..to your latest newsletter from the NE Region. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!! We hope that everyone had a good and can still remember Christmas and New Year even though it is February already and time to be raring to go for the new season. I m sure that overalls will be freshly washed, emerging slightly smaller (which has nothing at all to do with that second helping of pud ) kit checked and ready to go. Before we start the new hillclimb and track seasons we have training days at both Harewood for Speed Marshals and Brackenborough Hall near Louth for circuit Marshals, details of both these events, including how to apply, are in the newsletter. We also have photos from the social and awards evening, including the well deserving winners. It was a well attended and lively evening with stiff competition for the team to win the quiz; it s amazing how competitive marshals can be when there is chocolate to be won. We hope to repeat this event next year. We would also pleased to have new committee members voted in at the AGM, this includes Rally and Kart representatives, you can read their updates later in the newsletter. We look forward to seeing you at the training days or events through the year. Highlights. 3 CHAIRMAN S CHAT Welcome to the 61 st. year of the BMMC, the only Club run by Marshals for Marshals that has been in existence for all involved in all aspects of motorsport marshalling. The coming year holds all the usual exciting opportunities for us to ensure that we enjoy our chosen activity, be it with Rallies, Races, Sprints, Hill climbs, Karts, etc, be it at an International, National, or Clubby status, in the most professional and safest manner possible. It is very pleasing to see that we are going from strength to strength as our Membership increases in numbers. We are volunteers and do it for the love of our chosen hobby. I m sure that I speak for all of you, by giving our sincere and heartfelt congratulations to the winners of the BMMC N.E. Region 2017 awards, within their individual disciplines. Details can be found later in this newsletter.:- As we go into the 2018 Motor Sports Season, with availability forms arriving from all quarters now that most Clubs have finalised their dates, we have to make decisions of where we will be offering our services. I ve noticed this 3 year that it is going to be quite a problem with having so many clashing dates, but you can only be in one place at a time, so please help the Chief Marshals by not duplicating different meetings at different venues. For most of us, this starts with attending Training Days, be it at Louth, Harewood, or Croft, details of which are included elsewhere in this publication. Why not attend one, whether you need a signature or not, it helps to keep you up to date with anything new in the way that we do our jobs. If you intend to Marshal abroad this year, don t forget that the Clubs Overseas Insurance is the most economical and best you can get. Once again you can rest assured that our insurance cover remains to be the best possible available again this year, with a very good, economical cover, ( 10), for overseas marshalling should you wish to try your hand in Europe. As a Member of the BMMC/BMRMC we will continue to promote the benefits of our Club membership, encourage membership, and most importantly look after our fellow marshals by giving them maximum support in all aspects of their activities. Also to extol the virtues of BMMC Membership to our marshalling colleagues who marshal regularly with us but do not belong to any club or organisation within motorsport.

Vision British Motorsports Marshals Club Making Marshals Matter To be the Club of choice for UK Motorsports Marshals to join our wonderful Team To recruit and provide training, to extol the benefits of Membership, by being a voice at the to represent them at the MSA, and to develop motorsport marshalling for the benefit of all. How do we achieve the vision. Recruit marshals - directly and indirectly Promote and enhance the image of the Club Train marshals - providing information and enhancing skills through training and development opportunities Represent marshals with other motorsport organisers and with the relevant Authorities on matters that affect the marshals and motorsport Provide benefits, services and support to our members Be independent, never afraid to speak out for what we believe Be open and honest, do what we believe is best for our members and motorsport, Put our members first in what we do and create opportunities to involve our members wherever possible. We are the: British Motorsports Marshals Club THE Marshal s club, for Marshals, run by Marshals. You may be aware that the MSA are now requesting copies of Personal Record Cards to confirm attendance at events. Please therefore remember to obtain signatures at the end of the day from your post chief, or if this id not possible a neighbouring post chief or the chief marshal. If you are not seeking an upgrade, or your personal record card has no more space then continuation sheets can be downloaded 4

