2 SPEECH AND DRAMA SCHEDULE Speech and Drama is a competitive discipline of Live Arts and part of the 131 st Wenlock Olympian Games The organiser of Speech and Drama is Lucy Willis ( the organiser ), for the Wenlock Olympian Live Arts Organising Committee, on behalf of the Wenlock Olympian Society (referred to as we ). Closing date for entries is Sunday 15 th January 2017 Please send entry form(s) and entry fee(s) to: Lucy Willis Corve Brook House Brockton Much Wenlock, Shropshire lucywillis00@aol.com TF13 6JR Tel: There will be a Celebration Concert after Live Arts (date to be confirmed). In the meantime, we ask those Live Arts entrants who are interested in taking part in this exciting event to tick the relevant box on the entry form. Live Arts Rules and Conditions 1. No photography/ video recording will be allowed at Live Arts (except by the appointed Live Arts representative). This is a requirement of the British and International Federation of Festivals of which Live Arts is a provisional member. 2. Competitors must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. 3. A time limit is indicated for each class. Performances exceeding this time may be stopped. 4. The organiser reserves the right to refuse the use of any electrical equipment. 5. The organiser reserves the right to combine or reorganise classes depending on the number of entries received. 6. Entry Fees: Individual entry = 4.50 Duo entry = 6.50 Choral Speaking (maximum entry of 20 performers): Up to 8 performers = From 9 to 20 performers = Age Groups: Year, means school year, not age. Competitors must be aged 18 or under on 31st August Primary Competitors up to and including Year 6. Senior Competitors from Year 7 to Year 13. Live Arts 2017 Speech and Drama Schedule Page 1

3 Live Arts Rules and Conditions (cont d) 7. No adults can compete in any event, with the exception of Choral Speaking, when an adult may take part only as a conductor. 8. Competitors will be notified of the date and time of their classes by no later than Monday 27 th February Please contact the organiser if you have not received this information by this date. 9. The organiser regrets that no changes can be made to competition timings once the programme has been finalised, so please ensure that you are available to compete on the relevant day before returning the entry form. 10. Prizes: Each competitor (excluding Choral Speaking) will be awarded a participation certificate. A group participation certificate will be awarded to each Choral Speaking group. Gold, Silver and Bronze Wenlock Olympian medals will be awarded to the winners in each class (unless otherwise stated in the Schedule). First, Second and Third place certificates will be awarded in each class (unless otherwise stated in the Schedule). Special trophy awards will be given to the following (please note there will be no cash prize for Live Arts 2017): - PERFMER OF THE YEAR (PRIMARY) - PERFMER OF THE YEAR (SENI) 11. The decision of the adjudicator shall be final and binding. Speech and Drama Specific Rules and Conditions 1. Categories: There are 7 categories in which to enter. Entrants can enter each category but must only enter once, according to their age group: 1 Choral Speaking 2 Verse Speaking 3 Reading for Performance 4 Creative Verse Writing and Performing 5 Creative Prose Writing and Performing 6 Acting Solo 7 Acting Duologue 2. Copyright Compliance: Live Arts, as a provisional member of The British and International Federation of Festival for Music, Dance and Speech, pays an annual copyright fee. Subsequently, Live Arts is delighted to announce that it has entered into an agreement with the Author s Licensing and Collecting Society. This means that performers do not have to seek copyright permission for any poetry, prose or solo dramatic items performed to a time limit of 10 minutes. ACTING DUOLOGUES classes ARE NOT COVERED BY THIS AGREEMENT. Therefore competitors are responsible for obtaining Performing Rights by application to the publishers and by payment of any stipulated fee, before the date of the competition. If anyone is unsure what they need to do in this respect, they should call , the British & International Federation of Festivals, for advice. In order to qualify for copyright indemnity: at the start of their performance, each entrant (including Choral Speaking) must announce their pieces with the title and the author s name. the entrant must not change any wording or the gender of the character(s). Competitors and teachers will be delighted to know that their participation in Live Arts means that Authors will be directly reimbursed as a consequence of their work being performed at the Festival. 4. Capacity of the Venue - Choral Speaking Only: For health and safety reasons and due to the capacity of the venue (both seating and car parking): a maximum of 5 group entries (with no more than 20 competitors in each group) will be permitted to compete in each class. entry to the Choral Speaking category is on a first come first served basis. contacts will be alerted immediately if they cannot compete. audience seating is limited and will be on a first come first served basis. 5. Costume, Props and Make Up Full costume is not permitted. Long practice skirts which allow the freedom of movement may be used together with small items such as hats, scarves, aprons, shawls, gloves, etc. Nudity is not permitted. The organiser can provide a small table and up to 2 chairs. Entrants must ensure to have warned the organiser in advance should they be required. Please note, for reasons of health and safety, performers must not stand on them. The adult(s) responsible for the performer(s) must take full responsibility for the supply and safe operation of all props at all times and in all circumstances. The organiser reserves the right to refuse any prop which it deems inappropriate or it deems potentially harmful if not used appropriately. No electronic devices may be used unless required as a prop. If a device is to be used, it must be approved by the adjudicator before the start of the performance. Animals (except guide dogs) and pyrotechnics (including cigarettes and e-cigarettes) are not permitted within the venue. Stage make-up must not be worn for the Speech and Drama section of Live Arts competitions. Live Arts 2017 Speech and Drama Schedule Page 3

