Our website address: From the Editor: F or all you hardy Stetsons who ventured out on New Year s morning for the First Flight event, it was great to see you! Well Done all for getting out there! I m not sure what the record is, but 21 brave souls was a good turnout. Thanks Dan for the fire and the coffee. We saw the first flight (Powered) from Mike Amodeo, the first electric flights (tie) by Dave Percy and Pierre Menard, the first dead-stick by yours truly and the first *@!%&# moment from Rene Lepage. RIP the Orville! We also saw Goose destroy a lot of evidence in the fire barrel and even saw a few of his sacrifices spirited away to back seats and trunks of others. One man s trash is another man s treasure? On THAT subject folks, don t forget our January Flea Market at the regular meeting on Jan 31. Bring out the stuff you want to sell and help others get what they want. Make sure you put a price and name on everything so people can shop. Arrive early (before 7PM) and grab some table space for your items. Bring building materials, hardware, motors and radio equipment, field equipment, and of course Airplanes! Someone is looking for the stuff you are no longer using! I recall a couple of years ago I scored several part rolls of monokote in a variety of colors...it s come in very handy ever since! That was a real find for me! I hope you will be as lucky. I would like to keep the photo section full every month so please forward some of your favorites from this year to me. JPEG formats work well. This is YOUR newsletter, so keep the articles, information, pictures and suggestions coming every month. Make sure we include what YOU want to see in it. We are fortunate to have the road and parking lot passable with thanks to Marcel Pronovost. A couple of cautions are in order: Please remember to lock the gate! ROADS: Be cautious on the road in as those ditches are steep and you will be truly stuck if FIRE BARREL and wood are there and for your use. Like any campfire, it should be extinguished before you leave. There is a shortage of kindling so if you are throwing out scraps of wood, bring them along and put them under the wood tarp. RUNWAY: At this time the runway is in really good shape for ski-equipped aircraft. It is important to NOT stomp all over the runway, as this makes big holes and mounds in the surface which is fatal for ski takeoffs and landings! Cell Phones are a great idea when out there in winter If you need assistance. Have fun flying this winter! It sure beats NOT flying!

Get us your correct address and we ll get you on the list! Meetings: The Stetson Flyers meet at 7:30 on the last Tuesday of each month, except for December, June, July or August. The meetings are held at the Canada Aviation Museum in the Bush Theatre. Bring and Brag: Each meeting we encourage members and guests to bring something of interest to show to the group. It could be a new plane, a build in progress, or a demo of a technique. Where there are three or more items brought to the meeting we will try and have a prize draw. Items for sale are welcome but are not eligible for the Bring and Brag prize draw. Use the back door to the museum! To get to the back door follow the road around to the extreme left side of the museum. Pass through the gate in the perimeter fence and proceed to the back door. Want to propose something? Members in good standing can bring motions from the floor at any regular meeting. The motion will need to be seconded, then discussed and voted on by the members present. Sometimes the outcome is that the motion is tabled so more information, implications, etc. can be gathered and presented. You can help speed up the process by giving the executive a heads up by sending an to contact@stetsonflyers.com, ideally before the executive meeting which happens the Tuesday before a regular meeting. 3 Call for Volunteers: Your flying buddies need your help! As everyone knows, many hands make light work. Please step forward and volunteer to assist at the events noted above. Ed Rae, IMAC and IMAA Giant Scale are our three big events this year, and each could use many helpers. Canteen help, scribes at the IMAC contest, registration table, event specific and general assistance plus cleanup are all required on the day of the event. You CAN enter the events and also assist with some of the tasks too! It s allowed and appreciated. Send us an if there is a job you are willing to take on. It s never too early! There is no better way to take part in a club event than to help out. You are a part of the action!

