MARIETTA MIDDLE SCHOOL Indian information Volume 2, Issue 2 September MMS Spotlight teacher Each newsletter we will be doing a spotlight Teacher of the Month. This month s teacher spotlight is Mrs. Stokes. She teachers 6th grade language and part of 7th grade language. She is also the MJH cheer coach. I asked her some questions to learn a little bit more about her. Here s what she had to say. Why did you become a teacher? I became a teacher so I could work with kids and make a difference in their lives. Do you like Marietta? I am loving Marietta. I am back HOME! tutoring Do you take selfies? No, I don t take selfies. I try, but am not good at it. I think my arms are too short. How many kids do you have? I have one child, and her name is Jaxee. She is the true definition of a threenager. Do you have any pets? I do have pets, in fact I have 15! 3 dogs (Buddy, Jewel, and Frozen), 2 cats, 6 chickens, and 4 mules. What was your favorite subject in school? In school, I liked math the best. What is your favorite sports team? My favorite sports team is the OU Women s Basketball Team. I love watching Coach Coale coach! What is your favorite color? My favorite color is purple. I liked interviewing her. She is very positive and funny! Article by Heaven Sustaire Photo submitted by C. O Connor Words to live by... In order to succeed, we must first believe that we can. - Nikos Kazantzakis Marietta Middle School provides tutoring after school on Monday-Thursday from 3:00-4:00. On Monday and Wednesday, it is held in Ms. Corbin s room. While on Tuesday and Thursday, Mrs. Jefferson will host tutoring. I asked Ms. Corbin and Mrs. Jefferson some questions about why tutoring is important. It helps so that you don t get behind, and it helps when you don t understand, Ms. Corbin said. Mrs. Jefferson thinks tutoring is beneficial for student success because, I can help people on a one-on-one basis. Article by Kenia Pichardo
P A G E 2 I N D I A N I N F O R M A T I O N Get ting to know Mrs. O Conno r This month s support staff spotlight is Mrs. O Connor! I don t understand why she is considered support staff what she does is phenomenal! She should really be called, Super Staff! Next time you see her, please say thank you, because she is such an important part of this school. Without her, this school would be chaotic and who knows how stressful helping Mrs. Naylor is, along with taking care of us all! Where did you go to school at? I went to high school in Stratford, Ok and graduated from college at Oklahoma State University. If you could live anywhere, where would you and why? Until my son graduates from high school, I want to live in Marietta, OK, because Marietta has a good school that is not too small and not too big. After he graduates, I would love to live in Stillwater, OK. That is where my husband and I both went to college and we always enjoyed living in Stillwater. What is the most stressful thing about being a secretary? Making sure students get phone messages from their parents about change in how they go home. We always want our students to know where, and with who, so they are going so they are always safe. What is your favorite football team? I m not a big football fan, but I always cheer for OSU and Big 12 teams. If you were the richest person alive, what would you do with the money? I would set up college funds for my kids and any kids they may have. Then I would travel. Where is your favorite place to shop? (This one is just for fun) I like to shop at the Allen Outlet Mall, because they have a large selection of stores and lots of good bargains. For the hard work and effort you put into this school, I want to give a great thanks to Mrs. O Connor! Article by Amelia Lawson Homecoming 2015 Homecoming is a very fun school tradition where throughout the week there are dress up days. At the end of the week there is a football game. This year s dress up days were: Monday Oklahoma State vs. Oklahoma University Tuesday Superheroes vs. Villians Wednesday Zookeeper vs. Animal Thursday BBQ Dad vs. Soccer Mom Friday Cheerleader vs. Football player We had a really good turnout. A lot of students and teachers dressed up. Friday, after school on the courthouse lawn, there was a parade and a pep rally to get pumped for the game. The game was a really good one. The football boys played their hearts out. We lost, but the crowd made it feel like we had won. There was so much positivity in the stands. The cheerleaders did a great job with keeping the crowd motivated for the boys. I personally feel there was so much school pride. If you went, you probably feel the same. Article by Heaven Sustaire Digital copy of this month s newsletter is available at
P A G E 3 Movie review McFarland, USA I asked Kile Ing what his favorite movie was. He said McFarland, USA. He said his favorite part in the movie was when Danny Diaz wins state for the team. My favorite part in the movie was when Danny Diaz wins state for the team. - Kyle I. McFarland, USA tells a story of a coach who turns a bunch of misfits into a team of champions. The boys live in a poor agricultural town in California s central valley. It takes place in Article by Aaliyah Garcia (Summery courtesy of google.com) Song review thinking out loud For song review, I chose Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran. This is probably my favorite song ever. It s such a sweet song and I love listening to it. I m personally a pretty big fan of Photo courtesy of youtube.com Ed Sheeran. I think this was another amazing song with lines like, Your soul will never grow old, it s ever green which is my favorite lyrics from the song. If you re ever bored, go listen to it! Article by Kylie Slawson Bible Study Every Wednesday, in Mrs. Stoke s room, we have a student led bible study. You can go to the lunchroom and ask for a lunch to go. Try to bring your bible if you can. If you don t have a bible, or forget your bible, it s okay. It s not a big deal! Students will host a bible study. They will talk about the lesson, then we will pray. If we have time left over, we will talk about what we learned from the bible study lesson. Anyone can come! We hope to see you there! Article by River Pierce I got asked to write a thank you letter. I really thought about who should I write this to. I want to thank all of our lunch ladies, janitors, staff/teachers, volunteers, and librarians. I feel it is important to recognize what they do for our school. I want to thank Coach/Ms. Tucker for being a great coach. I have already learned a lot, and I feel that it is going to be a great season. She is very positive, and sets very high goals for us. She expects us to do the same. I am very excited for the season and cannot wait to play, and Coach Tucker cannot wait to coach our games. -Heaven Sustaire

