2 A Message from the Consul General In June, I made my third trip to Jacksonville to host the JUMP (Japan-U.S. Military Program) event in Naval Air Station Jacksonville. The event brought together more than 150 US service members and families who were stationed at US bases in Japan. We are lucky to have so many US service members who come back from Japan and continue to promote our friendship. I then traveled west to Tallahassee to attend a dinner hosted by Ken Okaniwa Consul General of Japan in Miami Governor Rick Scott at his Mansion. It was a good opportunity to update the Governor about new developments in Japan- Florida relations. This was my fourth visit to the State capital. I always feel homesick there because of the hilly streets that are common in Japan but never in South Florida. On June 21, I was invited to speak at the 2017 Annual Convention of the Florida Association of Broadcasters. The broadcasters were interested to find out about Florida's notso-well-known links with Japan. I will work with them to promote understanding about the importance of relations with Japan. For my American friends, July fourth is a time of celebration. May I express my sincere congratulations! The Consulate also has an important occasion to celebrate in July. For the first time in history, the Japan Maritime Self- Defense Force (JMSDF) Training Squadron will visit Port Everglades on July 21. Through this visit, I hope to promote understanding of and support to the Japan-US Alliance among the people of Florida. Traditionally, lanterns are hung in front of houses to guide the ancestors' spirits, obon dances (bon odori) are performed, graves are visited and food offerings are made at house altars and temples. At the end of Obon, floating lanterns are put into rivers, lakes and seas in order to guide the spirits back into their world. This introductory course will examine both pre-modern aspects of Japanese Spirituality, drawing on textual as well as non-textual material, mainly audio-visual but also pictographic material to evaluate the current state of religious life. 8 40th Annual Joint Meeting of the Southeast U.S.-Japan & Japan- U.S. Southeast Associations October 22-24, 2017 Hyatt Regency Greensville, South Carolina Governor Rick Scott has been invited to officially lead the Florida Delegation to the 40th Annual Joint Meeting. SEUS member state governors/head of delegations, senior officials of the U.S. and Japan will attend, for a total attendance of participants. The program will include presentations by top business, economic development and government leaders. The Japanese Ambassador to the U.S. is confirmed to serve as the keynote speaker this year. Florida Delegation will hold its annual meeting of members on the afternoon of Sunday, October 22, in conjunction with the joint meeting, and Japanese Consul General Ken Okaniwa has been invited to provide remarks.
