LUGOFF-ELGIN HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING PRIDE Student s Name / Instrument or Section LUGOFF-ELGIN HIGH SCHOOL 1284 Highway 1 South Lugoff, SC Band Office: LUGOFF-ELGIN BAND CLUB Post Office Box 34 Lugoff, SC 29078
LUGOFF-ELGIN HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING PRIDE PERSEVERANCE steady persistence in a course of action; a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulty, obstacles, or discouragement RESPECT - esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person, a personal quality or ability, or something considered as a manifestation of a personal quality or ability INTEGRITY adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty DETERMINATION the act of coming to a decision or fixing or settling a purpose ENTHUSIASM absorbing or controlling possession of the mind by any interest or pursuit; lively interest
RULES AND REGULATIONS As in all groups the Lugoff-Elgin Bands must operate under a certain number of rules and regulations in order to ensure the successful completion of its goals. Even though some of the regulations may vary from activity to activity, it is important that each rule and regulation be understood and followed by each band member. Because of the size of the organization it is necessary to operate many times under an HONOR SYSTEM. When the trust has been lost between a student and the band director(s) it will be impossible for that student to continue in the organization. All rules and regulations are designed to serve one of three purposes. To ensure the safety of the student. To protect and maintain the reputation of the organization. To allow the group to meet its objectives. While it is true that some rules will vary from time to time, it should be noted that: THE USE OF ALCOHOL, ILLEGAL DRUGS, AND TOBACCO IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN DURING ANY AND ALL BAND ACTIVITIES. All students and parents should be aware of the actions that will be taken as a result of certain student misconduct. 1. If a student commits an illegal act during a band activity, the student will be turned over to the nearest law enforcement office and the student s parents will be contacted by that office. Examples of an illegal act could be the use of alcohol, the use of illegal drugs, or shoplifting. 2. If a student breaks a safety rule during a band activity, the student s parents will be notified and arrangements will be made for the student s immediate removal from that activity. Examples of safety rule violations could be swimming without permission, leaving a motel room without permission, or accepting a ride in an automobile without permission. 3. If a student breaks a school rule during a band activity, the student will be sent to the school administration for disciplinary action at the earliest opportunity. Examples of school rule violations could be using tobacco, using obscene language or gestures, or the willful destruction or defacing of school property.
What is the High School Band Experience? Unlike Most Other Classes, band offers a wide variety of opportunities for the student. It is one of the only classes where excellence is not only expected, but also essential to success. Imagine if an English teacher graded everyone in the class at the level of the weakest student! I ll bet you would not see heads on desks and homework going undone. In band, everyone MUST achieve at the highest level, or a performance will sound terrible. Even one person making a grade of 60 on a piece of music means that 40% of the notes were played in error not pleasant to hear! In addition to teaching performance skills, band teaches the student to be an active, thinking person. For each note played, there are numerous considerations and instantaneous decisions to be made. How loud or soft? How fast or slow? How does the note start? How does it end? Who else plays it? Am I in-tune? Nowhere else on campus is the demand for active thought any stronger. Band also teaches life skills. Communication is the main component of music. The rehearsal and performance schedule of band demands planning and time management skills that will be valuable all through life. Goal setting, problem solving, peer interaction all of these develop quickly as a part of the band experience. The band program at Lugoff-Elgin High School has established itself as one of the finest programs in the state. Students have the opportunity that many other bands only dream about. Few other activities offer the travel opportunities, the chance to meet and interact with musicians from around the country, and the satisfaction of knowing that your time, talent, and effort have paid off through the highest levels of achievement. We strongly believe that there is a place for everyone in the band. We have had hundreds of success stories. Many times, students who thought they were not interested have become some of the most dedicated members once they have been part of the experience. If you choose to participate, you can reap a variety of rewards. In addition to all of this, you become a member of a very active, multifaceted family. BEYOND THE MUSIC / LIFE S LESSONS You don t stop until you get it right! Everybody s part is different, and everybody s part is important! Nobody is successful until everybody is successful! Glenn C. Price Director of Bands Lugoff-Elgin High School

