1 NEWS RELEASE For more information contact: Tim Davidson, Communications Coordinator City of Hazelwood, Missouri Office: (314) / Cellular: (314) tddavidson@hazelwoodmo.org For Immediate Release 2012 Hazelwood Harvestfest Featured Olympic Legend and Full Day of Fun (HAZELWOOD, MO Sept. 11, 2012) Excitement filled the air when four-time Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee arrived at the staging area for this year s Hazelwood Harvestfest parade at City Hall. She graciously accepted the City s invitation to be the Grand Marshal of the 2012 parade which was held on Saturday, September 8, starting at 9 a.m. It kicked off the full-day of activities and entertainment planned at Howdershell Park from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Joyner-Kersee s participation tied into the theme of Experience America, Experience Missouri, Experience Hazelwood. As a winner of six Olympic medals who was voted by Sports Illustrated as The Greatest Female Athlete of the 20 th Century, Joyner-Kersee helped residents experience the pride of being Americans by celebrating the successes of our U.S. Olympic athletes and she enabled event organizers to encourage residents to experience everything Hazelwood has to offer. Parade Results The top five cash prizes given out for the best themed float and marching unit went to these organizations: First Place - $150 Hazelwood West High School (HWHS) Marching Wildcats; Second Place - $100 Valley Industries Sheltered Workshop; Third Place - $75 Hazelwood Tiny Tots; Fourth Place - $50 LA Dance; and Fifth Place North County Community Church s Awana Group. Other noteworthy parade participants included the John Ford Highland Pipe Band, Cub Pack 729, Cub Pack 71, Cadette Rythmettes, Twirl Girlz, and Jimmy Johns. Miss Hazelwood 2012 Six beautiful young women between the ages of 15 and 19 competed for a chance to be crowned Miss Hazelwood 2012 during a coronation ceremony held at Howdershell Park. In addition to satisfying the age requirement, the following ladies had to be residents of Hazelwood: Kaitlynn Frost, age 17, HWHS junior sponsored by Amy Meyerott Photography; Jennifer Schultz, age 17, HWHS senior sponsored by McClain Chiropractic; Kirsten Henderson, age 16, HWHS junior sponsored by Landolt Properties, Inc.; Samantha Schreck, age 17, HWHS senior sponsored by Max s Meats & Deli; Samantha Garnier, age 16, Duchesne High School junior sponsored by Prudential Select Properties; and Danielle Randall, age 16, HWHS senior sponsored by Deaver s Restaurant & Tamz Photography. -more-

2 Harvestfest Featured Olympic Legend and Family Fun, Add One Each contestant was asked to answer a couple of questions. Bill Young, Carol Rogers, and Pat Chamineak were selected for the panel of judges. While the judges went to deliberate and make their final choices, Mayor Robinson welcomed everyone to this year s event and introduced several of the City Council members in attendance. In addition, outgoing Miss Hazelwood 2011 Samantha Rieke shared some of the experiences she had over the past year and gave some advice to the future queen. Tension filled the air when the time came to announce the winners. The runner-up of the contest was Danielle Randall. And, Kirsten Henderson was crowned as the new Miss Hazelwood She was awarded a $500 scholarship to cover the cost of her books for college and several other prizes. New Activities Added A climbing wall, an inflatable zip line structure, and Cabela s fishing pond were the new activities added to this year s event. The purpose of having these attractions was to add a little more adventure to the day for fair goers. They were also used to help promote the department s efforts to make its programming more exciting such as offering a white water rafting trip to Ocoee River in Tennessee. Kids of all ages, as well as adults, were seen climbing to new heights, flying through the air, and catching real fish with poles provided on-site. Fun for Entire Family This year s Harvestfest event featured a little bit of everything for people of all ages. For the kids, there was a petting zoo, pony rides, a home run derby, a children s craft area, and a Treasure of the Caribbean dual slide and obstacle course, as well as other giant playground inflatables featuring sea adventure themes. Adults enjoyed searching for bargains inside the Used Book Sale tent, walking through the Arts and Crafts Show, competing in two horseshoe tournaments, and playing Bingo games hosted by Hazelwood s senior adult organization known as Hazelnuts. One of the most popular cover bands in St. Louis, Trixie Delight, played live music from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. To cap it all off, Hazelwood Parks and Recreation staff gave away aluminum water bottles, personal first-aid kits and flashlights (batteries not included) with the City s logo on them to guests who stopped by the City Services Tent. 3 Olympic Legend Leads Parade As Grand Marshal Four-time U.S. Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee was the Grand Marshal of Hazelwood s 2012 Harvestfest parade to help residents experience the pride of being Americans by celebrating the successes of our U.S. Olympic athletes. 6 Hazelwood Fire Department s Sparky the Fire Dog pumped up the crowd during Trixie Delight s live concert at this year s Hazelwood Harvestfest from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. After participating in the parade, members of the John Ford Highland Pipe Band strolled through the park and performed mini-concerts during this year s Hazelwood Harvestfest.
