ODCA Warriors Student Athlete Handbook We are glad that you have expressed interest in the ODCA athletic program. This handbook will provide information concerning the exciting interscholastic sports program that we provide. Student athletes participate in athletics voluntarily making a choice of self-discipline and self-denial. We feel it is a valuable experience to discipline one s mind and body for the purpose of competition and to strive for excellence. Lessons learned through athletics can carry over into every area of life. Student athletes and their parents should become acquainted with the specific policies, rules and regulations. Some rules may affect your ability to participate, so please read this handbook carefully and have your parents read it also. You and your parents must sign and return the last page indicating that you have read and understand these policies. The Athletic Department at ODCA is excited to have you as a participant in interscholastic athletics. ODCA has produced many super teams, athletes and most importantly, people. We are happy to have you join our athletic tradition! Sincerely, Dr. David Smith Athletic Director

Philosophy of Coaching for ODCA Middle School The athletic program at ODCA carries with it the distinction of publicly representing the name of this institution before parents and students of our school as well as before many other schools. The observation of the discipline, quality, and character of the coaches and players from Open Door and its athletic program will often be the only point of reference for one's perception of what ODCA represents. This is an awesome responsibility. We are eager that our coaches take on their position with an understanding of the great trust placed into their hands. Coaching middle school students involves some unique understanding and should focus on the appropriate methods for this age group. The following are guidelines for our coaches that will enable them to make the most of the experience for both them and their athletes. Competition: Middle school is a time of transition between the township or YMCA sports and high school athletics. Our philosophy is that we should fit somewhere between the competitive philosophy of what has come before and what will come after. We want to strike a balance between competing and allowing for maximum participation by each athlete. Our recommendation is that a coach should try to give each player time in every game with the understanding that some players will play more due to age, experience and talent. Our schedule always includes several games in which our younger players are prioritized. Motivation: It is important to understand that you should not coach middle school athletes the way you were coached in high school or college. Middle school athletes are very impressionable and very unsure of their own ability of who they are. If one word could define the coaching style for middle school it would be encouragement. They need confidence. They need teaching and development of fundamentals. They need to have organization and discipline. They need to have fun and acquire a love for the sport. General Information: Please remember that the officials for middle school games are not going to be on par with officials for high school or even JV games. You will have to tolerate some poor officiating. Please be respectful in your interaction with officials and have a proper perspective of where you are coaching (it's not the NBA) and why you are coaching. Your conduct in this area will trickle down to both players and parents. Take this opportunity of being a coach to develop your athletes on a spiritual level. Sports can teach us so much about life and how God desires us to live it. You will have a unique chance to impact students in a way that parents and teachers cannot. Please keep the athletic director informed of any problems or situations of concern. Let us know where you need support, equipment or other resources. Have a terrific season!

AGE You must be in 6 th, 7 th or 8 th grade and no older than 15 years of age to participate. ATTENDANCE You cannot participate or compete on a day on which you are absent. School related functions are not considered an absence. On any competition day you must be in attendance for at least four full class periods. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION & CONSENT OF PARENT OR GUARDIAN You are eligible only if you have had a physical examination by a licensed physician or medicine or osteopathic medicine, a certified school nurse, or a physician s assistant before you begin practice for your first sports season of the same athletic year. In all cases, the medical professional must have signed the PIAA Physician s Certificate. This form must also be signed by a parent/guardian. ACADEMIC AND CURRICULAR REQUIREMENTS The administration reserves the right to remove any student from a team for grades below passing and/or lack of academic effort. SPORTS FEE There is a sports fee (refer to tuition schedule) for a child to participate in our sports programs. This fee is per student, per sport season, which must be paid at the start of each sport. BEHAVIOR A student athlete may be ineligible to participate if his or her behavior is unsatisfactory at school and/or during practice and games. Profanity, defiance of coaches or officials, or refusal to cooperate, will not be tolerated at any athletic function, and the student may be removed from the game and/or the team. TRANSPORTATION Student athletes must travel to and from away contests in transportation provided by ODCA. At no time will a student be allowed to travel with anyone other than a parent, teacher or coach. Permission is required prior to the game by the student s parent if he/she is not traveling to or from the competition in the school appointed vehicle. This permission must be given to the coach prior to that sports event. Please be on time when picking up your child from sports practices and games. EQUIPMENT AND UNIFORMS You are responsible for any and all equipment or uniforms issued to you. If any items are not returned, the student s report card will be withheld until items are returned or paid for. If anything is damaged or lost, monetary compensation must be made. No student will be allowed to graduate if uniforms or equipment are not accounted for.

BUILDING USE FOR STUDENTS INVOLVED IN SPORTS When changing for sports events, students should be sure that they have not left any belongings in the bathroom. Cleats are NOT to be worn inside the building. Students must be respectful of the Church administration by being quiet and not hanging out in church administration hallway and/or Narthex. Students are to leave their book bags and all other belongings inside the church glass enclosure in a neat and orderly fashion. They should enter the glass enclosure via the outside glass doors they are NOT permitted enter the glass enclosure from the inside Church Narthex doors. Students should not be entering/exiting the building via the church entrance door (by Mrs. Kreamer s office). They need to enter/exit via the school office door or the gym door if accompanied by a coach with a FOB. Students are to use the gym bathrooms during practice/game events. Students are not permitted to use the phones without prior approval from their coach. Students should not be roaming the school hallways during/after practice. If a student has a need to enter the building, he/she must be accompanied by the coach. GENERAL INFORMATION By choosing to participate in athletics, you have put yourself in the position of a role model among your fellow students. Younger students will look up to you and seek to follow in your footsteps. Take this opportunity to represent Jesus Christ and yourself with dignity and honor. You may refer to the ODCA website for Sports Schedules and Directions. This handbook is intended to inform athletes and parents of state and local regulations governing interscholastic athletics. It is hoped that by being aware of the rules, regulations, and expectations that unfortunate situations can be avoided. We require that both the student athlete and a parent sign below indicating that you have read through this handbook. Submit the signed portion of this page to the Athletic Director at ODCA. All practice times for all sports end at 5:00 p.m. If there is a game, notice will be given of the return time. Take this into consideration when joining a team. It is unfair to leave a coach waiting with a student for excessive time after the pick-up time. If the student athlete is not picked up within 15 minutes of the designated time, he or she could be suspended from future games. When committing to a team, you are committing to a schedule, and we ask that you keep to the predetermined time frames. This handbook is not all-inclusive. Many rules and regulations are not included here and, of course, each coach has the right to make reasonable rules that are more stringent than those listed.

RETURN THIS PORTION TO THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR I have read and do understand the handbook pertaining to Open Door Christian Academy Athletics and agree to abide by it during my involvement in the ODCA athletic program.