4 AEROBATICS CORNER: by Gary R. We have a growing number of names on the interest list folks! I'm really looking forward to getting airborne this spring with everyone. In the meantime, several of you have been asking about which aircraft to use, and how much engine to mount, etc. I can t pretend to be the know-it-all expert here, but in lots of flying and discussions with everyone last year, a few things stand out: 1. Symmetrical and tapered flat wings will work best. This doesn t mean you HAVE to go straight into a full-on Scale aerobatic EDGE, EXTRA, YAK, SUKHOI, KATANA, CAP, or similar. If you are just graduating from a high wing trainer as your first aircraft, you will do very nicely with any of several sport aerobatic kites as a second aircraft. Examples include the PULSE series, ESCAPADES, SUPER SPORTSTERS, EASY SPORT, ULTRA STICKS and TWISTS, etc. These have square wings, making them a bit more forgiving. 2. If you want to get straight into it, do select a known good flyer. This might be a good time to look for aircraft that have been developed by some of the recognized Masters in our sport...guys like Mike McConville, QuiQue Somenzini, and others. Chances are you will get a great flyer with little surprises. Ask around and seek advice. Check the internet buzz as well. 3. Engine sizes: DO put on the largest size that is recommended, or if you are brave, a little larger. Aerobatic moves do require a good power to weight ratio, which favors the higher powered engines. Big engines can mean big stresses, so be diligent in your build, reinforcing and re-gluing as you see fit. If you need advice, talk to others. Also keep things as light as possible. Lighter flies better. Strong and Light is the goal. 4. Aircraft size: Most of the sport aerobatic ARFs are in the glow engine size range. If you are looking for your second aircraft, start in this size range. The Scale Aerobatics ARFS also start at 50 size and get larger, into the gasser sizes at about 70 inch wingspan and up. Engine prices are about equal between a 30cc Gas and a 1.20 Glow, which is about the size where the gas engine takes over. Glow engines get quite expensive to run in larger sizes, at $28 a gallon for 15% nitro vs. $5 a gallon for pump gas and a bit of good oil. Too bad the gassers don t smell as nice! 5. Radios: One radio feature you need is dual rate with exponential. This will allow a smoother feeling model in the air. Number of channels is 6 minimum, but if you are making a new radio purchase, go 8 or more. Room for future! Last Meeting Minutes: 29 November 2011 The meeting was opened at 7:30 with a motion by Bob Butterworth, seconded by Claude Dostaler. There were 43 present at the meeting. Guests were greeted including Rod Elliot. A motion to accept the minutes as published was made by Gerry Nadon, seconded by Scott Clarke. Motion Carried. The current 2011 membership is 142 members. Webmaster nothing to report. Newsletter nothing to report. CFI nothing to report. Events the list of events were reviewed. It was noted at the Zone Director/ Club Presidents meeting that the Giant Scale event was moved to September 15 and 16 to avoid some other events on the 8 and 9 of September. Scott Clarke and others insisted that the September 8 and 9 dates be kept as they had already been distributed to some other organizations, plus the electric events that are on the same date are not likely to cause a drop in attendance since they are for the most part different types modeling. Gary Robertson also provided a recap of what was discussed at the Zone Director/ Club Presidents meeting. Old Business Daniel Marcotte reported that Bill C-4 does not apply to the Stetson Flyers because we are incorporated in Ontario. If we were incorporated at the Federal level, C-4 would apply. Financial statements. Daniel Marcotte reviewed the 2011 financial statement actual vs. budgeted. A motion to accept the 2011 financial statements was made by Claude Messier, seconded by Hal MacDonald. Motion carried. Note that the 2011 budgeted, 2011 actual and 2012 proposed budgets were all published in the previous newsletter. The 2012 budget was presented and discussed. A motion to accept the budget proposal without amendments was made by Scott Clarke, seconded by Gerry Nadon. Motion carried. A motion was made by Simon Nadler, seconded by John Jackson, to give complementary memberships to the Instructors who attended 75% or more of the student training nights. Motion carried. Safety Hal MacDonald stressed the need for qualified spotters to keep everyone at the field safe. The meeting was closed by a motion from Gerry Nadon.