Chairman s Chat (cont d.) To continue to develop the way forward in training, to recruit new marshals in all disciplines, and to retain the services of existing marshals. It is our intention to hold monthly committee meetings and invite members to attend as observers, followed by general discussions on any marshalling matters, so that we, as a committee can be truly representative of their views and what they expect from our Club. Following our Regional AGM last November, I am pleased to be able to give a very warm welcome to two new Committee Members now sitting on the N.E. Committee, namely Rally Rep Rob Miller and Kart Rep Dan Ashton. (Their contact details are on the Region Committee contact list). This means that we can now fully represent all disciplines in our beloved sport. With this in mind, this may be a good time to refresh our Clubs Vision Our Club is in a very sound financial position, and you will be aware that once again there has not been an increase in Membership Fees. We are indebted to the sponsors who are continuing this year to sponsor the overalls, as well as the generous donations that have been received from the many supporting motorsport orientated organisations. The annual accounts of the Club, will be available for inspection on the members section of the BMMC Web Site when it becomes fully operational. All Regions of the BMMC are members of their local car clubs associations, and we in the N.E. Region are Members of the ANCC, Association of Northern Car Clubs. Lynne and I attended an ANCC Delegates meeting on Monday 13th December at the Cleckheaton Sports Club. The Association consists of 82 Member Clubs, so we have a very large audience in our Region, and I came away with some very positive results. In addition, I was very surprised to learn that a great number of the Clubs were un-aware of our existence! Something we will definitely be putting right, starting by placing an advert in the 2018 ANCC Year Book which is sent to all Member Clubs. After the meeting was closed we had several positive discussions with other ANCC Members, including Heidi of Go Motor Sport. This was followed up by another Delegates Meeting on January 8th this year, which also proved very worthwhile, making new contacts and putting ourselves forward to being able to offer help in any Marshalling matters especially advertising their events and calls of help. I know that there has been some difficulties with the Clubs Volunteering site, and I m assured that most, if not all the problems have been rectified or are in the final process of rectification by an IT company that has been commissioned by Council. 5

Chairman s Chat (cont d.) Can I also ask that if you are experiencing any problems with volunteering via this method, then please contact our Regional Volunteer Co-Ordinator, whose contact details are available in the contacts list elsewhere in this Newsletter? Have you logged onto the Clubs web site recently, if not, then do so and check out the new regalia which includes some new designer clothing. Our Regional Regalia Rep will answer any queries you may have, and he always has a suitcase full of Regalia items where ever he is marshalling. Also you will be able to check out all training Days planned as well as what is happening in all the other Regions of our Club. As a reward for visiting the web site every month, you are automatically entered into a monthly random draw, the winner each month will receive an item from the new Team Wear clothing. While on the web page you will be able to check and update your own contact details, especially if you change your e- mail address. This is most important because general notifications to every Member are now sent via Mail-Chimp electronically. If you do not have an address please let me know so that I can arrange for you to receive the information by post. In conclusion, thank you for all that you have done, and will be doing this year in whatever discipline in whatever part of Motor Sport that you are involved in. Each one of you play your part to make sure that all types of motor sports events take place in such a professional and safe manner. Well, that s enough for now, I wish you all a very happy, safe, and enjoyable year doing what you like best in our beloved Motorsport activities, and I hope to see most of you at an event during the year. If you have any queries, problems, suggestions, or require information on any aspects of Marshalling, please get in touch with any Committee Member whose details are listed on the Contacts page. Above all else, Stay Safe, John Watson BMMC N.E. Region Chairman

Rally Training Rally Round-up To become an accredited rally marshal all you have to do is go to msauk.org and do the on line training. However I cannot stress enough that this is very basic and no replacement for a MSA Training day. The training days are very well run by volunteers who sacrifice a huge amount of there time to give you the best possible training on all the modules you require. There are some great trainers who will be sure you have a good day and walk away learning something new. Take a look at Training to find a day to suit you. The next available date is: 18/3/18 Derby university John Jones johnjones10@btconnect.com *** This year I had a visit to wales for Rally GB. Sweet Lamb and Aberhirnant were our chosen stages. Sweet lamb was a great stage and very well manned. Sadly, it s not just the circuit rally championship that looks a little undermanned in places. At Aberhirenant I was 1 of 3 marshals and a radio crew on junction 2. We also covered a sector of junction 3. The internationals came through twice and the nationals had 1 run through between ss8 and ss15. Again we had nothing major to deal with other spectators and a Landover in a ditch. If something had have happened it s a massive area to go and fine a car, and you can t always know what you re going too. More marshals to cover these areas would be fantastic. Sad news to learn that the Riponian Rally in February 2018 will not be running. The forests around Helmsley are no longer available to the event. 8

There was not enough time to find new stages or service area and finish venue as well as completing all the safety requirements and having them approved. The team decided not to run in 2018 but begin planning 2019 which would be 50 years since the first Riponian. Yorkshire rally found us in Dalby Friday night for a great stage and then langdale Saturday morning. Again it was all very well run and a great mix of cars. We just had to run and find a car that had activated his rallytrack radio to say he was about a 1/3 way in stage and broken down. After a ¼ mile jogg he and co-driver were found safe and well clear of stage, broken driveshaft to blame. Then it was straight back into Dalby for the afternoon. A brilliant Rally to marshal on. Similar to the Malton stages, north Yorkshire. It was my first visit in Cropton forest and had a great day.. Very muddy so much so we had 2 cars into a ditch, not a very deep but the thick mud was a challenge. Some willing spectators helped get a TR7 out and back on stage, only for him to drive straight back in to the ditch even deeper. There he stayed along with the sunbeam behind him with broken steering. All good fun! Hope to see out on the stages sometime soon! From your NE Rally Rep Rob Miller Other rally dates: Jack neal memorial rally Blyton 10th feb marshals@halltrophy.co.uk Matt Broadbent you Jane cowling memorial phoenix stages rally Fulbeck 4th 5th Aug Harold Palin Rally Fulbeck 7th oct Sandrahickling3@btinternet.com

