1 Minutes. May 3, 2010 Guest Speaker T. Slade Mr. Timm Slade (Executive Director, Section VI) attended the May meeting to touch base on some key points for the Section VI Meeting that is on May 19, 2010 Modified Reduction Due to fiscal concerns in New York State, with sectional/league approval, up to 50% of the maximum number of games permitted for each modified level sport may be contested as scrimmages during the and school years. Example: Basketball- 14 games permitted, 50% (7) could be scrimmages plus 7 games for a total of 14. Also three additional scrimmages are permitted. Scrimmages must follow all the guidelines in the NYSPHSAA Handbook. Can the large schools not use this method and the small schools can can we break this up? Timm needs to ask Nina that question and get back to the ECIC with an answer. Cheerleading Is Cheerleading going to be considered a sport or no? The State wants to move forward Capping Competitions Need for certification for coaches/advisors Need direction regarding Cheerleading Sportsmanship Coaches will sit out the next contest if they are tossed from a game A scrimmage and a game are treated the same IF the coach is still on school grounds or makes contact by phone they will miss 2 games Wrestling Wrestlers will compete based on a certification weight not a weight class Representation Principals Rep back to the Athletic Council Post card ballot vote Classifications Schools must compete within their sectional classification numbers for all sports except Ice Hockey

2 Officials Timm met with the Presidents of the officials organization 25 officials organizations met with Timm at the BOCES Building Organizations said that they didn t need any new officials Recruiting and the posting of officials will go through the Section VI Office There is an ad in the paper- trying to get people to officiate Contact the Section VI Office so they can track the amount of interest there is to officiate There needs to be a push to get new officials so closed dates are not an issue Nominations for Section VI- May 19 th Meeting President Elect Superintendents Rep Sportsmanship/ Chemical Health Officials Contract Beneficial for everyone State Championships- Williamsville School Districts Parents are paying for their kids to participate in State Championships. Dr. Rusin wanted to know if anyone else is having that issue and if BOCES can help with some reimbursements. Timm Slade will look into this matter and report back- as of right now- mileage is the only reimbursement, and Timm is working on sponsorships. Some examples of the sponsorships are: Time Warner and Citizen Bank to name a few. 3 Division I Jankiewicz/Higgins Boys and Girls basketball not a good idea to play on the same dates There are two dates that are the same- Schools can change off of those dates if needed Cheerleading- should we consider a sport or not a sport Representation on the Activity Board Division I and Division II- there will be a vote at Wednesday s meeting for representation (5/5/10). Division I Chris DeMarco Activity Board Representation Representation is Key- there needs to be representation from Divisions I and II Modified Scrimmages- good / bad Divisional Alignments- The schools should align when possible (example: boys and girls soccer) Division III Brian Hickson Start dates next year- Fall-Winter-Spring Located on the Section VI website Athletic Council Meeting- should be 6 or 7 days after the Athletic Directors meeting- just in case something comes up Discussion at Wednesday s meeting (5/5/10) Budgets- worried about what may get cut Personnel, Curriculum, Sports- bottom line its up to each Superintendents from the school districts Division IV Keith Lewis Reduction of Modified Scrimmages- not much cost savings Consolidate your sports when you can- boys and girls basketball share the same bus Athletic Director s coming and going- who is going to be in the office to contact? 4 If you have your drafts sooner please fax them over to the Office The Office will need Modified Dates by May 14 th - Activity Board volunteered to help the Office and giving us the dates Schedules for the Fall Modified will be ed to everyone after the budget votes Patches- Spring Divisional Winners please lmoore@e1b.org with the count and sport please be gender specific Activity Board Beetow/Thornley The directors need to get together and come up with yearly thoughts so a timeline can be put together Timeline will be discussed at the June Meeting The timeline will consists of the function of the Activity Board- so the new members wont be confused when they take over a position Nominations for the Activity Board- Girls AB- Len Jankiewicz- (Div I)- Boys AB- Jim Higgins- (Div I) Girls AB- Kevin Lester- (Div II) Boys AB- Chris Mucica- (Div II) The new nominees please show up early to the June Activity Board meeting so you can see how the process works Bobbi Meyer (JFK) will come up with a possible Rotation for the June meeting Old Business Restructuring the ECIC G. Kaszubski Meeting April 28 th at Sweet Home 20 Athletic Directors participated in the discussion Timelines will be created so there will be a process on how the ECIC does business- starting with the Activity Boards Changing the dates of the Athletic Council Meeting to be a week after the Athletic Directors Meetings Proposed Meeting Dates for Section VI Athletic Council Meeting Sept 22, Nov 17, Jan 19, March 23, May 18- voted on May 19 th at the Section Meeting Example- Athletic Directors meeting will be Nov. 3- Athletic Council Nov. 10 and Section VI meeting Nov. 17 Moving the Athletic Council meeting a week after the Athletic Directors meeting is possible if that s what everyone wants Please read the minutes the Leane ed over regarding the Restructuring Meeting Big step- coming up with a plan on April 28 th and implementing it at the Athletic Directors meeting

5 New Business New Modified Track Sports Chair Jaime Monaco from Starpoint stepping down and Emilio Mancino from West Seneca West will be taking over next Spring Basketball Issue Next years schedule looks like there will be 2 dates that are the same for both boys and girls basketball- if you need to make a switch make the change Modified Scrimmage Proposal Run the first half of the modified for educational purposes and not worry about the clock, and then the second half of the schedule let them play How would we get our modified programs back? Should wait till after the budget votes to see what happens What are the other leagues doing regarding modified programs? Other Sections are losing their modified programs it s a way to save their programs Why vote no? Need to have options Need a Clarification on what a scrimmage is Greg is going to call Nina to get more input and to get the definition of a scrimmage Can ½ the league participate and the other ½ not if they are struggling Workshop a new way to look at a cost savings way to help modified programs because once its gone, its gone- wont get it back Talk to your Superintendents so they understand the concept of the proposal Wednesday s meeting (5/5/10) the ECIC will direct our Section Reps on how to vote at the Section level Section News Officials Contract: Key points to the Officials Contract that will be voted on May 19 th C. 6 Baseball/Softball (JV Level) umpire umpire umpires IF you would like 2 umpires- 2 umpires can be requested Cross Country Invitational s from 3 to 2 officials Sectionals from 22 to 11 officials Football The C and D schools will have their 5 th official during week # 8 automatically Swimming From 3 to 2 officials 3 officials can be requested if needed League Championships from 7/14 to 5/12 Why do we need lane timers? If the Board malfunctions, we can save ourselves the cost of 7 officials if we didn t use lane timers! Track and Field League Championships- maximum 25 to 16 Sectionals- maximum 30 to 20 *** Schools need to request when they would like 2 officials on Modified Field Hockey prior to assigning or on JV Baseball/Softball prior to assigning***same with Swimming if you want 3 officials you may request to have 3 officials at your meet*** The use of linespeople for Girls Volleyball Boys Volleyball still has linespeople Talk to your coaches and be prepared Wednesday to give our Section Reps direction for the May 19 th Section Meeting Section VI Constitution, Bylaws and Policy Handout Mr. Amo will look the handout over and see how much actually changed and will report back at Wednesday s meeting Strengths of having the Principals Rep back to the Athletic Council They would support the Athletic Department Benefit to add back the position at the State Level from out Section

7 Need all the support the Athletic Department can get The Principal Rep would be pro-kid and pro-interscholastic Good of the Order 5 th Special Ed kid- has anything changed nothing has changed Pre-registration for the football combine. Combine will be May 15 at the Stadium at 6pm Please be aware that students and parents are getting ripped off through the use of soliciting while recruiting.
