1 Florida State Junior Thespian Official Rule Book Official Rules for all Middle School District and State Thespian Festivals for School Year Please send questions, corrections and ideas to

2 Florida State Junior Thespian Definition of Terms One Act Plays Each active Junior Thespian troupe is invited to produce a One Act Play to represent their school at their local District Festival each year. Qualifying One Act Plays may go on to perform at the annual FSJT State Festival. Individual Events Individual Events are performance and technical events that students from each troupe may enter into competition at their local District Festival. Each troupe may create its own criteria for deciding which students will represent their school in Individual Events. Each District has its own formula for deciding how many Individual Events a troupe may bring to its local District Festival, and in how many Individual Events a student from that troupe may participate. This formula is based on the size of both the District and the limitations of the venue in which it hosts these events. Qualifying Individual Events from each District are invited to perform at the annual FSJT State Festival. Florida State Junior Thespians currently allows each troupe to register up to 8 superiorranked Performance Events and up to 4 superior-ranked Technical Events. (In the event a troupe does not have enough superior-ranked events to fill this slate, exceptions can be made for up to four excellent-rated events to attend the FSJT State Festival.) Performance event categories are: Monologue, Duet Acting, Ensemble Acting, Solo Musical, Duet Musical, Small Group Musical, Large Group Musical, Pantomime, and Improvisation. Technical event categories are: Set Design, Costume Design, Marketing/Publicity Design, Scene Writing, and Makeup Design. Our Rules The Florida State Junior Thespian Rule Book is updated at the beginning of each school year by the FSJT Board, and maintained throughout the year by the State Chair. Please inform the State Chair if you feel that the rules at any level of competition are not being accurately followed, the incorrect adjudication forms are being used, if you see errors in the rule book, or if you have good ideas for improving our rules. 3 ONE ACT PLAY EVENT ENTRIES Only one entry per troupe at the District level is permitted. A one act play must receive an excellent or superior rating at the District level to be eligible as a State-selected play. The number of one acts permitted to showcase at the State Festival will be determined by the following schedule: 1-6 plays from affiliated schools performed at District (1 play) 7-12 plays from affiliated schools performed at District (2 plays) plays from affiliated schools performed at District (3 plays) plays from affiliated schools performed at District (4 plays) 26 or more plays from affiliated schools performed at District (5 plays) SCENERY All Stock Set Pieces will be provided at the District and State Festival. If you wish to purchase or build any or all of the stock pieces for your own rehearsal purposes, go to: At the Festival, every troupe must use the Stock Set Pieces provided by the Festival. The following Stock Set Pieces will be provided for use at District and State Level Assessments: (2) 4 x8 platforms, 1-0 high (2) 4 x4 platforms, 1-0 high (4) 1 x1 platforms, 1-0 high (2) 2' unit steps (6 risers and 12 treads) (2) 4' unit steps (6 risers and 12 treads) (2) 4' ramp (rises to 1-0 ) (2) 4 pylons (1-0 square) (2) 6' pylons (1-0 square) (2) 8' pylons (1-0 square) (6) 16"x16"x16" cubes-weight bearing (1) 6' standard folding table (1) folded card table (16) armless chairs NO additional furniture may be used (chairs, tables, hat racks, carts, trees, etc.). A troupe may use and/or add props and set dressing (fabric pieces, cushions, lamps, rugs, books) as they wish. At their assigned dressing room start time, troupes must bring to the dressing room area all costumes, props, set dressing, and make-up. [NOTE: There will be no 6 x9 box backstage.]

