1 December 2001 Next Meeting: December 19, 2001 AMA Chartered Club # 139 Visit: President Wayne Weathers waynerw@aol.com Vice President Dave Santana santanahouse@ .msn.com Secretary Kirk Phaling Treasurer & Membership Ellsworth Crowell Editor Paul Lum ppplum@yahoo.com Field Phone (Editor s Note: President Wayne Weather s column for November is attached below this months newsletter columns.) President s Column Wayne Weathers Hello Fellow Flyers and welcome to December Well it is the end of the year already. Time to get the lights up, presents wrapped, trees trimmed and those airplanes built. It is officially building season. Please bring your work in progress and, of course, any complete work to the December meeting. We would love to see what you ve been doing. After speaking with Gary Ware about the field status, apparently the weather did not cooperate with Mr. Deeney and he was unable to get his crop planted due to too much rain. Gary said that Mr. Deeney would be going back out with the tractor to smooth out the areas at either end of the runway. This should make for less potential damage to airplanes who miss the turf. After the November meeting we do now have an officer for every position on the ballot. Nominations will be opened at the beginning of this upcoming meeting and I encourage anyone interested in a position to ask someone to nominate them and add them to our ballot. We will then close nomination and conduct the election. On the ballot we will also have write in elections for member of the year. If you are unable to make the meeting I would ask that you contact myself or Kirk Phaling who you would like to vote for member of the year. This is an honor to achieve and it deserves the attention of the entire membership. Now, because this is my last letter from the Pres. I would like to sincerely congratulate everyone in this organization for your great support and assistance to me over the last three years as President, and Vice-President. Specifically I would like to thank Dave Santana who has really done so much for the operations of the club and the field. Despite just holding the office of vice-president he has continually volunteered to see that projects get done and get done well. Jeff Obertelli, who I think of as my special teams coordinator, has been tremendous every year at organizing our presence at San Carlos airport, half moon bay Dream Machines show, Moffet Air field, fun fly s, and most recently with this years Annual Banquet Night at Hiller Air Museum. Jeff, you have always been there as a friend and a right hand. Thank You! Thank you also to Ellsworth and Kirk for all you have done to see that the club stays informed and on track with our financial matters. Ellsworth, who has achieved lifetime achievement status with his volunteering of the financial matters of the club has done a great job and Kirk as well by taking notes of every meeting and getting them to the producer of this newsletter, Paul Lum. Thank you too Paul for your volunteering to make the newsletter happen each month despite the missed publishing deadlines by me. I know all agree that the newsletter has never looked better. I would also like to extend a big thanks to those that have taken such great care of our field. Harry Smith and Gary Ware, i.e. Harry & Gary have been our field guru s for more than a couple of years and have done a fantastic job. After last years reconstruction and continued maintenance the field has never looked and held up so well to the elements. Thank you for all your hard work and continuous vigilance. 1
