLAST!!!! OK, just picture this, Matt Chapman in black spandex pants and a white sleeveless tux shirt. That is what you missed if you didn t come to the Trivia night. OR our wonderful Booster President, Leo Vandervlugt, as one of those Wild and Crazy Czech Brothers. A GREAT time was had by all and the only question of the night was WHERE WERE YOU!!!!! Thanks to the Darryl and Beth Durig and Scott Lawson for setting this up. Peoria Area Conductor Visits IVC Maestro Brett Mitchell, currently of Houston, spent an afternoon working with the IVC Wind Ensemble as part of his audition process for the position of Conductor of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra. Very Special thanks to Becky Pence for setting this up and it was an amazing experience for all. The kids had a great time and the Maestro worked his magic making our contest selection sound even more amazing!! Way back in the early 1980 s, the Booster President, Jerry Constantino and I started this newsletter. It started out as a two page dot matrix printed monthly blurb keeping band parents informed of the growing activities of a growing band program. A few years later we added advertisements, graphics and logos. Then came the webpage which just recently took this document to its current electronic stage. I have written quite of few of these notes in 30 years and I am pleased to recall that most were positive, upbeat, highlighting the great accomplishments of all the great people associated with the IVC Band. If someone would have told me 33 years ago when I started out that this career would offer so many amazing and wonderful experiences, incredible performances and amazing people, I would never have believed them. Through the efforts of many, we have taken this band from our Nation s Capitol to Pearl Harbor, Winnipeg, Canada to Orlando and so many numerous spots in between. We have brought home 12 state marching band championships, finished Second nationally one year and at one time was one of the most feared marching bands in the Midwest. Our Jazz Bands set the standard for central Illinois and placed more students in All State Jazz Bands that anyone else in the Peoria area. The band room walls are literally covered with trophies and plaques honoring the accomplishments of our kids. Students from IVC have gone on to perform in collegiate ensembles all over the country, some are now performing professionally, some composing, some teaching, but all have gained a love of music through this program. The IVC Band program has supervised nearly 40 student teachers since 1981 and unfortunately some of those kids are now our main competitors!!!! To be a part of all this has been an amazing experience for me and one that I will treasure forever. When I first hired on at IVC, one former band member told me about the rich heritage of this program starting with Bob Allan back in the 50 s. He impressed upon me that Chillicothe was a Band town and that I had better be ready to maintain the rich traditions. 7 Summitt Photography Bob Summitt, Owner 424 Edward St Henry, IL (309) Pretty scary stuff for a rookie to hear!!! Since that time I have always considered myself a temporary custodian of this program. This is the IVC band, not the Dan Dietrich Band. This is a community program, one that everyone should be very proud. I will always consider the day I was hired as one of the luckiest of my life. Thanks so much to the Board and Administration for making Music an important aspect of student life at IVC. To individually mention and thank all the people who have helped me over the past 30 years would take too long and I would likely leave out someone important. Simply put, you know who you are and thanks for helping make this band great. Thanks for putting in the time selling tickets, citrus, pizzas, bulbs and other fund raising efforts so these kids could have amazing, life changing experiences. Thanks for being chaperones, sewing, building moveable mountains and air cannons, truck driving, and thanks for your kind words of support and guidance through the years. Most of all thank you for allowing me to share in the guidance and upbringing of your children. Getting to know so many great kids over the years has been a true blessing. I do need to acknowledge my three Band Moms and sadly two are no longer with us. Pam, Charity and Gail you will never know how much you have meant to all these kids, this program, and to me. Thanks to all the great bus drivers, custodians, cooks that do so much for our kids. I should also thank my colleagues with the IVC band over the years. Rich Sparks, Jerry Orrison, Rex Benson, Dave Kinney, Sarah Nudd, John Larson, Kim Tegg, and Matt Chapman have all made major contributions to the success of this program in the past 30+ years. We share in its great legacy. Finally, thanks to my lovely wife, Christine and children, Abby and Alex. Being married to another band director certainly has its advantages as we both understand the time and commitment required of our gigs. It s also been great sharing stories about our schools, kids and literally making beautiful music together on many occasions. Some of my proudest moments at IVC were when Abby was in school and it really was ONE OF MY KIDS performing. It is too bad that Alex was not able to attend IVC as I know he would have been able to contribute to the recent legend of football here. I could on forever with the memories and thanks. Thirty years of great times, thirty years of great kids, thirty years of wonderful music and wonder experiences. Best of luck to Matt Chapman as he becomes the next custodian and adds his name to the list of Allan, McCutcheon, Cosmano, York, Sparks, and Dietrich. Mr D. 8 Find the Latest Band Notes From Mr. C Congratulations Dan on an amazing career that has impacted so many people from this town, central Illinois area and our state. It is amazing to me that Mr. D is retiring from IVC. We have been great friends and a wonderful team for the past 20 years. Dan has been an amazing mentor and I have learned a great deal from him. Having him around to answer the tough questions, understanding the "ins" and "outs" of this program and being a giant in the Illinois band world has been the best teaching experience I have ever had over the years. I hope I can live up to the tremendous legacy this program has offered the young men and women of the IVC district. I hope that he can't stay away and comes out to see how things are going because he is always welcome! The IVC students, faculty and band family wish you all the best and want to say congratulations on an amazing run. Mr. C Post N Santa Fe Ave Our mission is to "honor the dead by helping the living" through veterans' service, community service, national security and a strong national defense. Page 8
9 Spring Semester Fundraising Events Fundraising The REALLY good news is that we completed four non-budgeted fund raisers this semester that have all gone pretty well and that have helped make up for losses in first semester. Talent Night, NCIC, Foundation Jazz Night and the Trivia Night combined added about $3200 to our treasury. Thanks again to the parents and students that contributed to these success stories North River Beach Drive ph: fax: Buy Kohl s Gift Cards Kroger Gift Cards This is ongoing and in spite of the company dropping the percentage to 3%, we still have a good amount of families building their band accounts by shopping at Krogers.