5 1. Choral Speaking (Primary only) IMPTANT See Speech and Drama Rules and Conditions, 4 Capacity of the Venue - Choral Speaking Only. The group of no more than 20 performers will perform one poem from memory. The selection must be published and age appropriate. The group should demonstrate their use of vocal skills to engage the listener and their use of diction, posture and engagement with the audience. Small hand props are permitted but must be minimal. No electronic devices, whatsoever, are permitted to be used unless required as a prop. If one is to be used, it must be approved by the adjudicator at the start and must be switched off. In order to comply with copyright legislation: the group leader must hand the book from which their poem has been taken, to the adjudicator along with a legible, clean copy of the poem. These will be returned to the group leader at the end of their section. In order to comply with copyright indemnity: at the start of their performance, the group (either one or more) must announce their poem with the title and the author the group must not change the wording or the gender of the character(s). There is a maximum of 20 competitors per entry due to venue capacity. There is a specific time allowance limit of 10 minutes for the whole performance. The adjudicator reserves the right to deduct marks or stop a performance if the time limit is exceeded. Live Arts 2017 Speech and Drama Schedule Page 4

6 2. Verse Speaking The entrant will speak from memory two contrasting poems: 1) One of the set verse selections (of which there are a choice of 2 in each age group); and 2) Own choice. All set verse selections can be found in: Primary: Senior: The Puffin Book of Fantastic First Poems Edited by June Crebbin ISBN: The Works Chosen by Paul Cookson ISBN: The own choice selection must be published and age appropriate. For own composition works, see 4 Creative Verse Writing and Performing. The entrant should demonstrate their vocal skills to engage the listener and their use of body language (i.e. facial expressions, occasional subtle gesture) to complement their vocals. In order to comply with copyright legislation: the entrant must hand the book from which the own choice selection has been taken, to the adjudicator along with a legible, clean copy of the poem. These will be returned to the entrant at the end of their section. Reading for Performance The entrant will: read a passage of prose of their own choice (they must not memorise the reading but read it aloud from a book or folder); and announce the passage of prose with the title and author. The selection must be published and age appropriate. For own composition works, see 5 Creative Prose Writing and Performing. The entrant should demonstrate their use of vocal skills to engage the listener and their use of diction, posture and engagement with the audience. Small hand props are permitted but must be minimal. No electronic devices, whatsoever, are permitted to be used unless required as a prop. If one is to be used, it must be approved by the adjudicator at the start and must be switched off. These will be returned to the entrant at the end of their section. In order to comply with copyright indemnity: at the start of their performance, each entrant must announce their passage of prose with the title and the author the entrant must not change the wording or the gender of the character(s). There is a specific time allowance limit for each age group. The adjudicator reserves the right to deduct marks or stop a performance if the time limit is exceeded. 9 4. Creative Verse Writing & Performing The entrant will recite a poem of their own composition based on a theme of their own choice. Primary: Senior: The poem should be no longer than 500 words. The poem should be no longer than 1000 words. The entrant should demonstrate not only their writing but also vocal skills to engage the listener and their use of body language (i.e. facial expressions, occasional subtle gesture) to complement their vocals. The adjudicator will be looking for: 1) Originality and Uniqueness (i.e. never been written like it before). 2) Overall Thoughtfulness. 3) Shape on the Page. 4) Enthusiasm and Gusto of the Writer. All poems will need to have been submitted with the entry form prior to the event. Should the work be deemed unsuitable, the organisers reserve the right to withdraw the work before the competition date. There is a specific time allowance limit for each age group. The adjudicator reserves the right to deduct marks or stop a performance if the time limit is exceeded. If times permits, a session will be programmed into Live Arts for participants to receive verbal feedback on their entries. 10 5. Creative Prose Writing & Performing The entrant will read a passage of prose of their own composition. They must not memorise the reading but read it aloud, preferably from a folder. Primary: Senior: The story should be no longer than 1000 words. The story should be no longer than 3000 words. All prose works will need to have been submitted with the entry form prior to the event. Should the work be deemed unsuitable, the organisers reserve the right to withdraw the work before the competition performance date. The adjudicator will be looking for: 1) Originality and Uniqueness (i.e. never been written like it before). 2) Interesting Characterisation. 3) Variety in use of the English Language. 4) A Sense of Wanting More. There is a specific time allowance limit for each age group. The adjudicator reserves the right to deduct marks or stop a performance if the time limit is exceeded. If times permits, a session will be programmed into Live Arts for participants to receive verbal feedback on their entries. 11 6. Acting - Solo The solo entrant will: perform a solo scene from memory; and announce the title of the play/book and the playwright/author as well as the character s name. The scene must be selected from: a published play; or screenplay; or a published collection of solo scenes; or adapted from the dialogue of a published novel. The entrant must demonstrate their use of vocal skills and the performance space. Full costume is not permitted although small props may be used (please see Rules and Conditions). Stage make-up must not be worn. In order to comply with copyright legislation: the entrant must hand the book from which the scene has been taken/ adapted to the adjudicator along with a legible, clean copy of the scene. These will be returned to the entrant at the end of their section. In order to comply with copyright indemnity: at the start of their performance, each entrant must announce their scene with the title and the author/ playwright as well as the character s name. the entrant must not change the wording or the gender of the character(s). There is a specific time allowance limit for each category. The adjudicator reserves the right to deduct marks or stop a performance if the time limit is exceeded.