4 STAGE MANAGER MEETING The entire cast and crew may be on stage during the stage manager meeting (at a time to be announced prior to the Festival.) ONLY official troupe directors and registered cast and crew are permitted backstage at any time. NO CHAPERONES. SPIKING THE STAGE Following the stage manager meeting, troupe directors and their student stage managers may have 30 minutes to spike the stage using color-coded spike tape supplied by the Festival Staff. During one act spike time, no set pieces may be brought onstage. SET UP The Stock Set Pieces will be pre-set backstage in a row. Troupes may move to the stage any and all Stock Set Pieces they choose to use at Five Minutes. Any and all Stock Set Pieces must be restored to the pre-set backstage location before "clear" will be called. TIME LIMIT The time limit for the one act performance is 40 minutes. Troupes are also allotted 5 minutes to set the stage with the Stock Set Pieces and their own additional materials. Technical crew members and actors may also move to places at this time. The five minutes begins and ends at the direction of the Festival Stage Manager (FSM). The FSM will confirm that the troupe is at places and announce Troupe 88XXX may begin to start the play and official timekeeping. "Clear" will be called when the entire set is moved back to the pre-set position and the actors have moved to the wings. TECH Students must run all technical portions of the one act. The student stage manager may call cues from backstage or a tech booth located front-of-house. Each school must supply a student light crew member and sound crew member (if sound is used.) All troupe directors are allowed to run sound/light boards for the one act event if they request this from the State Director in advance and if the rented venue allows it. The Sound and Light Plot for the venue will be provided to the State Selected plays two weeks prior to the Festival. LIGHTING AT STATE: There will be 6 main areas of light: DSL/DC/DSR and USL/UC/USR; along with complete stage washes in two colors: one warm/one cool. AT DISTRICTS: Stage Lighting will be provided based on the limitation of the available venue. SOUND AT STATE: There will be a sound system to include a minimum of: one hand held microphone, a CD/MP3 player and communications system (3 headsets.) AT DISTRICTS: Stage Sound will be provided based on the limitation of the available venue. SPECIAL EFFECTS The use of smoke, fire, candles, fog effect, haze, or flame of any kind is prohibited. No fly system or follow spot may be used. An electrical outlet will be available stage left and stage right. Properly rated extension cords must be provided by the troupe.

5 COSTUMES AND MAKEUP No costumes or makeup may be applied before entering the dressing room. Up to three designated adults may be present in the dressing room, but not in the backstage area during performance time. NO CHAPERONES ARE ALLOWED BACKSTAGE AT ANY TIME. CAST AND CREW The cast and crew must be the same that performed at District Festival. Extenuating circumstances should be referred to the State Director at the State Level. DIRECTORS One act plays must be directed by the troupe director or a troupe member. No troupe director may have communication with the performing troupe once the official time has begun. SELECTION OF MATERIAL Troupe directors must select material for festival that they would willingly perform in a public forum in their own districts and that is acceptable to their school principal. NOTE: There is a one-year moratorium on plays presented at the district and state level the previous year. (Posted on the State website) PROGRAMS All one acts must bring five copies of their printed program to the stage manager meeting which will be provided to the judges. The program must list complete names of cast members and characters as well as crew and their positions. The program s purpose is to frame the production for the judges and to clearly identify individual students. School names as well as advertisements may appear in the program. Programs may be provided by the troupe to audience members at the performance. JUDGES There will be a minimum of four judges at every level of competition: 3 judges in the house observing the actual performance and at least one judge to monitor all technical aspects. Oral Critique will follow each play for cast/crew and troupe directors only. No other adult will be allowed in this area. JUDGES DECISION Decisions of the judges are final. Judges do not disqualify. Disqualifications will be the decision of the District Chair at the District level and the State Director at the State level. BACKSTAGE SUPERVISION Chaperones are not permitted in the backstage areas at any time. ONLY official troupe directors and registered cast and crew are permitted backstage at any time.

