2 Welcome to Coláiste Chraobh Abhann s eleventh annual musical production. This year s production is CALAMITY JANE. Calamity Jane can outrun and outshoot any man in Deadwood. Hard, boastful and desperate to impress, she travels to Chicago on the Deadwood Stage to recruit a star, Adelaide Adams. But things don't go too smoothly for Calamity, as everyone in town favours the new girl and she struggles to keep her jealousy and pride in check. It takes her long standing enemy Wild Bill Hickok to make her see sense, and realise her Secret Love. Get ready to hear some well known musical numbers such as Secret Love, Black Hills Of Dakota, Deadwood Stage and Windy City. Each year the school musical provides our students with the opportunity to develop socially, personally and artistically by joining the cast of the chosen production. Cast members always remember the show as one of the highlights of their school lives and I know they cherish the memories for many years to come. By the time the curtain closes, there will have been new friendships forged and, of course, lots of fun had by all. I wish to thank the Choreographer Ms Yvonne Prendergast and Musical Director Ms Siobhán Gallagher for their professionalism and dedication in working with the cast over the last few months. I also wish to extend my gratitude to all staff members who helped out over the last few months and have volunteered to help out back stage at the four performances. Thanks to Mr Blake for all his hard work with his TY team on the publication of the musical programme for tonight s performance. The caretaking team of Mr Vincent Hunt and Mr Chris Nugent have the stage sets and props prepared to the highest standards while Mr Conor Kennedy ensures everything runs smoothly behind the scenes and on the stage with the help of his TY team of assistants. Ms Stephanie Egan ensured that attendance at rehearsals was kept at a high level throughout the year with Mr Kennedy and Ms Egan and their TY Sales Team ensuring that all performances were SOLD OUT by taking charge of tickets sales. Thanks to Ms Margaret McCormack for all her work in preparation for the show. Ms Niamh Tarrant and Mr Gareth McRory and their TY students prepared the billboards for promotion of the musical in the community. A special thanks also to the Parents Council members who have worked behind the scenes in the lead up to tonight s performance. The show simply could not have gone on without their support and assistance. In addition, I wish to acknowledge the support of our generous sponsors who are listed in the programme. Finally, I wish to offer a sincere thanks to The Mermaid Arts Centre and its wonderfully supportive staff for providing the school with such an excellent venue. 16 The musical is loosely based on the life of Wild West heroine Calamity Jane, renowned for her sharp-shooting, whiskey swilling, and cross-dressing ways but also for her kindness towards others. Deadwood City's two most famous peace officers, Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok, get involved in saving the neck of Henry Miller, the local saloon operator. It seems that "Millie" has been promoting a beautiful actress named Frances Fryer, but Frances turns out to be a boy, Francis. Millie's attempt to cover up is soon unmasked by the angry miners, and only Calamity can cool the crowd with her trusty pistols. To keep the peace, Calamity sets out for Chicago to bring back the miner's real heart-throb, Adelaide Adams. In Chicago Calamity mistakes Adelaide's maid, Katie Brown, for the actress and hauls her back to Deadwood. Onstage Katie is greeted warmly, but breaks down and confesses that she is not the famous star. Calamity once more has to restore order and persuades the audience to give Katie a chance. They do, and she wins the heart of every male in town including Calamity's dashing love hope, Lt. Danny Gilmartin. Calamity reluctantly overcomes her jealousy over losing Danny and discovers her true love for Wild Bill Hickok. The toe-tapping musical score includes the Oscarwinning Secret Love, which became a million-selling hit for Doris Day, as well The Deadwood Stage (Whip-Crack-Away), Just Blew in from the Windy City and The Black Hills of Dakota. 19 Molly Smith is a second year student. She takes the main role of Calamity Jane in her first musical this year. Outside of school Molly enjoys doing drama. Luke Byrne is a fifth year student, this is his fourth musical. He was Mingo in Crazy for you last year. Outside of school Luke is part of a drama group. Roisín Belton is a fifth year student, this is her third musical with the school. She previously appeared in Grease and Crazy for you. Roisín is part of Roundwood Variety Group outside of school. Cormac Gilnagh is a fifth year student, this is his third musical. He starred as Wyatt in last years production of Crazy For You. He enjoys athletics outside of school. Calamity Jane is the fourth school musical for fifth year student Roisin Keegan. She has been in musicals since the age of three and enjoys playing the ukulele and doing first aid courses in her free time. Matthew Byrne is a fifth year student, this is his second musical. Last year he was Moose in Crazy For You. Matthew is excited for this years musical and wishes luck to the cast.

20 Marc Brady is a fifth year student, this is his third musical. He starred as Eugene in Crazy for you last year. Outside of school Marc is part of RVG and had a main part in this years production. Molly Hayes is a fifth year student, this is her third musical. She appeared in Crazy For You and Footloose. When not on stage, Molly plays GAA. Alex Synnott is a fifth year student, this is his second musical. Last year he was Everett in Crazy For You. Outside of school he is involved in kickboxing and football. Nicole Abrigo is a fourth year student, this is her third musical. She also appeared in Grease and Footloose. She is very excited about this years musical. In her spare time she enjoys Conor Power is a second year student, this is his second musical with the school. He appeared in Crazy For You last year. After school Conor enjoys playing GAA. Erika Bellamy is a fourth year student, this is her third musical. She also appeared in Grease and Footloose. Erika enjoys playing sport in her spare time and plays GAA. Zach Kelly: This second year student is making his musical debut. In his spare time, Zach enjoys going out with his friends and listening to music. Megan Rea is a Transition Year student who is looking forward to taking part in her 3rd CCA musical. As a soloist in Men it s no secret that Megan loves music and singing. She plays rugby in her spare time.

21 Colm Roche is a Transition Year student, this is his third musical. He previously starred in Grease and Footloose. He enjoys singing and performed in the Helix earlier this year. Glenda Tigirigi is a fifth year student who is looking forward to participating in her third school musical. In her spare time, she enjoys listening to music and playing guitar. She also has a solo in this year s musical which she is excited about. Alex Brady is a second year student, this is his second musical with the school. He appeared in Crazy For You last year. Alex enjoys doing drama after Bryony Conalty Pullinger Bryony Conalty: Another student making their musical debut is first year student Bryony. Bryony loves participating in Roundwood Variety Group Shows. She also has a Eoin Byrne is a second year student, this is his second musical with the school. He appeared in Crazy For You last year. Eoin is part of a drama group outside of school. Yvonne Prendergast Choreographer This is Yvonne s tenth musical with CCA. Yvonne says that she really loves this job. She s very proud of the school class and says they ve worked extremely hard to get to where they are. She wishes the cast every success Siobhan Gallagher Musical Director This is Siobhan s tenth show with CCA. That s what doing the school musical is all about; developing confidence in young people and helping them make friends across the year groups. She wishes the entire class good luck with the performances in the Mermaid.
