Where: Dallas, TX at the Dallas Convention Center and Omni Hotel. Why: To see amazing performances by other schools, Compete in individual events, Audition for scholarships (for seniors), Attend fun and informative workshops, Buy cool theatre swag, And because it's Awesome! Thursday- Thrift Shop Chic Rock your favorite retro outfit with tacky jackets, funky hats, 50s bowling shirts, 60's BoHo, 70's platforms, 80's workout wear, 90's neon, 2000's trucker hats, and so on. Venture into vintage! Friday- Geek Chic Button up your plaid shirt, pull up your highwaisted highwaters, suspenders, blackrimmed glasses, and express your inner Steve Urkle! Saturday- Thes-Con Chic Think Thespians meet Comic-Con! Dress as your favorite character from literature, comics, movies, TV, plays or musicals. Don your capes or cloaks, apply your Doctor Who accessories, or construct costumes that reflect your inner alter-ego! Luau Dance Theme Aloha, E Komo Mai! Do the hula in your favorite Aloha shirt, leis, grass skirts (modest underclothing, please!), coconut bras, sunglasses, floppy hats, muumuus, sarongs, or any other colorful floral fashion. COMPETITIONS (IEs) If you wish to compete in any of the following competitions, please list that on the convention sign-up sheet. NEW THIS YEAR: Troupes are not limited to only 1 event in each category. We are only limited to 6 total Acting IE entries. For example, troupes can have 2 duet acting, 3 solo musicals and 1 group musical. Competitions include: Performance IEs: Solo Musical, Duet Musical, Group Musical, Monologue, Duet Acting, Group Acting Technical IEs: Sound Design, Lighting Design, Stage Management, Marketing, Costume Construction, Costume Design, Set Design o Short Film Playworks - playwriting competition Musicalworks - music composition competition (Individual Events or IEs are competitive events which qualify for National Competitions at the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska.) If you wish to compete, be sureto put which event on the convention sign in sheet.
3 ACTING IE's Monologue Monologue may not exceed three (3) minutes. 1. Material must be drawn from published scripts written for theater. Works from other forms such as poetry, fiction, or film are prohibited. The use of monologues not appearing in a theatrical script is NOT permitted;this includes stand-alone monologues found online or in monologue books. 2. Entrant must present two contrasting selections that may be different in period, style, or mood. 3. Each selection should be approximately one and a half minutes each and reflect an important moment in the play. The performance of both selections combined cannot exceed three minutes. 4. Only one character from each play may be used. 5. The introduction must be done at the beginning for both selections and must include only the entrant's name, troupe number, title ofselections, and the names ofthe playwrights. Time will begin once the entrant speaks after conclusion ofthe introduction. 6. Props, costumes, or theatrical makeup are not allowed. 7. One chair may be used. DuetActing 1. Material must be drawn from published scripts written for theater. Works from other forms such as poetry, fiction, or film are not permitted. 2. Entrants must present one selection. 3. The performance cannot exceed five minutes. 4. Each individual must be actively involved in the scene. 5. The introduction must include only the entrants' names, troupe number, title ofselection, and the name ofthe playwright. Time will begin once a performer speaks after conclusion ofthe introduction. 6. Props, costumes, or theatrical makeup are not allowed. 7. Up to two chairs may be used. Group Acting 1. Material must be drawn from published scripts written for theatre. Works from other forms such as poetry, fiction, or film are not permitted. 2. "Group" means three to sixteen performers. 3. Entrants must present one selection. 4. The performance cannot exceed five minutes. 5. Each individual must be actively involved in the scene 6. The introduction must include only the entrants' names, troupe number, title ofselection, and the name ofthe playwright. Time will begin once a performer speaks after conclusion ofthe introduction. 7. Props, costumes, or theatrical makeup are not allowed. 