6 S: GENERAL NOTICE: Students will NOT be allowed to use adult language in any performance at the District or State Level. The piece will be disqualified from competition, a letter will be sent to the school principal if this occurs. This is not a negotiable point. The Rules 1. A slate, or introduction, is required for each performance piece and MUST include ONLY the entrant's name(s), title of selection, and troupe number. Do not give the name of school or other information. The official time for the event will start after the mention of the troupe number. (Example: "My name is John Doe. I will sing "Music of the Night" from Phantom of the Opera." I am from Troupe #1234.) 2. No student may enter the same Individual Event category twice. 3. The number of entries and events allowed per troupe and per student in the Individual Events Competition will be determined annually by the State Board. Each District may set its own number of entries and events for its local festival, based upon the size of the District and the limitations of the venue where the Festival is held. 4. Students are not allowed to wear clothing that displays their school's name, school's initials or any identification of their troupe apart from the troupe number. Students may wear clothing that displays their District number. This applies to ALL Individual Events. 5. Students receiving a Superior rating at the District level are eligible to perform at the State level. Final selection will be the troupe director s decision. (In the event a troupe does not have enough superior-ranked events to fill this slate, exceptions can be made for up to four excellent-rated events to attend the FSJT State Festival.) 6. No changes or additions after registration deadline. There may be financial penalties at both the District and State Festival for changed or dropped events. 7. All Individual Events presented at State Festival must be the same title and cutting, with the same participants, that received an Excellent/Superior at District Festival. Any exceptions to this rule require a written request to the State Director two weeks prior to the Festival. 8. The troupe director is responsible for insuring that the material is appropriate for presentation in a public forum at their own middle school. The principal will be asked to certify that the material chosen meets the community standards of the school and community. 9. No costumes may be used. Costumes are defined as clothing which is unique to the character(s) in the specific play, scene, and/or musical number (EXAMPLE: 1950's style clothing for a scene from Grease.); or clothing that helps to establish information about the character(s) (i.e. mood, personality, period, etc.) in the specific play, scene and/or musical number (EXAMPLE: mismatched clothing or "nerd" clothing for The Nerd.) Dance clothing (leotards, tights, dance skirts, sweats, etc.) may be worn UNLESS they would be covered under the description listed above. 10. Props and accessories may be used if they are an integral part of the blocking and/or choreography.

7 COSTUME DESIGN CHOICE OF PLAYS The student may choose any play from the list announced by the State Board of Directors each September on the Florida State Junior Thespian web page. 1. The student must present three (3) character renderings. These may represent three (3) different characters and/or may follow a single character through several appropriate changes. 2. Computer aided design is NOT acceptable. 3. Each design must be executed in full color AND displayed on a 10" x 15" white display board. The display board cannot be mounted on any other surface. All figures must be 10" tall. The base of the figure should be 3" from the lower edge of the board. A human figure may be traced to use as a template upon which a costume creation may then be placed. Tracing of a costume outline or silhouette is unacceptable. 4. The board should be labeled in the following manner: Upper Left hand corner: Name of the show and author. Upper Right hand corner: Name of the character, act, and scene. Lower Right hand corner: Student's name and troupe number. 5. The student must attach fabric swatches, measuring a minimum of 2"x2", by the top edge of the swatch only to the same board on which the figure is drawn. Mount the swatch so that it may be lifted up and felt in order to evaluate appropriate fabric texture, draping ability, weight, grain, etc. 6. The student must present a justification of the designs. Note cards may be used. 7. Only one student may be involved in the set of designs. NO COLLABORATION. 8. All artwork used must be the original work of the entrant. 9. The event will not exceed ten (10) minutes. The student presentation is not to exceed five (5) of these ten (10) minutes. COSTUME DISCUSSION SUGGESTIONS In your five-minute presentation you should be able to discuss the following: 1. Set the play - Discuss time period, place, and mood. 2. Establish the character- Discuss character traits, age, gender, class, occupation, and/or a character's purpose in the play. 3. Justify the designs- Be prepared to defend ideas with proper, established research. Talk about sources of information. 4. Define social influences- Point out styles that were popular during the time period. Discuss any laws or limitations that might influence fashion choices or the use of accessories. Discuss the social role the character plays. 5. Discuss fabric and color choices - Discuss fabrics and colors that were popular and/or available during the appropriate time period. Discuss fabrics and colors that are

8 appropriate for the character. Discuss fabrics and colors and how they translate onto the stage. Materials must be drawn from published plays written for the theater or a published scene anthology. 3. Poetry, fiction, screenplays, and lyrics will not be allowed. 4. No costumes will be worn. 5. Hand props may be used if integral to the scene. Integral is defined as a prop that is physically used by the actor. 6. Not to exceed five (5) minutes. MATERIALS Each room will be provided with 5 sturdy, straight-backed, armless chairs, and one 4x4 card type table, which will not support standing weight. This is the only permissible furniture.

