1 The Paw Print Mrs. Stacie Everson, Principal February 4, PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE We have successfully kicked off the second semester at Birkes Elementary! We are so proud of our Bulldogs and all they have accomplished so far this year. We still have a lot to cover before the end of the school year, but our amazing staff and students are focused and continuing to shine. Birkes is truly appreciative of the parental support that encourages the success of each of our students. Together, our students achieve more and reach for their goals! We would love for you to be a part of CFISD s sixth annual Superintendent s Fun Run and Festival at the Berry Center on Saturday, March 2, Registration is open now! The event features an exciting new 5k course, a 1-mile path through Cy-Fair FCU Stadium, family games, vendors, food trucks and fun for the entire community. Last year s contribution of $100,000 established Cy-Fair Educational Foundation s endowed Superintendent s Fun Run scholarship, and together we can match this contribution! Be sure to sign up as a part of the Birkes Elementary team if you choose to register at BENCHMARK TESTING Parents, please mark your calendar. Due to schedule changes and lunch/recess changes for all grade levels, please do not plan to visit the school for lunch on February 19 and 20 due to Benchmark testing. Please save having lunch with your child until a later date. Thanks for your help. NURSE S NOTES Please note, for safety reasons, all medications must be brought to and from school by an adult. Students cannot transport medicine. Your help and compliance with this policy will provide a safer environment for all students. Please bring any medications to the clinic. Thank you for your cooperation. VALENTINE PARTY Each year our campus is allowed to have two school parties. Our staff elected to have a Holiday Party and an End-of-Year Party. Birkes will not be having a Valentine s Day Party. Students will be allowed to bring Valentine cards to exchange during the last 15 minutes of the school day on Thursday, February 14. Please do not send candy or treats for the class with your child. Parents, please do not bring or send flowers/balloons to school for your student, as they will not be able to be delivered to the classroom or taken home on the bus. Thanks for your understanding. SPIRIT SHOP Our next Spirit Shop will be Friday, February 8. The Spirit Shop has small fun items for less than a dollar. It also has nice quality items such as pencil cases, sports bottles, and coin pouches that will last through elementary school. There is something for all the Birkes Bulldogs. Go Bulldogs! 4 TH AND 5 TH GRADE PARENTS MARK YOUR CALENDAR! Tuesday, February 5 6:00 p.m. 4 th grade STAAR Writing Night parents will meet in the Art Room and Library. 5 th grade STAAR Science and 5 th to 6 th Grade Middle School Transition parents will meet in the cafeteria. 2 COUNSELOR S CORNER Giving rewards and praise Children want to do well & make you happy. When we catch them being good and tell them, it increases good behavior. Practice looking for good things and rewarding them in one of the following ways: Verbal rewards - tell your child exactly what they did that you liked & praise them. Physical rewards - give them a pat on the back, hugs, high fives. Activity rewards - do something with your children they like to do, like play a game. Material rewards - special treat or toy helps when you start teaching a new behavior. THE BOOK FAIR IS COMING! Our Spring Book Fair will be held the week of March 4 8 in the library! Family Night will be on Monday, March 4 from 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm. More book fair information will be coming home with your student soon! Hope to see you there! SUPERINTENDENT S FUN RUN The sixth annual CFISD Superintendent s Fun Run and Festival is set for March 2, 2019 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Berry Center (8877 Barker Cypress Road) and the Towne Lake community. Underwritten by Memorial Hermann Cypress, the fun-filled community event will include a *5K run and a family-friendly \ **1-mile. New courses include a 5K run through Towne Lake, Lone Star College CyFair and a family path through Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union stadium. The fun run will feature booth vendors, food trucks, entertainment and activities for children. Proceeds from the Superintendent s Fun Run benefit the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF), which awards student scholarships and staff development grants. The Fifth Annual Superintendent s Fun Run and Festival held on March 24, 2018 generated $100,000 to the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF). 3 ELECTRONIC DEVICES Students may bring their own device, such as, ipods, ipads, Kindles, or cell phones for instructional purposes only, as determined by the teacher. However, students may not wear Smart Watches during the instructional day. Students will be asked to remove their Smart Watch and place it in their backpack. FitBit or step monitoring devices are allowed if they do not have internet access. Any personal electronic devices are the responsibility of the student. Campus and District personnel will not assume responsibility for damaged, lost or stolen items. When the devices are not in use for instructional purposes, they must be turned off and put away. If students violate the use of the electronic devices during the instructional day, the devices may be confiscated. The instructional school day is defined as anytime students are under the direct supervision of a Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D. employee. This includes, but is not limited to, riding the bus to and from school; students waiting in the campus bus loading zone (morning and afternoon); in the building before and after school; class time, before, during or after any state assessment or district testing; transitions between classes; lunch time; and before or after school tutorials. A person who discovers a student in violation of this policy shall report the infraction to the appropriate school administrator. In accordance with Texas Education Code Section , the device will be confiscated and returned to the owner after a $15.00 administrative fee is collected. A student s parent, guardian, or non-student owner may pick up the device after showing proof of ownership.
