By Roxane Mole In this school there are so many different and unique enrichments to choose from to take part in after school! Enrichment sessions are great to get involved in for a number of reasons and here are my two favourites: A great way to make some new friends At some point when we are new to a school we don't have many people to talk to, and almost no friends, but enrichments might just be the solution. As soon as you start a new enrichment there are people who Archery is Head of Enrichment Mr Molloy s favourite after-school club will work with you and help you even if they are in different year groups! Everyone can make new friends at Stockport Academy and I have to say enrichments really help with the first steps. Increase your health and team work skills When you are in PE or any other enrichment you have to work together or do a sport, by doing this the sports will increase your health so you are healthier, and with the team work you'll be able to use that in the future for your job or classwork! Mr Enrichment Speaking exclusively to SPArk, Head of Enrichment at Stockport Academy, Mr Molloy, said: My favourite enrichment is archery, because it is great for people who want to try something new. The most popular enrichment, however, is Girls Active, with over 300 students taking part in this activity since it started. We have some interesting features in this issue of SPArk that look at some of our writers favourite enrichments, so we hope you enjoy reading all about them! DID YOU KNOW? 2 Page 2 FEBRUARY 2018 Meeting The Man Behind The Maths By Viki Malabuyoc On Thursday 11 th January 2018, Hegarty Maths' very own creator, Mr. Hegarty, visited Stockport Academy. Stockport Academy is one of the top schools that use the maths support website Hegarty Maths, and a large amount of students use the website as either a resource to study from or simply to perform assessments for homework. Either way, Hegarty Maths is a very useful learning resource that has helped the students get better at Maths and improve their skills, whether it be addition, multiplication, or other exercises. During his visit, different classes and year groups were given an insight into the creation of Hegarty Maths. It all started when one of Mr. Hegarty's students was absent for a long period of time, due to his father falling ill. He came into the school, worried that his grades would drop, and in turn that he wouldn't pass his GCSEs. Mr. Hegarty started to make videos of his lessons, using technology to record them. He sent the video to that student every day. From that, he came up with the idea that he could help others using the same idea. He hired a student to design a website, paying him a large sum while the student worked with him during summer. He and the student worked to complete the website during summer, and finished it after over a year. The result was a genius website that ended up helping thousands of kids continue their learning. Refectory Review By Jamie Howarth Our refectory has lots of food and drink on the menu at break and lunch. At break time, the following foods you can get are: toast, croissant, pizza, cheese bagel, and a bacon barm. I think the food at Stockport Academy is amazing because all the refectory staff make it and don t buy it in. You can really taste the difference with homemade food. My favourite meals at lunch at the Academy are: panini, pizza, curry, Quorn chicken and rice and burgers. These are my favourite foods because they re not only nutritious, but tasty and delicious. Dinnerlady Miss Howes said: We have a very wide selection of food and drink to offer and all our meat is from a local butcher, the health of our students is at the heart of everything we do. Thanks to all the dinner staff that work so hard for us.

3 Page 3 FEBRUARY 2018 New Year, New You? By Megan Barlow Happy New Year! To celebrate this significant event, teachers as well as students have come up with their New Year resolutions. Shortly after New Year, I went around asking a few teachers what they want to achieve this year. R.E teacher Mrs Saatchi stated: I want to have more of a healthy approach to life. By Kawthar Ali Cheerleading Club is on every Tuesday in the dance studio after school. In cheerleading you can learn to lift, flip and create amazing routines. There is also a professional teacher called Elena who comes and teaches us, she is from the cheerleading group Rising Stars and she is amazing!! A couple of weeks ago, we had newcomers who wanted to learn how to cheerlead. We started with a tumble warm up and we did round offs, then we moved onto some difficult moves. We did stunts!!! Crunches, preps and cradles; all of which are very complicated to do. I enjoy it because I am learning new skills and making my bones stronger. Other people like it because they get to do it with their friends and to learn new skills, becoming an amazing cheerleader and we also go to competitive competitions. Cup Heartache for Year 8s By Ben Duckworth FOOTBALL: After winning 6-2 against Stockport School in the previous round of the cup, the Year 8 football team were drawn up against Hazel Grove. The team didn t get off to a good start when they conceded an early goal but a mess up at the back led to an instant comeback with a strike finding the bottom corner from Ben Duckworth. The constant pressure from Hazel Grove and failing to clear the ball led to Hazel Grove taking the lead again. Flipping Out For Cheerleading! The teams went off at half time at 3-1. Hazel Grove kept up the good football they were playing and made it 4-1 but the Academy fought back and got it back to 4-3 with a fortunate goal from Jack Caveney and a bullet header from Frazier Bernard. On the day, Hazel Grove were the better team and progressed to the next round winning 6-3.