8. Up to six chairs and one table may be used. Solo Musical Theatre Solo Musical Theater 1. Material must be drawn from songs from published scripts written for theater only. Works from other forms such as film, television, poetry, fiction, or popular song lyrics not interpreted as musical theater performance are not permitted. Remember, this is a musical theater selection. The adjudicators will consider how well the piece is acted and not just how it is sung. The selection may contain limited dialogue; however, remember this is primarily a "sung and not spoken selection." 2. Entrant must present one selection. 3. The performance cannot exceed five minutes. 4. For all music events, performers MUST use pre-recorded, non-vocal musical accompaniment. No live music, accompanists, or a capella performances are permitted. A CD player/mp3 player will be provided, however, performers are encouraged to bring their own CD player/mp3 player. 5. 5 TECHNICAL THEATRE INDIVIDUAL EVENTS These are design competitions that you submit in advance. Ifyou are interested in the following, speak to Mr. Archilla for details: Costume Design Costume Construction Lighting Design Scenic Design Sound Design Stage management Theatre Marketing TECH CHALLENGE AND TECH TEAM DESIGN COMPETITIONS Tech Challenge Only one (1) team per school offive (5) to seven (7) students per school may compete in a Tech Challenge relay (for example: leg a platform, focus a light, fold a backdrop, costume quick changes, setting props, sewing, roll cables, etc.) Set Design Competition Only one (1) team offour (4) students per school may compete. During a 2-hour time slot, teams offour (4) students produce and bring to life a theatrically-based scenic design based on a show-specific prompt. Students will need to provide their own materials, ranging from hot-glue guns and glue sticks to paint to balsa wood to fabric to foam core, and all points in-between! The play selected for you to design WILL BE REVEALED AT CONVENTION Your team will design a single set for the show listed in the packet you receive at convention. You may choose any one ofthe scenes listed below but you must be clear about your choice in your design and on your concept page. You have 2 hours to complete your design, turn it in to the judge and have your area completely clean. You should work as a team and collaborate as much as possible. Your design must remain in the box provided. You may not alter the box because in reality you would not be able to alter the theater. Failure to observe and follow the required rules will result in disqualification. Materials 1. You will get one office paper box to accommodate your design. Your design must stay within the box. 2. You will get one low amperage power cord. You may not use another team's power cord. Only one electrical device may be plugged in at a time. 3. You will receive this packet to use for writing your design concept. Make sure that your team names, school, and troupe number are on the packet. Rules 1. Your design must remain in the box. 2. You must use only one electrical device at a time. 3. You may not use your phone or the internet for help in your any way. Outside help will result in disqualification.
6 4. You may not use spray paint. 5. You may not use flame. 6. All spray adhesives must be checked by the judge and may be disallowed. Be prepared for this. 7. You may not damage the exhibit hall. Damage to the space may result in your disqualification and hold your troupe financially responsible. 8. Be prepared to clean your area when your design is completed. 9. You will have 2 hours to complete your design. No extra time will be given. 10. Ifa team member has to leave the event they will not be allowed to return. 11. Hazardous materials may not be used. Concept At convention (at the beginning ofthe contest) you will receive a description ofthe show to be designed. You must write a one page paper (on the back ofyour score sheet) to go with your finished set explaining your ideas, concept, and how you constructed your design. DO NOT TELL THE PLAY TITLE SELECTION TO OTHERS. OTHER SCHOOLS MAY BE DESIGNING AT A LATER TIME AND YOU DON'T WANT TO GIVE THEM AND ADVANTAGE OVER YOU. Designs are judged on the following criteria: CONCEPT: Does the concept statement for the designs ofthe set have a cohesive, meaningful design explanation that is motivated by the play? CREATIVITY / USE OF MATERIALS: Does the design show imagination, originality and innovation that is appropriate for the play? DESIGN: Does the design of the set create an understanding of social standards, historical time period and place in the world? DESIGN ELEMENTS: Are the elements ofdesign utilized to create a complete cohesive set? SET CONSTRUCTION / SCALE: Was there a complete