2 Since I joined this club in late 1994 I have held 2 different volunteer positions, and three years as an officer. There is no illusion that a break is welcomed; however, I have sincerely enjoyed being a part of the leadership in this organization every step of the way. To the new officers and board members, I look forward to continuing to assist with the events and the projects that have helped our club grow and become much more known in the community. We are in great financial shape and our field is better than ever. As in every organization though, the future holds many challenges for us to embrace and prepare for. Universal declining membership in model aviation is affecting us as well as every other club in our region. Flying sites are rapidly becoming fewer and farther between. Technology and marketing combined are tending towards more pre-built airplanes and sophisticated equipment that is changing the demographics of the modern model aviator. These are just a few of the challenges that will have to be addressed in the near future. Thank you everyone again for your great support. Have a very merry Christmas and a special holiday season with your families. This year, more than ever, we should place a special emphasis on letting those close to us know how much we love them and treasure their friendship. With Warmest Regards, Holiday Wishes, and Thanks, Wayne Minutes - November 21, 2001 Kirk Phaling 'Twas the day before Thanksgiving and all through the Millbrae Library not a soul informed PCC that the whole place would be locked up at 5:30 P.M. The Secretary (and coffee builder) got to the library at 5:45 P.M. to get the coffee started and to start setting up chairs and tables. Found the place dark and all doors locked. Went to the police station but no one there could help. Called Ellsworth. He was just leaving. When he got to the lib we discussed the problem. In the meantime others were arriving. Ells went to the Rec center to see if we could use it. He found that it was going to close at 8:30 but would stay open for us if we didn't stay too long after that. So a sign was made up directing members to the Rec center. By this time it was about 7:20. The coffee maker decided to forego making coffee because it takes about 30 to 40 minutes for it to brew. Donuts were available so all was not lost. The November meeting was called to order at 7:54 P.M. by Pres. Wayne Weathers. The attendance was low - probably due to being the day before a holiday. There were 4 2 guests present. All stated that they intend to join PCC. Great. The minutes of the October meeting were approved as published in the newsletter. Alonzo Richardson presented PCC with a very nice small P.A. system to be used at meetings (and other occasions) to allow members in the back of the meeting room to hear what the officers or guest speakers are saying. Works great. Thank you, Alonzo. Kirk Phaling will be the custodian of the unit. Ray Squires displayed the raffle prizes - an Irvine.53 ABC and a mini cutting saw. COMMITTEE REPORTS: TREASURER : The state of the PCC treasury continues to be on solid ground - as reported by Ellsworth Crowell. FIELD: Harry Smith reported that the field is in good shape. Gary Ware said that the phone line will soon have to be reditched because the landowner will be planting a crop. A lot of the area has been plowed. DO NOT DRIVE IN THE PLOWED AREAS. THE GROUND IS VERY SOFT AND A VEHICLE WILL GET STUCK. MEMBERSHIP: Albert Margolis (father) and Benjamin (son), 13, were voted in as Full and Junior members respectively. Congrats to both. OLD BUSINESS: Jeff Obertelli discussed the annual PCC banquet to be held Jan.19,2002 at the Hiller Museum. He is now taking money for the event. Call him at to reserve your spot or see him at the next meeting. The cost is $50 per person and includes a tour of the museum, a great buffet dinner, and a guest speaker -Eddie Andreini (the great aerobatic pilot from HMB). It will be at fine evening. NEW BUSINESS: Nominations for 2002 officers were made. Alonzo Richardson nominated Harry Smith for Pres., Charlie Wajdak for V.P., Ellsworth Crowell for Treas., and Kirk Phaling for Sec. Ray Squires, Jake Chichilitti, and Wally Cain were nominated for Board members. Two will be elected. Paul Lum has graciously consented to continue his excellent work as newsletter EDITOR. The election will be held at the Dec. meeting. Additional members can be nominated at the Dec. meeting before the election. John Bassetto will take over as RaffleMaster and Dennis Lowery will be Donut Master. That leaves someone needed to be Coffee Master. Who will step forward?? D.O.M.: John Bassetto automatically was awarded this again for not remembring to bring the trophy to the meeting.