MSN CIRCUIT RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP The rally is now well on its way and once again there is no shortage of entries, but sadly there could do with a few more marshals at some of the rounds!! I was at the fantastic Cadwell park circuit in Lincolnshire for round 2 of the championship. A brilliant day was had but there were 2 of us that had a large area to cover with 2 junctions. Thankfully we only had 1 incident to deal with at the end of stage 3 when a car had a double roll down the mountain. Both driver and co-driver wasn t seriously injured but medics were called due to one of them having glass in his eyes. After a quick visit to the med centre they were both fine. Once again the first on scene, team work and sector marshal modules on the training days really do help! Especially when it goes wrong for the competitors and you re the only marshals around. There are 4 more round of the championship left: Round 5 Snetterton Round 6 Donington Round 7 Anglesey Round 8 Cadwell Park 18th February 4th March 18th March 8th April All the details can be found at:

Karting Round-up! 16 With the welcoming of new committee members, we have been able to have a slight shift of duties and relieve the work load of some of our existing officers. As such we are pleased to announce that Peter Howarth will take over the reigns of Grading with effect from February. Peter has been a committee member before (until his employment got in the way ) so knows the process and is able to hit the deck running. Peter s contact details can be found near the back of this newsletter. Many of you will have been collecting signatures for attendance and upgrade; here are a few reminders for what you need to do to ensure your upgrade goes smoothly: When collecting signatures, please do not utilise other pages meant for other grades instead use a continuation sheet which is available from the MSA website or a PRC sized version can be obtained from the NE Grading Officer; Ensure that you have all the correct signatures, assessments, training day modules, and paperwork (PRC, MSA Form, MSA registration card, BMMC badge) in place before sending off to the regional Grading Officer; When signing off an attendance signature for a colleague, ensure you write an appropriate comment on the PRC (good or developmental) to assist with future upgrading decision making; If you require an upgrade assessment let it be known to the Chief Marshal of the circuit or next event, so that they can try and accommodate your request within the post/duty allocations. If you have any questions or require further advice please contact our new NE Grading Officer for 2018 Peter Howarth. 16

MARSHALS REGISTRATION If you are having difficulties registering on the new BMMC database, then please read the following. This registration is not just for the new Volunteering system but is the preferred method for updating your personal details held on the new Members database. We transferred the information from the old to the new database wholesale, so if there was any info out of date then it remains so until members register and update their profile. Contact us by and quote your name and BMMC membership number and we will update your address on the system allowing you to register. When you receive confirmation of your update then please follow the registration instructions. Do it now. To view a Quick Reference Guide to the volunteering system please, go to the BMMC web site, VOLUNTEERING Competition Secretaries (Now known as Volunteering Co-ordinators) Their role in the system is to enter the event and add information as it becomes available. there are various fields and drop down lists for them to use to simplify the process, they should enter as much information as is available at the outset and add to it if more information becomes available. There is the facility to add documents to the system for example sign on instructions, event timetables etc. As marshals volunteer the volunteers are collated and saved. If a marshal is unable to volunteer using the online system they can still contact their competition secretary or BMMC registered chief marshal and they are able to add the name to the list providing the marshal is a BMMC member. This removes the need for anyone to manually collate all of the BMMC volunteer 18

Welcome to the section of our magazine especially dedicated to our younger members the Cadets! The Cadets of motorsport are the future generation marshals and vital for the sustainability of our volunteer network. Cadets can begin from the age of 11 years old, but come into their own from the age of 14 when they can begin working in the paddock. We re looking for a new Cadet Rep who can give our younger marshals a voice and act as a mentor to support them in their early years of the sport. Therefore if you are under 25 and are interested in this opportunity, please get in touch with our regional Secretary, Dave Tasker. Help us raise funds for the Air Ambulance! You can shop with over 2,000 well known stores and each will donate up to 15% of what you spend. For example, John Lewis will donate 2.5%, Amazon 2.5%, The Body Shop 10%, some insurance retailers will even donate up to 30 simply for taking out a policy with them!it doesn't cost you a penny more The great thing is it won't cost you any more, plus we've got lots of voucher codes and special discounts so you can actually save money while you help your good cause. There is no cost for the good cause either our service is totally free. How to generate donations It's very simple - once you've registered with us, when you shop with one of our retailers, our system makes a note of your purchase, collects the donation from the retailer and passes it to your chosen good cause. That's it! No hassle for you, we do all the hard work while you shop as your normally would. marshallingtotties/ 22