9 DUET MUSICAL THEATER 1. Two students will participate 2. The selection must be drawn from published musicals written for the theater. No original works, medleys, or screenplays are allowed. The selection may contain dialogue and both participants must be actively involved in the musical selection. 3. All material should be presented as if within the context of the performance of the play. 4. The performers MUST use non-vocal musical accompaniment which can be live or taped. 5. No costumes may be worn. 6. Hand props may be used if integral to the scene. Integral is defined as a prop that is physically used by the actor. 7. Not to exceed five (5) minutes. MATERIALS 1. Each room will be provided with 2 sturdy, straight-backed, armless chairs, and one 4x4 card type table, which will not support standing weight. This is the only permissible furniture. 2. If you wish to use a recorded track, we will provide a set of speakers and an auxiliary cable you may use to plug into your portable device. You are welcome to bring your own CD player or ipod dock. 3. A piano or electric keyboard will be provided. 4. A hard surface floor may not be provided. ENSEMBLE ACTING 1. Three to eight actors may participate. 2. The material must be drawn from published plays written for the theater or a published scene anthology. 3. Poetry, fiction, screenplays, and lyrics will not be allowed. 4. No costumes may be worn. 5. Hand props may be used if integral to the scene. Integral is defined as a prop that is physically used by the actor. 6. Not to exceed five (5) minutes. MATERIALS Each room will be provided with 8 sturdy, straight-backed, armless chairs, and one 4x4 card type table, which will not support standing weight. This is the only permissible furniture.

10 IMPROVISATION 1. Two performers will receive a prompt from the judges table immediately following the student's introduction which ends with their troupe number. 2. Time will start once the prompts are in the actors hands. 3. The students have up to 5 minutes from the time they get the prompt to the end of their performance. 4. Any material that is not audience appropriate (i.e. language and adult content) is not allowed. 5. The Time Keeper s hand will go up at 4:45 as a visual warning for time. 6. The scene ends when time is called by the Time Keeper or when the actors call scene. Material provided in the room: Two sturdy chairs. 11 LARGE GROUP MUSICAL THEATER 1. Eight to sixteen performers may participate. 2. The selection must be drawn from published musicals written for the theater. No original works, medleys, or screenplays are allowed. The selection may contain dialogue and each participant must be actively involved in the musical selection. 3. All material should be presented as if within the full context of the performance of the play. 4. The performer MUST use non-vocal musical accompaniment which can be live or taped. 5. No costumes may be worn. 6. Hand props may be used if integral to the scene. Integral is defined as a prop that is physically used by the actor. 7. Not to exceed five (5) minutes. MATERIALS 1. Each room will be provided with 16 sturdy, straight-backed, armless chairs, and one 4x4 card type table, which will not support standing weight. This is the only permissible furniture. 2. If you wish to use a recorded track, we will provide a set of speakers and an auxiliary cable you may use to plug into your portable device. You are welcome to bring your own CD player or ipod dock. 3. A piano or electric keyboard will be provided. 4. A hard surface floor will be provided.

12 MAKEUP DESIGN CHOICE OF PLAYS The student may choose any play from the list announced by the State Board of Directors each September on the Florida State Junior Thespian web page. 1. Student must present three renderings which can represent three different characters and/or the same character through several appropriate changes. For the purpose of this assessment, hair and teeth are considered makeup. 2. Each rendering must be executed in full color AND displayed on a 10" x 15" white display board. The display board cannot be mounted on any other surface. All faces must be 10" from top of the head to the chin. The base of the figure should be 3" from the lower edge of the board. A human face may be traced and/or used as a template upon which the makeup design may then be demonstrated. Each design should be the student s own work. 3. The board should be labeled in the following manner: Upper Left hand corner: Name of the show and author. Upper Right hand corner: Name of the character, act, and scene. Lower Right hand corner: Student's name and troupe number. 4. Each design should be accompanied by typed directions for applying the makeup using a 3- dimensional technique and a concept statement that should include script references, revealing how the design reinforces the traits of the character and how the design utilizes the use of highlight and shadow. If research is involved, indicate the sources. 5. Only one student may be involved in creating the designs. No collaboration is permitted. 6. The student must present a justification of the designs. Note cards may be used. MAKEUP DISCUSSION SUGGESTIONS 1. Interpretation Does the design visually reinforce the mood, style, character and theme of the play? 2. Execution Are renderings executed with precision, clarity and attention to the human form? 3. Presentation Is the designer able to justify the significant design elements in terms of characters and script used? 13 MONOLOGUE 1. Students will perform ONE selection. 2. Materials must be drawn from published plays written for the theater or a published monologue anthology. 3. Poetry, fiction, screenplays, and lyrics will not be allowed. 4. Only one character may be used. 5. The selection may not exceed (3) three minutes. 6. No costumes may be used. 7. Hand props may be used if integral to the scene. Integral is defined as a prop that is physically used by the actor. MATERIALS Only three sturdy, straight-backed, armless chairs will be provided, and these are the only permissible furniture.