3 S.A.D.: Grant Sawai received this award because the wing of his Hangar 9 Pizzaz ARF folded, destroying the plane. SHOW & TELL: Dennis Lowery had a Sig Somethin' Extra with an Irvine.53 for power-nicely covered in maroon and yellow Monokote. Dennis said it was easy to build. Had not flown as if meeting day. Charlie Wajdak had a pylon racer of his own design which he had built some time ago and forget about until recently. He is using an Irvine pylon motor in it and has installed a mechanical mixer for the elevons. Looked great with its white and orange covering. And the ubiquitous "KAY" on the wing. Harry Smith showed his still in the box Delta Vortex ARF-designed by Bruce Tharpe and distributed by Cermark. He will power it with a Saito.91 4 stroke. It is a very complete kit and looks neat. Ken Martinez showed the Shoestring which someone had given him needing repairs. He had completed reworking it and it has flown. Lands fast. Great looking plane. The meeting adjourned at 9:00 P.M. and was followed by the Raffle. Neil Leopold won the Irvine.53 and Wayne Weathers got the saw. Kirk Treasurer s Column Ellsworth Crowell Fellow Members, when you receive your 2002 A.M.A. membership card, mail me a copy along with your annual P.C.C. dues payment check of $65.00, made out to P.C.C. Mail to: MR. ELLSWORTH CROWELL 424 OXFORD WAY BELMONT, CA As a reminder to late paying members, on January, the dues go up to $ On February 1, the dues go up to $ Don t get caught paying a penalty. PAY NOW!! Please attach your 2002 year bar to your name badge and wear it at the field. As of January 1, we want to know the members who have their A.M.A. and have paid their 2002 dues. Don t forget the P.C.C. annual banquet on January 19, 2000 at the Hiller Aviation Museum. Many prizes and good times to be had. Be there, don t be a square. I attended the I.M.A.A. meeting on Nov. 28. One piece of news is the Castle fly In is on for So get ready. The A.M.A. and I.M.A.A. has sponsored jointly the first safety video to be produced for model aviation. I have borrowed a copy to be shown at the local club meetings. Briefly, it explains the I.M.A.A. Safety Code and the Safety Review Form, how to inspect your plane, how to lay out the flying site, recommended equipment and practices, additional safety items you can use. This video is hosted by Nick Ziroli and lasts about 30 minutes. Thank you! Ellsworth Editor s Column Paul Lum Well, guess you ve read that Grant s brand new Hangar 9 Pizzaz crashed. Darrow Watt was the pilot. He had just completed a series of roll during a dive from a fairly good height. He pulled up to level the plane out and the wing snapped. What a shame. Grant s Hangar 9, 540 Edge did the same thing the wings snapped. Horizon Hobbies eventually gave him a new 540 Edge and a brand new Saito 180. The last time I spoke with Grant, he said that Horizon was going to send him a new Pizzaz with a stronger wing and they were going to repair the damaged engine. Between the 540 Edge and the Pizzaz crashes, Dishon was flying Grant s brand new Hangar 9 Ultra Stick 40, trying to get the plane to do a snap roll. I suggested to Dishon that he try doing a snap roll at a lower speed. He tried it at a very low speed. The metal motor mount broke, leaving the engine dangling from the throttle cable. Cool Dishon landed the crippled air plane without any further damage. All of this suggests that when you buy an ARF or an ARC that you check out the joints and use good common sense. Add reinforcements where needed. Sometimes Gregg might run into difficulties or is not able to post our newsletters on our website. If that should happen, I will try to post the newsletter on a website I created for PCC. The address is Paul Newsletter Submission Deadline: Third Tuesday Before The Next Meeting! 4 19 P.C.C. Club Meeting 2002 January 16 P.C.C. Club Meeting 19 P.C.C. Annual Club Banquet President s Column (November 2001) Wayne Weathers Hello Fellow PCC rs and welcome to the November Edition. Yes it is that time again Turkey, Stuffing, a little rain starting to fall, DARK at 5:00, That s right folks.. Its BUILDING SEASON!!!! Time to get those kits down that you bought at the auctions and said you have done just in time for spring. Covered or not we would love to see your work in progress at the next meeting. Of course we would also like to see your completed work too. Thanks to everyone who participated in the auction last month. We had a lot of planes, kits, engines, etc and some of it even went home with new owners. All in all we had good attendance and those who came seemed to enjoy it. Our meeting this month falls on a tough day. The night before Thanksgiving. I encourage all to attend because this is the meeting where officers are nominated for the next year. I am planning to work with Paul Lum and Greg Heumann to expand our voting in December with ballots to members who do not attend the meetings and see what we can do through the internet as well. I am sure the punched ballot cards will be discussed as well as that hanging Chad thing we went through