AEROBIC AND CORE EXERCISES The Proper Way to Exercise Core Muscles Tips for training core muscles by James Schoffstall of Liberty University and Stuart McGill of the University of Waterloo Good results can come from unexpected places, including the weight room. James Schoffstall, director of exercise science at Liberty University in Virginia, says dead lifts and squats are proven ways to strengthen the core. As he explains, the core muscles have to stiffen throughout the lifts. He adds that the moves prepare the body for real-life activities outside of the gym. "Picking up a suitcase that's a dead lift," he says. "Getting up off the toilet that's a squat." It doesn't take huge amounts of weight to get results, Schoffstall says. He recommends trying a simple "suitcase squat." Stand up straight holding a 5- or 10-pound dumbbell at your side in one hand. Then extend your opposite arm and slowly squat down as if you were about to sit in a chair. Repeat 10 times or so and then switch sides. Over the years, Stuart McGill, the director of the spine biomechanics laboratory at the University of Waterloo in Canada, has settled on his own "big three" core exercises that he recommends as part of a comprehensive workout routine. The exercises known as the curl up, the side bridge and the bird dog were designed to provide the most core benefit without putting undue stress on the spine. "A lot of science went into developing these exercises," he says. He adds that many serious athletes will need more intense core workouts that go beyond the basic three. McGill and an assistant demonstrate these exercises in a YouTube video called "Train the Core the Right Way." Here are the routines, briefly. In each, you should hold the position for up to eight seconds at a time. You can gradually increase the number of repetitions as your core gets stronger. MCGILL S BIG THREE (search YouTube for video) Curl Up: Lie on your back with one knee bent and one leg straight on the floor. With your hands under the small of your back for extra support, barely lift your head and shoulders off the ground. Side Bridge: Lie on your side. Using your forearm as a brace, lift your body up so that only your arm and the side of your foot are touching the ground. (Beginners may want to support themselves with their knees.) Your body should be completely straight. Bird Dog: Start on all fours with your hands directly under your shoulders and your knees directly under your hips. Point one arm straight forward and stick the opposite leg straight out, once again keeping the spine still and straight. OTHER CORE EXERCISES Minute On/Minute Off - Select some low intensity exercise that will raise your heart and repertory rate such as; fast walking, jogging, running in place, skipping rope, etc. Exercise for 1 minute then rest for 1 minute. Do five on-off cycles for a total of 10 minutes. Do this at least twice a day; morning and night. Walking lunges with weights - Holding your weights in each hand, take a giant step forward with your right leg, lowering the body until your right thigh is parallel to the floor. Keep your back straight and focus looking forward. Straighten up and bring the left leg forward into the next step as you move across the floor or down your hallway. Aim for 10 lunges in a row and then turn around and repeat. Do this twice. Sit down/stand up squat - Stand in front of a chair and sit down on the seat. Then stand back up, raising your arms until they are straight out in front of your shoulders. Repeat 20 times. Kick backs - Start on all fours on the mat or towel on the floor. Then take your right leg and extend it straight back with your foot off the floor. Next, bend the knee and flex your foot, press the leg up and then lower, all the while squeezing your buttocks. Do 25 lifts on each leg. Card pick-up squat - Remove 15 cards from a deck and hold them in one hand. Take one card and deal it down onto the floor as you squat down by bending the knees, keeping your weight on your heels and wiggling your toes as you come up. Do this until the cards are all down on the floor. Then pick one up at a time, the same way you put them down. Hip/butt lift - Using either a coffee table or the seat of a sturdy chair, lie on your back with your hips on the floor and place your heels on the coffee table or seat of the chair. Next, press down with your heels and lift up your hips. Squeeze your buttocks and lift as far as you can. Slowly lower down and repeat. Do 20 reps and then repeat the set.