4 Page 4 FEBRUARY 2018 Student Councils Come Together By Millie Capper There was a recent Student Council trip on the 5 th of February to the Town Hall. Student Council members from three schools in Stockport all came together and participated in multiple activities about different topics relating to their duties as Student Councillors. My team were the green group and we did a debating activity first. We debated about nuclear war imminence, if voting at 16 was more important than Curriculum For Life and learned about different sides of the argument. We were in a massive council chamber and we were facing each other as opposite sides of the debate. Stockport Youth Parliament (SYP) organised all of the activities for us and helped us learn a lot about how much our opinions mean. The next activity was about hate crime and ways to resolve it. We all sat down as a big group and thought of answers to questions like What would you do if you saw hate crime? What types of people would be a target? What rights do you have as human beings? and Who do we feel safe to talk to?. We all thought it was an amazing activity and we learned people can talk to anyone that they trust about something that's bothering them. I talked to one of the SYP members, who said: "I love hearing about young peoples' fascinating opinions. It's unusual to hear young people talk about their opinions, and that's why it's quite interesting". At the end of last term, Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 were invited on a Rewards Day. To qualify for this exciting day, you had to have less than 5 behaviour points and more than 98% attendance. At the Rewards Day there were a variety of activities such as rock climbing, archery and team building exercises. Everyone who attended had an amazing time and it was really fun. I asked Mr Molloy about the next Rewards Day and he told me he is thinking of organising another one in the Summer term and doing a slip and slide. That is something we can all look forward to! 5 Page 5 FEBRUARY 2018 Student Rockers By Lucas May On the day before school finished for the Christmas break, there was a show performed by the Rock Band Crew. The Rock Band Crew is an enrichment on a Thursday. You play musical instruments and learn new songs to play. We performed in the dance studio in front of an audience of the school. Songs included: Someone Like You (Kings of Leon), Boulevard Of Broken Dreams (Green Day), Seven Nation Army (The White Stripes) and Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana). Ewen, the bass player said: It was a good day and a good experience! I played the drums to Someone Like You because there were 3 drummers. The enrichment is a brilliant way to play the instruments you are good at in school, it is a privilege to have it in the school. The day itself was an incredible experience I will never forget. The girls football team practice takes place on a Thursday after school as a fun enrichment that all the girls can enjoy. During this club, you will get to go to matches against other schools. You can enjoy yourself and learn the rules, plus you will get to play with the lovely Miss Foster. Miss Foster leads the girls football team and will play in a match, cheer you on and help you improve on your skills. Miss Foster loves football so she runs this club to let the girls have a chance to play her favourite sport. The Year 7 girls are unbeaten, that just proves that Miss Foster makes a great football coach. Go Go Girls Football Team! It's so nice to see so many of our girls coming to enrichment and enjoying the sport that I love. We have some hidden talent and superstars, said Miss Foster. 6 Page 6 FEBRUARY 2018 On the 31 st January the school s Debate Team took part in round one of the Urban Debate League at Manchester Enterprise Academy. Mrs Sealy and Miss Foster entered four teams and our team C successfully won both debates! We were given 15 minutes to plan the debates, which were on the topics of whether or not children under the age of 16 should be targeted by adverts on Debating Dynamos By Abigail Yan TV, and if the police should be able to access our personal online data. Despite our other teams not winning it was a very good opportunity and we got lots of great feedback from the judges. We couldn t have given it our all without our University of Manchester mentor Zain (named Big-Z). Since Debate Mate started he has come with gobsmacking ideas to help us - he even came on the night to support us! What a brilliant night - good luck debate team for upcoming competitions. Round two takes place in March. You may have noticed Issue 2 of our student newsletter has a new logo on the front page! This was designed by SPArk contributor Emily Rogers whose design beat lots of other high quality entries in our design-a-logo competition this term. All entries were judged by Mrs Sealy and Mr Prince, who both said the quality of work submitted was of an exceptionally high standard and there were some really unique and imaginative designs that really reflected what SPArk is all about. A New Logo! Well done Emily, your idea will feature on every future issue of the newsletter!
