2 MUSICAL SYNOPSIS In our story, a convict, Jean Valjean, has an opportunity for redemption due to the compassion and generosity of a man of mercy: the bishop. As a result of this chance encounter, Valjean decides to abandon his old identity and start a new life in a new town. There, he becomes a respected factory owner, the mayor, and a solid pillar of the community. No matter how hard he tries, however, his past, and the police officer who has searched for him tirelessly, will not fade away into the dusk. As Valjean flees from his past and Inspector Javert, he makes a promise to protect the child, Cosette, of a dying woman named Fantine. Valjean then devotes his life to protecting this child and giving her the life her mother deserved. On his journey to redemption, Valjean along with Cosette are drawn into the world of 1832 Paris. There, a young group of students and rebels fight to protect the poor and the workers of Paris and create a new era, an era of justice and freedom. 4 DIRECTOR S NOTES I can still remember the night that I had the privilege of watching Les Miserables for the first time. I was studying abroad in London. It was a rainy night of course it was. I purchased students tickets, found my obstructed view seat on the orchestra floor and waited for the show to begin. From the moment the music started, I was transported to another world. Here was a world of glaring injustice, a world where the poor were left to fend for themselves, a world where the lowly were at the mercy of the strong; but even in this world, I found moments to laugh, moments to cheer for the efforts of the brave and just, and moments to hope. I was so deeply moved during this performance, even with my terrible seat, that I wanted to see the show again and again. I have been fortunate enough to see the show several times since that fateful London evening, but one of the most memorable times was when I returned to my own high school to see their production, Les Miserables. I was blown away. I couldn t believe that a high school, that my high school, could honor the story of Les Miserables in such a powerful way. It was on that day that I started looking for the perfect group of students to bring this incredible show, this powerful story, this moving experience to Whitefish Bay High School. At this time, I would like to take a moment to recognize the incredible students who made this dream a reality. First, I humbly thank the crew for the time, effort, passion, and talent they ve given to this production. Without their efforts, we would all be sitting in the dark, our actors naked with no props to use or set pieces present to create the world of 19 th century France. Next, I would like to thank the pit for the countless hours spent producing such incredible music. I know that when the curtain rises you start and do not stop until intermission. Then you repeat this process for act two thank you for those tireless efforts! Finally, I want to thank the actors for the many hours they have put into creating such a powerful, moving show, the energy they provided night after night to commit to these complex characters and bring their story to life, and most importantly the kindness and humor that made this entire experience amazing. A special note to seniors from cast, crew, and pit: I cannot express how much I will miss all of you when you graduate because of the incredible talent you ve selflessly given to our theatre family throughout your time here. Your hard work, dedication, and love of the theatre inspire us all. Thank you Thank you Thank you!!! People oftentimes use the phrase it takes a village. This has never been truer for Whitefish Bay than it has been with this production. At the end of last year s musical, I realized that Whitefish Bay High School was finally ready to take on Les Miserables. Once I realized we were ready, we got to work finding a team willing to put in far too many hours, far too much of their passion, and far too much commitment to bring this production to life. Because of this, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to my colleagues for their incredible contributions to this production. We could have never put on this show without the amazing technical, vocal, pit, and dance gurus who shared so much of their time, talent and passion with us all I feel humbled and honored to work with each of you. I cannot imagine this show without you and your extraordinary contributions. I also want to thank the parents who have given so much of their time to support the success of this show. As a parent of a 2 ½ year old, I am in awe of each of you who stand as inspiring models of what selfless love, creativity, and hard work can produce. Finally, I would like to thank my husband, my son, and my family for their love and support throughout this musical process and each theatrical endeavor I embrace mind, body, and soul! Now, please, sit back, relax, and get ready to be moved as we travel back to 19 th century France with Les Miserables. 4 Whitefish Bay High School

Damini Rao (Little Cosette, 18) is excited to be playing the role of Little Cosette in Les Miserables, one of her favorite musicals of all time! As well as serving on stage crew for multiple WFBHS plays and musicals, she has also performed as Cinderella in the fall production of Into the Woods. She would like to thank her amazing cast, crew, pit, and directors for their dedication to Les Mis, but most of all, she wants to thank her parents for their never ending support. Van Rao (Marius, 17) is very excited about playing the part of Marius in WFB s production of Les Miserables. He feels extremely fortunate to be working with such intelligent and talented people. Besides Les Miserables, Van has participated in other theater productions such as Charlie Brown, Spelling Bee, and this year s fall musical Into the Woods. He has put a lot of work into this production and admires all the work put in from his fellow actors, crew members, and pit. He would like to thank the directors and all of the people behind-the-scenes for their commitment. He would also like to thank his mother and father who have always supported him through everything. Evan Schallack (Thenardier, 18) is positively tickled pink to be Thenardier in Whitefish Bay High School s production of Les Miserables. You might have seen him in the complete works of William Shakespeare Abridged, Grease as well as many other Whitefish Bay shows. Ever since infancy, Evan knew he was destined to be Thenardier and would like to thank K2 for making his extremely early childhood dreams come true. He would also like to thank his family for putting up with Evan singing Les Miserables songs constantly. 18 Whitefish Bay High School

19 BIOGRAPHIES c o n t. John Strasheim (Joly, 17) is thrilled to be a part of his final show at Whitefish Bay High School. Being a part of musicals every year of high school has created longlasting memories he won t soon forget. He would like to thank his directors for all they have done for this cast and crew both this year and in prior years. He would also like to thank his family and friends who have supported him every year. Sydney Smith (Crew, 17) is over the moon (and probably a bit past Pluto, which is a planet, by now) to be participating in this production of Les Miserables. Sydney has worked on a multitude of shows since her freshman year, doing lighting for half of them, which is a part of theatre she is very passionate about. Sydney would like to thank her fabulous crew and directors for making this last musical a memorable one, and working so incredibly hard to make it the best that it can be. She would also like to thank her parents for dealing with the late hours and crew days on the weekends and doing many loads of black laundry over the years. Finally, Sydney would like to thank gaff tape, for, through all the stress of shows, managing to hold it all together; it really is the true unsung MVP of the show. Ellie Taft (Cast, 17) is so beyond excited to be a part of Whitefish Bay High School s Les Misérables cast. This is only her second Whitefish Bay High School show, but you may have previously seen her in numerous musicals at First Stage Children s Theater, including her iconic role as a melon (confirmed Ellie was type-cast as a melon). Ellie would like to thank all the directors, cast and crew for this amazing experience and her family and friends (and boyfriend Aaron Rodgers) for all their support along the way. Alec Wellenstein (Courfeyrac, 18) is awake and ready to be in Les Mis! He has been in WFBHS s Grease and was a member of the state bound one act The Complete Works of Shakespeare Abridged. Outside of school, he has been in First Stage s Big Nate, Holes, and Jackie and Me. Alec loves theatre along with biking, Wisconsin weather, and a good burger. He hopes you have a grand time at the show! Les Miserables 19