14 MARKETING/PUBLICITY DESIGN CHOICE OF PLAYS The student may choose any play from the list announced by the State Board of Directors each September on the Florida State Junior Thespian web page. 1. The following materials are to be presented: a. Flyer design on 8 ½ X 11 paper b. ticket design c. program design and full layout of 4 pages d. a press release e. a proposal for a promotional project to be completed within the individual school. f. a budget for the publicity campaign and justification of expenses. You will be judged on NOT how much you spend but how you spend it. 2. Computer aided design is acceptable. 3. The student must present justifications of the designs. Note cards may be used. 4. Only one student may be involved in the design. NO COLLABORATION. 5. All logos used must be the original work of the entrant. 6. The event will not exceed ten (10) minutes. The student presentation is not to exceed five (5) of these ten (10) minutes. 7. A bibliography is required documenting all resources used including but not limited to written and electronic sources. 15 PANTOMIME 1. One to eight performers are allowed. 2. No props or costumes. 3. No theatrical makeup. 4. No lip syncing or audible sounds by the performer. 5. Not to exceed five minutes. 6. There are to be no lyrics in any music selection. 7. This pantomime must be the original creation of the student(s). MATERIALS 1. Eight sturdy, straight-backed, armless chairs will be provided. This will be the only permissible furniture. 2. A hard surface floor will be provided. 3. If you wish to use a recorded track, we will provide a set of speakers and an auxiliary cable you may use to plug into your portable device. You are welcome to bring your own CD player or ipod dock.

16 SCENE WRITING 1. The script must be the work of one or two students. If a collaborative effort, both must attend the adjudication. 2. The text must contain dialogue and have two characters ONLY. 3. Script length must be a minimum of (3) TEXT pages and a maximum of (5) TEXT pages. 4. When submitting a scene at the state level, the troupe director must upload a PDF file of the script to the registration website during the registration window. Late or ed submissions will not be accepted, as our scene writing judges receive the scripts through the website when the registration window closes. 5. All printed text must be in the Courier font. FORMAT 1. The first page of the script will be the TITLE PAGE, including information relating to the title, playwright(s), troupe director, troupe number, school address, and completion date, and will be arranged according to the Florida State Thespian guidelines. 2. The second page of the script will be the SYNOPSIS PAGE, including information relating to the title, playwright(s), character breakdown (male/ female), and a forty- to sixty-word summary of the play, and will be arranged according to the Florida State Junior Thespian guidelines. 3. The third page of the script will be the CHARACTER PAGE, including an alphabetized list of the two characters, and will be arranged according to the Florida State Junior Thespian guidelines. 4. The fourth and successive pages of the script will be the TEXT PAGES, and will include only the actual scene and will be arranged according to the Florida State Junior Thespian guidelines. 5. The script will contain only pages specified by the Florida State Junior Thespian guidelines. 6. A script that is improperly formatted is in violation of the specified Florida State Junior Thespian guidelines and is subject to disqualification prior to adjudication. 7. Judges may make comments in the margins of the scene, on the evaluation form and/or during the verbal adjudication. 8. The student may not submit a scene that has been previously adjudicated by Florida State Junior Thespians. The scene must be original work. 9. All scenes submitted WILL NOT be returned. 10. Scene writing will be 10 minutes in length with just the playwright and the judges. The playwright will introduce the play and then have a discussion with the judges. Observers may be in the room for this event.