Article by Amelia Lawson Thank you Coach Tucker, Coach Messer, Coach Jessie, Ms. Heil and Ms. Salas for going on our field trip to Murray State College. All of us 7th graders had a good time! We appreciate all of your time and patience. We all had a fun time! Sincerely, The 7th Grade Class
Coach Messer 7th grade MSC in the Nursing Department Mrs. Starsick Mrs. Stokes 7th grade MSC in the Art Department P A G E 5 7th grade college trip msc GEAR UP allows the middle school to take trips for college. The 7th grade gets to visit Murray State College in Tishomingo. It helps them decide what they want to do when they grow up. MSC staff gives them a tour to help them decide if they want to go there or go somewhere else. If they did decide to go to Murray State College, the tour would help them learn the subject of what they want to do. Some of the kids favorite part was the Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) department. Others liked the food, music, or art best. Murray State College was very informational to all of us 7th graders. They allowed us to tour the dorms, classes, departments, and eat lunch in the college cafeteria. Thank your teachers and everyone who helped for us to get there. Article by Monica Flores GEAR UP WEEK GEAR UP week was to help remind us what all GEAR UP provides for us. For example, allowing our middle school and high school students visit college campuses and help us prepare for college. We did many things throughout the week for this. ~Monday was the door decorating contest. Homeroom classes were to decorate their doors with their dreams, hopes, and goals. Several homerooms participated. *Coach Tucker s was the rocket theme Shoot yourself to your dreams (They were also the winners!) *Coach Messer Their theme was basketball hoops. Also shoot yourself to your dreams. (They received second place.) ~Tuesday was GEAR UP College Gear Day! Students were to wear a shirt of their favorite college. Teachers were to wear shirts from the college that they attended. ~Wednesday was College Trivia. Students Coach Tucker were handed out trivia sheets during homeroom. The one with the most right answers won a GEAR UP banner. The winners were Ashleigh Wood & Isabella Spiers. ~Thursday was Thank You Congress. WE would spread the word about GEAR UP to our US Senators and representatives. We were to write a short thank you note on a poster (Ms. Heil provided that) and she would give it to the Congressmen. ~Friday we all wrote our dreams, goals, or our future careers on a balloon. Rodney s Flower Shop provided the balloons. During homeroom we released the balloons and watched as they floated away. The balloons probably hit a power line and fell somewhere. Either way someone will see it! Article by Monica Flores Ms. Corbin MMS Balloon Release for GEAR UP week. GEAR UP helps students reach their sky-

P A G E 7 ADVICE COLUMN Together We Achieve Have you ever needed advice, but you were too scared to ask? You thought you would get made fun of for wanting help, or that no one would understand? Now you can ask questions, get advice, and no one will know it s you! In the library, there will be a box with slips of paper beside it. You can write anonymous questions and get advice/answers from your peers in the next newspaper. Advice suggestions Q: What do you do when your girlfriend says she loves you, but you don t love her back? Suggestion: It s probably not going to go far if you guys feel different about each other. Don t lead her on pretending you do just explain her your feelings. Suggestion: Don t make things worse by saying, I love you back. You don t have to necessarily love the person even if you re dating. Do us middle schoolers even know what love is anyway? Don t get her hopes up and rise her expectations by saying it back also. Q: When you have a boyfriend, and that boy is friends with someone you like and your boyfriend knows you like the friend what do you do? Suggestion: Go for whoever you liked second, because they have something the first person doesn t have. Suggestion: If your boyfriend is okay, and he knows you like him then that s okay. If you have more and/or stronger feelings for that other person, then why are you still even with that other one. Don t build up tension in the relationship with the current one if the feelings aren t true. Talk to him about it. Q: How do I get money? Suggestion: Get creative. You could make money in so many different ways. Earning an allowance is a good one that could also lead to you understanding or having more respect for your parents and house. You can: mow lawns, walk dogs, wash cars, bake sale, lemonade stand, or anything that your talent revolves around. Use what you are good at. Suggestion: Ask your parent(s) if you can get money for doing chores. Try making something unique and sell it. Q: How do you tell your friends an important secret about yourself? Suggestion: Try to work your way into it first. Make sure that there are no distrac- tions or possible interruptions. That s the only way you prep. If they re your friends, they ll accept what you have to say. Suggestion: The secret depends. Be careful who you tell. Who you think can really keep a secret might surprise you. I wouldn t tell very many people. Make sure you only tell the ones you trust 100%. If you re hesitant then be careful. If they are true friends, then they will support you no matter what.
