1 COLÁISTE CHRAOBH ABHANN PRESENTS Wednesday 9th Friday 11th March 2016 The Mermaid Arts Centre Bray
2 Principal s Welcome Welcome to Coláiste Chraobh Abhann s tenth annual musical production. This year s production is CRAZY FOR YOU, in which a stage-struck New York playboy, Bobby Child, is sent to a small, poor town in Nevada to close down the local theatre. Soon Bobby falls in love with the theatre owner s daughter, Polly. In order to save the theatre, he dreams up the idea to put on a show to raise money for the theatre. In the end, the town is reinvigorated, the theatre is saved and Bobby finds love. The musical is a high energy comedy which includes mistaken identity, plot twists, fabulous dance numbers and classic Gershwin music. Each year the school musical provides our students with the opportunity to develop socially, personally and artistically by joining the cast of the chosen production. Cast members always remember the show as one of the highlights of their school lives and I know they cherish the memories for many years to come. By the time the curtain closes, there will have been new friendships forged and, of course, lots of fun had by all. I wish to thank the Choreographer Ms Yvonne Prendergast and the Musical Director Ms Siobhán Gallagher for their professionalism and dedication in working with the cast over the last few months. I also wish to extend my gratitude to all staff members who helped out over the last few months and have volunteered to help out back stage at the four performances. Thanks to Mr John Blake for all his hard work with her TY team on the publication of the musical programme for tonight s performance. The caretaking team of Mr Vincent Hunt and Mr Chris Nugent have the stage sets and props prepared to the highest standards while Mr Conor Kennedy ensures everything runs smoothly behind the scenes and on the stage with the help of his TY team of assistants. Ms Stephanie Cogavin ensured that attendance at rehearsals was kept at a high level throughout the year with Mr Kennedy and his TY Sales Team ensuring that all performances were SOLD OUT by taking charge of tickets sales. Thanks to Ms Margaret McCormack who organised TY students into teams working on a range of activities related to the musical from raffle ticket sales to promotion of the musical. Ms Niamh Tarrant and Mr Gareth McRory and their TY students prepared the billboards for promotion of the musical in the community. A special thanks also to the Parents Council members who have worked behind the scenes in the lead up to tonight s performance. The show simply could not have gone on without their support and assistance. In addition, I wish to acknowledge the support of our generous sponsors who are listed in the programme. Finally, I wish to offer a sincere thanks to The Mermaid Arts Centre and its wonderfully supportive staff for providing the school with such an excellent venue. Now sit back and enjoy the performance. I know you will leave the theatre after tonight s performance with many fond memories. Shane Eivers Principal

17 Background to Crazy For You Crazy For You is the classic tale of a boy, a girl and a theatre in need of salvation. Stage-struck Bobby Child works as a banker for his overbearing mother, Lottie, but spends his off hours practicing dance routines and sneaking in to audition for Zangler s Follies, the most popular show in New York City. Unfortunately, Bobby s showbiz career is going nowhere and his strident fiancé is insisting that he name the date, so when Lottie demands that he investigate a far-away customer who has defaulted on a mortgage, Bobby jumps at the chance to get out of town. Arriving in hot, quiet Deadrock, Nevada, Bobby falls for Polly Baker, the sweet and sturdy postmistress whose father happens to own the beautiful but decaying Gaiety Theatre, which he has been sent to seize. Now lovestruck, Bobby comes up with a plan: call in his friends, the Follies Girls, all the way from New York City, cast the locals, a bunch of rundown cowboys with latent musical talent and put on a show to save the old building. Polly in turn falls for the enthusiastic young man, but feels angry and betrayed when she discovers that he has come from the bank. In order to spend time with the furious Polly, Bobby disguises himself as Bela Zangler of Zangler s Follies.. But while Zangler is talking up Bobby to the unsuspecting Polly, Polly is falling for the impersonation of dashing European Zangler. and when the real Zangler arrives in town, chasing Tessie, his beloved dance captain, things really get Crazy! With a fast-paced and light-hearted script and a collection of the most beloved tunes of George and Ira Gershwin, including the day-dreamy Can t Be Bothered Now, the catchy, high-energy Slap That Bass, and the plaintive, romantic Someone To Watch Over Me, Crazy For You is a truly delightful homage to the beloved, optimistic musicals of the 1930s: a world of showgirls and cowboys, in which a city boy and a country girl reconcile their differences, fall in love, and save a theatre, the old-fashioned way.