17 The following topics will be considered by the adjudicators while reading your play: 1. Character: 1. Are goals established? 2. Is the goal pursued in a manner consistent with the character s personality and limitations? 3. Can an audience empathize with the protagonist? 4. Are the supporting characters vital to the development and resolution of the plot? 2. Dialogue: 1. Is each character s diction (choice of words) consistent with the given circumstances? 2. Is all dialogue necessary to the development of the plot and each character? 3. Plot: 1. Does the playwright provide all exposition necessary to understanding the characters and their situations (who, what, when, where why)? 2. Once the initial incident in introduced, does the rising action follow a logical sequence of events to an appropriate climax and resolution? 4. Stageability: 1. Will this work easily translate to the stage given the limitations of a stage play? 18 SET DESIGN CHOICE OF PLAYS The student may choose any play from the list announced by the State Board of Directors each September on the Florida State Junior Thespian web page. 1. The student must construct an original, three-dimensional model OR perspective rendering executed to 1/4 = 1 0 OR 1/2" = 1'0" showing the set and its relationship to the theatrical space. 2. Computer aided design is acceptable. 3. At least one figure (to scale) must be included in the rendering or model to show proportion and scale. 4. If a multi-set play is chosen, only ONE scene shall be designed. 5. The student may include a floor plan to the same scale. 6. The set is to be designed for a stage with a proscenium opening of 38 w x 20 h. An apron with a depth of 6' may also be used. The proscenium arch and wing space must be represented in the model. 7. The student must verbally justify the design to the adjudicators. Note cards may be used. 8. Only one student may be involved in the design. Collaborative entries will be disqualified prior to adjudication. 9. All artwork utilized must be original, and created by the participant. 10. The event will not exceed ten (10) minutes. The student presentation is not to exceed five (5) of these ten (10) minutes. DISCUSSION SUGGESTIONS In your five-minute presentation you should be able to discuss the following: 1. Describe the play in one sentence. 2. Summarize the scene you are designing for. (What is happening?) 3. Describe the setting you've designed. (Place, period, style) 4. Explain how research may have influenced your design. 5. What requirements of the scene influenced your design? (number of characters, entrances, exits) 6. What other choices did you make? (color, decor, levels) 7. If applicable, describe how the scenery appears and how it will transition into the next scene. (You do not need to design the other scenes.) 19 SOLO MUSICAL THEATER 1. The selection must be drawn from published musicals written for the theater. No original works, medleys, or screenplays are allowed. The selection may contain dialogue. 2. All material should be presented as if within the full context of the performance of the play. 3. The performer MUST use non-vocal musical accompaniment which can be live or taped. 4. No costumes may be worn. 5. Hand props may be used if integral to the scene. Integral is defined as a prop that is physically used by the actor. 6. Not to exceed five (5) minutes. MATERIALS 1. Each room will be provided with 3 sturdy, straight-backed, armless chairs, and one 4x4 card type table, which will not support standing weight. These are the only permissible furniture. 2. If you wish to use a recorded track, we will provide a set of speakers and an auxiliary cable you may use to plug into your portable device. You are welcome to bring your own CD player or ipod dock. 3. A piano or electric keyboard will be provided. 4. A hard surface floor may not be provided. 5. The event is likely to be held in a standard classroom as opposed to a theater; performance space may be limited.

20 SMALL GROUP MUSICAL THEATER 1. Three (3) to seven (7) students may participate 2. The selection must be drawn from published musicals written for the theater. No original works, medleys, or screenplays are allowed. The selection may contain dialogue and both participants must be actively involved in the musical selection. 3. All material should be presented as if within the full context of the performance of the play. 4. The performers MUST use non-vocal musical accompaniment which can be live or taped. 5. No costumes may be worn. 6. Hand props may be used if integral to the scene. Integral is defined as a prop that is physically used by the actor. 7. Not to exceed five (5) minutes. MATERIALS 1. Each room will be provided with 7 sturdy, straight-backed, armless chairs, and one 4x4 card type table, which will not support standing weight. This is the only permissible furniture. 2. The performers MUST provide their own media sound device. 3. A tuned piano will be provided, no other equipment is permissible. 4. A hard surface floor may not be provided. 5. If you wish to use a recorded track, we will provide a set of speakers and an auxiliary cable you may use to plug into your portable device. You are welcome to bring your own CD player or ipod dock.
