January 2017 Dear Prospective Sponsor, What should you do if you see a giant squirrel walking down the street, dancing and playing a light-up guitar? Look for the robot, of course! Washington FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Team 2930, the Sonic Squirrels, invites you to join us to help build the next generation of science and technology leaders. Over the past nine years, we ve grown from a small group of 8 members to a large group of over 30 members, raising the roof of Glacier Peak High School with our spirit and enthusiasm for STEM. The Sonic Squirrels compete in FIRST Robotics, which combines the excitement of competitive sports with tremendous opportunities to develop STEM skills under the guidance of professional engineering and business volunteer mentors. Our team fosters well-rounded life capabilities including selfconfidence, communication, and leadership. Students on our team learn and apply vital workforce skills, including engineering, programming, computer-aided design, marketing, graphic design, website development, business planning, and fundraising skills. Our team designs and builds robots based on annual themed challenges under strict rules, limited resources, and tight time constraints. We compete in three on three alliances with robots weighing up to 140 pounds. For more information, see FIRSTinspires.org. Team 2930 strives for excellence, and over the past sveral years, we have received multiple Safety and Spirit awards, and the Imagery, Chairman s, Engineering Inspiration, Spirit, Industrial Design, and Judges Awards. We also were a part of the winning alliance at Pacific Northwest Championships in Team 2930 s unique and memorable Sonic Squirrel brand is highly recognized and well-loved throughout Western Washington. The team actively reaches out to the community, spreading our passion for engineering at over 20 events this year. This summer, we marched in the Klahaya Days Parade in Snohomish, taught a robotics day camp at the Alderwood Boys and Girls Club, and we partnered with the US Military to promote the Independence Day 2 movie. Our team has a special focus on getting girls excited about STEM careers. Currently, about one-third of our members are girls, and in October we presented at Geek Girl Con at the Seattle Convention Center. We look forward to pumping up the excitement as we host over 40 teams in a District FIRST Robotics Competition at Glacier Peak High School on March th, We invite you and your families to join us for a VIP tour of the pits. Come out and cheer for the Sonic Squirrels. We guarantee you ll have fun! The Sonic Squirrels welcome all types of donations. Monetary contributions are needed for raw materials and parts for robots, tools, competition registration fees, team travel expenses, marketing materials, and team uniforms. Donations of products and services are also welcome. It is very rewarding to work with these highly motivated students, and we are always looking for new volunteer mentors for our team. If you would like to meet the Sonic Squirrels, have a demonstration of our robots, are interested in sponsoring our team or becoming a mentor, or simply would like more information, please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you! Respectfully, FRC Team 2930 Officer Team Jin Hayashi, Co-Advisor jin.hayashi@sno.wednet.edu Sean Wilson, Co-Advisor sean.wilson@sno.wednet.edu John Bottenberg, Lead Engineering Mentor sonicsquirrels@gmail.com 3
Team We are the Sonic Squirrels Robotics Team from Glacier Peak High School in Snohomish Washington. We are a student led team that competes in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) a non-profit organization that encourages students of all ages to participate in STEM activities. We are a team that focuses on the FIRST Robotics Competition. We have a strong core leadership group that makes the teams executive decisions. We are coming to an age where us the students need to make the decisions for ourselves, it is no longer the mentors making the decisions. We as a team strive to be the first followers of FIRST s movement. We believe that what makes a leader so great is his first follower. We are striving to make FIRST a household name so that STEM is easily recognized as a fun and rewarding thing to do. 4
FIRST For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology The mission of FIRST is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting Mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. FIRST invests in evaluation to continuously measure and inform the organization in its effectiveness in reaching its desired outcomes and making datadriven decisions to improve programs. Internal and external studies are conducted to assess impact on youth participants including understanding changes in STEM interest and intent, education achievement, post-high school plans, career intent and outcomes related to 21st century work skills, as a result of participating in FIRST. Gracious Professionalism Gracious Professionalism is part of the ethos of FIRST. It's a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community. With Gracious Professionalism, fierce competition and mutual gain are not separate notions. Gracious professionals learn and compete like crazy, but treat one another with respect and kindness in the process. They avoid treating anyone like losers. No chest thumping tough talk, but no sticky-sweet platitudes either. Knowledge, competition, and empathy are comfortably blended. In the long run, Gracious Professionalism is part of pursuing a meaningful life. One can add to society and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing one has acted with integrity and sensitivity. Coopertition Coopertition produces innovation. At FIRST, Coopertition is displaying unqualified kindness and respect in the face of fierce competition. Coopertition is founded on the concept and a philosophy that teams can and should help and cooperate with each other even as they compete. Coopertition involves learning from teammates. It is teaching teammates. It is learning from Mentors. And it is managing and being 5
managed. Coopertition means competing always, but assisting and enabling others when you can. Game Every year, there is a major robotics event hosted by FIRST which involves many High Schools around the globe. This game changes each year but the basic concepts are still in place. There are generally six teams, three on three, and each of the three teams being called an alliance. The game consists of a fifteen second autonomous period, followed by a two minute thirty second tele operated portion. This year, the FIRST Robotics Competition theme is Steamworks. Teams score points by delivering gears to their airship or scoring fuel to raise forty kilopascals to allow the airship to fly. The team can gain ranking points by either making all four rotors turning, or raising the forty kilopascals to fly. The scoring in tele-op is as follows: In the las thirty seconds, should the robot attempt a successful climb, an extra fifty points are added to the alliances score. If the robot scores one fuel into the upper boiler goal, that is 1/3 of a point. The low goal of the boiler is worth 1/9 of a point and each rotor spinning is worth 40 points. The points in autonomous are as follow: sixty points for each rotor spinning, one point for every successful high boiler shot, and 1/3 point for ever successful low boiler shot. 6
Community Since we are part of FIRST, we believe it is our responsibility to spread inspiration and creativity to young individuals. We participate in many events to encourage and show people the true meaning of innovation. Many of these events are called Outreaches which our team participates in to show our willingness to put in effort to encourage this innovative movement to go forward.
