1 HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS (AND FALL FESTIVALS) IN SHERIDAN AREA (events open to the public, and free unless otherwise noted) STARTING THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13 The Great Jack-O -Lantern Contest through October 31 (with voting November 1-4) It is that time of year again when families are decorating their pumpkins for Halloween. But did you know that you can win $250 in Chamber Bucks just by entering photos of your pumpkin masterpieces? Just carve, paint, or decorate your pumpkin and post a photo of the pumpkin in The Great Jack-O -Lantern Contest on sheridanmedia.com as many entries you like, by Monday, October 31. (Must be age 13 or older to participate.) Then online voting will start November 1, with the winner announced on November 4. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14 SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15 Full Moon Fort at Fort Phil Kearny (Banner) 6:00-7:30 pm; 8:00-11:00 pm Fort Phil Kearny, 528 Wagon Box Road (Exit 44 off I-90), Banner Follow your guide into 1866 Wyoming, where The Grimms Brothers tales became all too real minute guided lantern tours of the fort grounds, narration of the spookier side of the Fort s history, and fun and freaky facts about soldier and native daily life this year delivered by professional writers and actors in professional makeup from Sheridan s Trident Theatre. And, of course, you can t beat the power of the fort grounds in full moonlight it s a spooky place! Two types of tours the light tours (in the daylight) from 6:00-7:30 pm, with somewhat gentler narration, and the dark tours (in the dark) from 8:00-11:00 pm, with all the grizzly detail! The size of each tour group is limited; the light tours will be firstcome, first served, but advance reservations are recommended for the dark tours. The light tour is $5 per carload. The dark tour is $10 per adult, free for age 17 and under (but not recommended for children under age 14). 2 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20 Fall Festival & Chili Cook-Off (Story) 5:30-7:00 pm Story Elementary School, 103 Fish Hatchery Road in Story Fall festival for the whole Sheridan County community. Family games and activities, including face painting, pumpkin glow ring toss, cakewalk (feel free to bring a cake to donate to the cakewalk). Special event is the chili cook-off ($25 entry), a fundraiser for the school. Everything is free, but donations to the Story PTO will be gratefully accepted. Alger Story: It was never just a game. Inviting audiences again into the lore of the spirit board, Ouija: Origin of Evil tells a terrifying new tale as the follow-up to 2014's sleeper hit that opened at number one. In 1965 Los Angeles, a widowed mother and her two daughters add a new stunt to bolster their séance scam business and unwittingly invite authentic evil into their home. When the youngest daughter is overtaken by the merciless spirit, this small family confronts unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side. Rated PG-13. Lots of surprises and, of course, candy. $5 for age 8 and over, $3 for age 7 and under (no charge for adults accompanying younger children). For more information, call Chris Johnston at SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29 Morning Mayhem Halloween 6K Race & Spooky Sprint 8:30-10:30 am Meet at Sheridan Recreation District Office, 1579 Thorne-Rider Drive (off 11th St.) Morning Mayhem Halloween 6K race, The Spooky Spring 1-mile Kids Run, and the 1-Mile Halloween Walk! Prizes for best adult male and female costume, best kids boys and girls costume, and overall male and female race winner. The start/finish is outside the Sheridan Recreation District office in Thorne-Rider Park, with the course looping around North Park. On-site registration only, starting at 8:30 am, with the run/walks starting at 9:00 am. $6 for adults, $4 for kids 18 and under, or $8 for a pair or $10 for a family - cash only. Sheridan Jaycees Downtown Halloween Parade 10:00-11:30 am Meet outside City Hall, 55 Grinnell Plaza The Sheridan Jaycees will be taking the kids trick or treating to the downtown businesses. 4 SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29 (cont d) Pet-O-Ween 10:00 am 12:00 pm Kendrick Park 16th Annual Pet Costume Contest at the Kendrick Park band shell. This year again we really have a two-part event, and registration for both opens at 10:00 am. Starting at 10:30 am: a pet-owner walk/run (two laps around the park) costumes not required for this. $5 registration fee per pet, with each walker also receiving a free clip-on dog baggie holder. Prizes awarded by a drawing. The main event the costume contest starts at 11:00 am. Bring your costumed pet and compete for prizes in four categories Best Pet-Owner Costume combination, Best Dog Costume, Best Cat Costume, Most Unique Pet Costume. Entry fee for the costume competition is $5 per pet, and each contestant receives a free gift bag. Also enter the bucket raffles for many other prizes. Then stay around for a hot dog and pop lunch! A really fun, family time (and great photo opportunity!), for the entrants and spectators alike. All proceeds go to the benefit of the Dog & Cat Shelter. Then we ll send all of the candy to Operation Gratitude, an organization that will make individual holiday packages for our troops and ship them overseas to our soldiers stationed in war zones.
