2 Interview with Carlos Dunlap, Cincinnati Bengals #96 Carlos Dunlap is the son of Ms. Ross. He plays defensive end for the Cincinnati Bengals. They chose him in the NFL draft. Carlos came to our C.A.T.C.H. night. He talked with everyone and signed autographs. Carlos said he works hard and practices a lot. He attended Fort Dorchester High School. It was a childhood dream for him to play a professional sport. By Joshua Robinson and Lamar Holmes Meet Our Front Office Staff Ms. Cole is our secretary. She answers the telephone and helps teachers. 3 Ms.Allen, Ms.Winston, and Ms.Taylor Share about Garden Club and Yoga Club Ms. Allen and the C.A.T.C.H Team made-up the Garden Club to show kids how to use tools and plant a garden. They teach lessons about gardening to the club to show them how to plant. They give away free things from the garden, because they want the kids to learn to eat healthy food and learn how to grow their own food. They like for the students to eat all the things from the garden. Ms. Taylor s side of the story is that this shows the kids how to stay healthy. Ms. Allen teaches yoga club. We have a yoga club so that we can teach yoga to the girls so they can learn to relax and show other people how to do yoga. Yoga club is here to help us learn to be healthy. They also learned how to write in their books about how they feel. Yoga Club is only for fourth and fifth grade girls. By Jayla Bethea and Frida Real Contreras Ms.Burbage and Ms.Cook Ms. Burbage and Ms. Cook said if students practice, they can become better readers. Their students love to read every day. They believe everybody can be awesome at reading. The students they see do not take AR test when they finish reading. Some of their students read well and some do not. They want everyone to practice so they can be great readers. We hope that Ms. Burbage and Ms. Cook are back next year. By Adolfo Vasquez and Jeremiah Robinson

We are happy he is working here at Goodwin this year. He learned how to be a police officer when he went to the Police Academy. At the Academy he learned how to drive a police car, the state laws, how to shoot, and federal laws. Officer Nathan likes being a police officer because he helps keep bad people off the street. He has had to arrest a lot of people that drive while they are drunk. Sometimes he has had to chase people on foot and by car. He loves working here at Goodwin. Officer Nathan has had to pull out some of his weapons, but he has not ever had to use them. The weapons he uses are a fire arm and a tazer. We hope Officer Nathan will be with us next year! By Khaliq Edwards
5 Communities in Schools and Ms. Winston Ms. Winston does many things to help Goodwin students and families. She works for Communities in Schools. Here are some of the things Ms. Winston does to help us. In Reading Soul Mates we read in reading groups. She said the students need to be organized and learn about self-esteem and making good choices. She helps with Backpack Buddies. The food comes from Low Country Food Bank. Each backpack has 2 milks, 2 whole grains, and 2 kid sized entrees. Her team also helps with C.A.T.C.H. Night. Ms. Franklin designed the flyers for C.A.T.C.H. Night. They had help translating the flyers into Spanish. They invited some community vendors, gave away prizes, and made place cards for the vendor tables. Ms. Winston runs a Yoga Club with Ms. Allen. In yoga class the girls learn how to use stretching poses as a way to relax and be healthy. They also learned CPR. The kids reacted seriously to CPR training. They learned they have to take it seriously because it's a matter of life and death. In the future she plans to try to do some classes for boys. By Jasmin Santiago and Kaitlyn Roberts The S.S. Hunley The Hunley is a first submarine to sink a ship. It was built in Mobile, Alabama. The Hunley was named for Horace Lawson Hunley. He was a submarine pioneer. The Hunley had 3 crews. There were 9 crew members on the first crew. The first crew was run by volunteers. It sank off the end of Fort Johnson. Four crew members survived and five drowned. The second crew was believed to be employees of Park and Lyons. That is the company that built the Hunley. There were 8 crew members on the Hunley this time. The Hunley sank and all 8 crew members died. The Hunley was retrieved and made its final trip. The third crew had 8 members. This crew was led by Lieutenant George E. Dixon. The Hunley was able to ram a torpedo into the USS Housatonic. This caused an explosion and the ship to sink. Adventurer and author, Clive Cussler, found the Hunley in It was recovered on August 8, Scientists are trying to find out what caused the Hunley to sink. It is now on display in Charleston, SC. You can see the Hunley on Saturdays and Sundays at the Warren Lasch Conservation Center. It is located on the old Charleston Navy Base. By Isaac Batista Vidal

Some of the tools they use to cook with are an oven, braising pans, steamer pans, knives, carts, milk boxes, freezer and coolers. These reporters wanted to know why crackers were added to trays with PB & J s. They told us that they added them to meet the bread requirement. We also wanted to know if the apples they serve are healthy. Ms Alfono said apples are healthy because they have 65 calories with no fat or sodium.