set constructed in the box that displayed knowledge of how scenery is constructed? COMPONENTS OF DESIGN PROCESS: Was there a concept statement for the design in the box at the end ofthe preparation time? OVERALL IMPRESSION: Does the design and constructed costume meet the needs ofthe play and the vision described in the concept? Make-up (and Hair) Competition Only one (1) team of four (4) students per school may compete. During a 2-hour time slot, teams of four (4) students produce and bring to life a theatrically-based design for hair and makeup based on a show-specific prompt. Schools MUST bring makeup morgues as references. Students will need to provide their own materials, ranging from hot-glue guns and glue sticks to glitter to fabric to feathers, and all points in-between! 1. You will have 2 hours to complete 2 make-up designs and apply the make-up. At the end of2 hours your area must be completely clean. 2. The Renderings (make-up design sheet), Concept Statement, this Handout, and your Make-up Design Score Sheet must be placed in the designated judging area. 3. Make sure your Troupe Number, your School Name, and the Name ofyour Four Contestants are legibly written on your Make-up Design Scoring Sheet. 4. Write your Troupe Number and School Name in the lower right corner on the BACK of all your paperwork. 5. You may not use spray paint in your designs. 6. You may not use spray adhesives in your designs. 7. You may not glue, staple, or do any construction work that could damage the actor. 8. You are strongly discouraged from using pre-purchased make-up items.
7 9. You will receive a summary and a list ofcharacter descriptions from the play, as well as the design rubric. The materials are for reference use only. Please only write on the papers where instructed. 10. You are encouraged to come up with your own original design. Electronic devices are not to be used for research and should be avoided at all times during competition. IMPORTANT: PLEASE MAKE SURE TO WRITE YOUR CONCEPT STATEMENT ON THE BACK OF YOUR MAKE-UP RENDERINGS. DO NOT TELL THE PLAY TITLE SELECTION TO OTHERS. OTHER SCHOOLS MAY BE DESIGNING AT A LATER TIME AND YOU DON'T WANT TO GIVE THEM AND ADVANTAGE OVER YOU. DESIGN ELEMENTS: Are the elements ofdesign utilized to create a complete cohesive make-up? MAKE-UP APPLICATION: Was there a complete make-up constructed on the armature that displayed knowledge ofhow make-up is applied? COMPONENTS OF DESIGN PROCESS: Was there a concept statement for the designs, renderings (2) and a make-up present on the armature at the end ofthe preparation time? OVERALL IMPRESSION: Does the design and constructed make-up meet the needs ofthe play and the vision described in the concept? OVERALL IMPRESSION: Does the design and constructed mask meet the needs of the play and the vision described in the concept?
9 Technical Texas Individual Events Showcase (Tech TIES) Auditions The Texas Individual Events Showcase (Tech TIES) audition series is intended to be an educational program offering Festival delegates the opportunity to receive constructive feedback on prepared theatrical material and technical designs in the areas ofpublicity, costume design, costume construction, scene design, lighting design, and stage management. Participants from technical events will have their designs prominently displayed in the designated display area. The auditions culminate in the selection ofthree outstanding entries in each category. SCHOLARSHIP AUDITIONS For 2 seniors only. Must be majoring in Theatre. Speak with Mr. Archilla for Performance (Acting & Musical Theatre) details. A maximum oftwo performance candidates may be submitted from each troupe. Therefore, candidates MUST be approved to audition by the Troupe's sponsor. Acting: Prepare two contrasting monologues which, when presented, do not exceed 90 seconds total (excluding very briefintroduction). Musical Theatre: Prepare a briefportion ofa musical theatre song and one monologue which, when presented, do not exceed 90 seconds total (excluding very briefintroduction). Technical Theatre Compile a portfolio ofyour technical theater work/designs and prepare/plan a table display for the portfolio and/or design items. Prepare a 2-3 minute presentation speech to discuss your portfolio during multiple interviews with multiple college reps at the Festival auditions. Future Educator Submit an essay with your completed application; answer the following: Discuss a teacher who has greatly influenced you. (maximum of2 typed pages)
