Abby Hutcheson My first Turbo Kick class was a complete accident. Kate and I (yes, of course we were together) thought we were going to Yoga. A lady in line convinced us to stay, promising a great work out. As 16 year olds we were completely embarrassed and awkward, but also totally intrigued by the music, Jennie, and the fun group of people that followed every step. The energy was infectious and we kept going back. That was where my love for group exercise and what I consider my fitness journey started. As a kid and all the way through high school I was an athlete. Soccer, cross country, and gymnastics were my fitness outlets. When I got to college those were no longer options. Luckily, I had found this love of group exercise. I was so excited to try out all the different classes UW-Eau Claire offered! I went to at least 15 different classes the first week to find my favorite instructors and formats. Unfortunately, there was no Turbo Kick. Slowly, I started to gain the freshman 15 (or in my case). Winter break of freshman year I was at my heaviest weight, and feeling extremely self-conscious. So there I was during winter break heading back to Minnesota, and back to the Burnsville YMCA. I got right back into the group exercises classes and loved seeing all the people that had transformed themselves from the last time I was home. That was so motivating to me I knew it was time to lose the weight I had gained. Feeling refreshed and inspired, I went back to UW-Eau Claire for spring semester. As school continued, I became more in tune with living a healthy lifestyle. I continued to go to group exercise classes wishing someone would teach a Turbo Kick class (because let s be real nothing can compare to Turbo!). Finally, one of my friends said, Abby, why don t YOU get certified to teach Turbo and stop complaining? So that s exactly what I did. The Turbo Kick crew at the YMCA probably does not even know how much they inspired me to take the plunge
and become an instructor. I started teaching group exercise on campus, and at surrounding gyms. I became obsessed with teaching classes! I got certified in a couple different formats, and started working in a group exercise department doing some marketing and advertising. In high school, I never would have pictured myself having the guts to do something like that. If it wasn t for that first, accidental Turbo Kick class I never would have become an instructor or started living such a healthy lifestyle. So here I am at age 23 graduated from school, starting a new career and back at the Y where my fitness journey began. Every day I look forward to meeting up with my best friend Kate to take one of our favorite classes! Abby Hutcheson Kate Carlson
Kate Carlson The earliest memories I have involve outdoor activities such as camping and hiking. I am very fortunate to have grown up in a family where we were always busy doing something. The strongest memories of my childhood are family camping trips deep in State Parks, hiking through the woods, up and down the bluffs, and climbing every rock I could reach. I never had to think about staying fit and in shape. I was thrown into every sport imaginable, and thankfully had an older sister who I was always trying to keep up with and compete with in sports. Since an early age I was doing competitive sports year round. It was never an option in my family to NOT be an athlete. Plus, whatever my sister tried, I had to prove that I could keep up with her- I was her ultimate shadow. The summer I turned 15 my mom and uncle decided to coach my soccer team. Like I said, my family is very active so both my uncle and mom had played soccer growing up, and my mom had been a coach for a number of years through school sports. That summer is what kicked off the best years of my life so far. From the age of the same team of girls stayed together, growing up and becoming better athletes together. Still today my best friends are from that soccer team. We had made such a strong connection to each other, and were in a perfect position to challenge each other in every aspect of our lives- school, boys, and sports. My senior year we talked the coach (aka my mom) to let us try different types of practices. For years we have been having practice year round, and would work out at a middle school during the winter months to focus on agility and skills. So anyway, senior year once a week we were allowed to have themed practices instead of our typical practices. We would dress up in 80 s leotards, basketball gear, 50 cent outfits pretty much anything obnoxious we could think of. For these themed practices we would rent workout videos and try them all out together! Billy Blanks became our best friend, leading us through cardio workouts that included music and dance moves. From these practices, a few of us girls became interested in taking different types of classes that we could also have some fun with. I still remember the lady who talked me into taking turbo for the first time. I was with two of my friends at the Y and we originally wanted to take bodyflow? I think?
Something completely different from Turbo Kick, so naturally we were shocked when waiting in line and having everyone else around us looking like they could kick some serious ass. We asked a lady what class was next, and she went into explain Turbo Kick to us. As you all know, it was the best work out I have ever had. Before taking this class I had only workout through sport practices, and occasionally went running with my mom. Learning how to punch, kick, and bouncing around to hip hop music was just what we needed to keep us busy during the summer! My summer before freshman year of college consisted of running, or biking, to the Y to take turbo with my friends, soccer practice, and laying out at the beach. Like I said, I never had to consciously think of working out before. What I did to stay healthy, I did because I thoroughly enjoyed doing it, and I was constantly surrounded by my best friends at practice. It never seemed like a workout to me, it was just what we did when we all hung out together. So when I went to college, I didn t have a plan to stay in shape! I went to UW-Madison for my first two years of college, so I would go for regular runs around the lakes and trails in the town with a friend to explore the area, and assumed all the walking around campus would keep me in shape. Turns out living on cafeteria food, drinking, and barely working out to what I was use to, really packs on the calories! I ended up taking a few work out classes a week with some girls from the dorms, and would go running when I was bored, but I didn t really know anything about what I was doing. About this time my best friend started becoming really interested in working out, eating healthy, and becoming an instructor. My sister was also going through her last two years in college (we both went to UW-Madison together) and she was teaching morning bootcamp classes on campus. Having both of these people in my life so interested and motivated to workout gave me the perfect opportunity to start getting educated in HOW to stay both healthy and fit. By the time I turned 20 I felt like I was getting back in shape like how I was playing soccer all the time. I couldn t go a day without at least a small amount of workout in my schedule. I would even make sure to schedule my classes around the fitness class times so I wouldn t miss anything. I even participated in a few triathlon s and ran in my first half marathon my senior year! I felt great, and was happy with where my body was.
Last fall I went abroad to student teach in England, and my whole fitness routine fell apart. I started off the first two months being abroad going for regular runs after school and on the weekends, but I could tell it just wasn t enough. I didn t have any access to a gym or workout materials so running was the only thing I could think of. As the term went on I became more and more busy with lesson planning and traveling where I wouldn t be working out all week, and only short runs on the weekends. I don t regret anything from when I was abroad because I was traveling and exploring a new country the whole time- but I knew I would have to kick my butt when I got back home. So I did just that! After the holidays I started to look into different workouts and what I could do to get in shape fast. I didn t have a gym membership, but my neighbor introduced me to the work out videos, Insanity. For those of you know don t know what that is, its pretty much P90X on crack. It is minutes of intense circuit training using nothing but an open room and your own body weight. As with every work out video, they soon got boring and I was looking into other workout routines I could try. At the same time my friend graduated and moved back home with me. Since then we have both been motivating each other to workout hard and eat healthy! I got another Y membership a few months ago, and have returned to the life of a gym rat and the endlessly motivating Turbo Kick crew! Without those two influences in my life, I really don t think I would be as healthy and happy with the body I have now. After hearing different stories from people at Turbo, I am so thankful to have so many positive influences in my life. Whenever I splurge and eat too much chocolate ice cream, or have an off day feeling lazy and sluggish, I just remember that its ok to have a down-day every once in a while! The next day just make sure to get up right away in the morning and move around. You can never underestimate how endorphins can change your mood!