last year. We also have to discuss the field situation etc. so Please, If you can attend, do. That s all for now. Thanks to everyone who has worked so hard to make this club run so smooth this year. Until I see you at the meeting, remember to keep your gear down and your tails up. Happy Holidays, Wayne For a November, there seems to be a lot going on. Jeff, Dave, any myself have been working hard on he banquet details and we have now finally completed all of the pieces. Our Banquet will be on January 19, 2002 at Hiller Air Museum in San Carlos. The evening will start at 6:30 with a cocktail reception inside the museum. We are providing an open bar followed by a gourmet catered dinner by Danish Catering of Burlingame including dessert and coffee or Tea. We will have an abbreviated awards presentation for our annual recognition followed by a presentation by Mr. Eddie Andreini. It will truly be a night to remember for PCC Members and guests. The evening is open to anyone to attend. We want you to be free to invite your friends interested in aviation as well to enjoy the night together. TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW!! Please contact Jeff Obertelli to purchase your tickets to this years event. Seating will be limited to the first 150 tickets sold. Purchase price is $50.00 each. Many have been sold already and presentations to other local clubs have been made. Contact Jeff now to reserve your seat for AN EVENING AT HILLER AIR MUSEUM WITH PCC. For more info stay tuned to our website at fly-pcc.org. Other news in the making, I have it on good authority from several sources that the field is being prepared for planting of crops by Mr. Deeney. Apparently this sudden tractor work caught us off guard but no damage to the phone lines is apparent. More to follow as the construction progresses. 6 Look at the airplanes. It was crowded. We had maximum allowable airplanes in the air. What s the maximum anyway? Look at that sky! And the flag! Charlie and Harry watching me take their picture. Gary lecturing Dave Weldon for smiling while he was working. Taku, a new member, getting ready for a training session with Paul. 6 Darrow trying to get the wheel barrel to do a torque roll.
7 Grant figuring out if he can make a barbeque in the new ditch. This strange thing is Model Tech s Magic. It s a 3D flier. Look at the flag. Straight down. Another beautiful day. Review some of our safety rules Whoa! Look what Carlos did!! He put the pants on Grant s Aresti backwards. He said it flies better. He needs sleep. 1. Safety of persons shall be of the utmost concern during any flying activity. 2. No high speed passes over the runway. 3. If there are three or more flyers present, all transmitters are to be placed in the transmitter impound box. Check that your transmitter is "OFF" before placing it in the impound box. 4. Transmitters must have appropriate channel numbers attached as required by AMA. 5. A transmitter is not to be turned on, with or without an antenna, for any reason unless the appropriate frequency clip pin from the frequency clip board is attached to the transmitter. A slave transmitter hooked to a master transmitter does not require a frequency pin provided that the slave transmitter is not turned on. 6. Engines are to be started in the HOT pit area only. Care should be taken to insure that prop wash does not interfere with flyers or other aircraft. Prolonged running of engine should be done at the east end of the walkway leading to the pit area. (See Map of Flying Site) 7. After starting your engine, move your support equipment next to the fence so that it is out of the way of other flyers. 8. Taxing within the pit area is strictly prohibited. 9. Aircraft with their engine running must be in firm control of the pilot. It must be held by hand or restrained by an aircraft holder provided. Radio interference may cause an unsecured aircraft to suddenly throttle up resulting in a dangerous situation. 10. "Dead stick" aircraft have the right of way. Yield to them. 11.Landing aircraft have priority! Before taxing onto the runway from the taxiway, call "Coming Out" to alert the other pilots flying their aircraft that you are about to taxi onto the runway. Only after having received an o.k. from the other pilots and making sure that no one is landing, should you enter onto the runway. In acknowledging the "Coming Out" call, the pilots flying their aircraft shall shout "O.K." loud enough to be heard and nod their head to give a physical sign that they have heard the announcement. 12. Takeoffs are to be made on the runway and into the wind as possible. 13. After takeoff, pilots shall position themselves within the pilots station, situating themselves at an empty flight station. 14. When landing, call out "Landing" to alert other flyers of your intentions. When your aircraft has cleared the runway, call out "Runway Clear", letting other pilots know it is safe for them to land their aircraft. Richard with a friend, Red(?). Red flies gliders so Richard had to get the buddy box for him to fly his plane. 7
