1 Girl s Windmill Pitching Newsletter 422 Owner/Publisher July 30, 2014 Bill Dryden Fun in the Sun I have traveled to and coached in a few world series and nationals in my coaching days and as a pitching instructor following my students, and that has taken me to a lot of different venues, but for fun in the sun, I th prefer none over the one I am attending beginning August 4. The World Fastpitch Connection in Myrtle Beach is a well run tournament that continues to attract many of the same teams year after year. That says a lot for the tournament. We all know you can take your choice of many nationals and world series. Only the very best limit the number of teams and have rigid qualification criteria. For instance the ASA 18U Gold Nationals allow only 64 teams in the tournament. Therefore if teams continue to go to certain nationals, there must be a reason. The reasons I enjoy the WFC begins with how the tournament is conducted, the complexes that I have visited, and the unending places to visit when your team (s) are not on the field. One that immediately comes to mind is Broadway at the Beach. With endless shops, restaurants, theaters, and almost anything you could imagine, the entertainment possibilities seem infinite. Then there are the array of different cuisines. You will see hundreds of signs advertising Calabash seafood buffets. The problem is finding the real definition of Calabash. Most agree on one thing. It originated about 30 miles north of Myrtle Beach in a quaint fishing village named Calabash, NC. The village actually sits on an inlet and not on the Atlantic Oceanfront. With barely 200 residents, the town boasts 38 restaurants. Although definitions of Calabash cooking vary, it seems that it generally means as fresh as you can get it, lightly battered and fried. It also means plenty of the tasty food. So if you really want Calabash style seafood, drive 30 miles up RT 17 and head over to Calabash. Then when you are in Myrtle Beach, you have something to compare. For me, I look forward to Captain George s seafood buffet when in either Myrtle Beach or Virginia Beach. When not at games or playing tourist, I also enjoy sitting on my oceanfront balcony at Compass Cove and drinking coffee or something cold if the weather calls for it. Cheryl will be out on the beach. I despise laying on the beach, but don t mind walking it...occasionally. With all there is to do, boredom can be stricken from your language while you are there. I am hoping to see some of the college coaches I know down there, and get them to watch pitching student Cristen Quillen with the Delaware Storm 18U. The rising freshman has an abundance of talent and needs to be seen. Hopefully, we can spark interest from some different coaches.

2 The WFC in Myrtle Beach will wrap up my summer season. It has zoomed by, but what a finale this will be. For some of you tryouts have already begun. For others, you are looking on the message boards for tryouts. Maybe you have never played travel ball before, and are looking to find a team. Use your own best judgment to figure out what you want and what each team has to offer. There is no push, no explosiveness and the same thing can be said for pitching. In the comparison above in which one girl s face has been blocked because she was a newer student and was just learning about explosiveness and I didn t want her to be embarrassed, you can see a distinct difference in the load position. The student on the left barely leans forward, and has little angle to the drive knee and is flat footed, whereas the student on the right has an accute body angle and accute knee angle and is up on the drive foot toes. She is in a position to attack or explode. The girl on the left will step off the rubber close to an upright position. Your load position needs to be more in line with the student on the right to be able to use the lower body to energetically push forward. Once you learn this, it will make a difference in your velocity. Remember to load and explode. TRYOUTS I received this notice of tryouts from Coach Jan Greenhawk of Wagner s M/G: The Wagner s M/G 18 U team will be holding tryouts for its year on the following dates: Sunday, August 10th, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, August 17th, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Tuesday, August 12 th, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday, August 14 th, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

7 Pitchers and Catchers should report at 9 a.m. on the Sunday dates, all others report at 10 a.m. There is a sign up form at for prospective players to fill out. This will allow us to communicate with you regarding any rain dates or schedule changes. All information filled out on the form will be kept confidential. We are looking for players and families that can commit to an extremely competitive showcase, ASA, and Triple Crown travel schedule. In , our schedule included Triple Crown Sports/CBS Sports Nationals, Carolina Cardinal Classic, Diam ond 9 Sun Classic, East Coast Fireworks, TNT (Fall and Sum m er), Field of Champions, ASA States, Blue Chip Showcase, Diam ond Classic Fall Exposure, PGF Showcase Showdown, New England s Finest am ong others. Our players were seen by over 200 college coaches over the Fall and Summer season. The team earned a berth to ASA Nationals. The Fall and Sum mer schedule tentatively includes the Ronald McDonald Showcase, TNT, Diam ond Classic Fall Exposure, Diam ond 9 Sun Classic, Jacksonville Showcase, Triple Crown Sports Nationals, NFCA Showcase, and many more. The final schedule will be determined by the coaching staff in consideration of athlete recruiting needs. Our schedule will also include ASA Qualifiers. Wagner s M/G is coached by Jan Greenhawk, Wayne Miller, Caity Batty, and Jimmy Greenhawk. Our first priority is teaching the gam e, getting our athletes recruited by top collegiate programs, challenging our players to a high level of perform ance, and creating a strong com petitive experience. We are looking for athletes who welcome that challenge and are ready to commit to the time, effort and work it requires. Our athletes will leave our program prepared to play collegiate ball. The W agner s organization is well respected throughout the country. Form er W agner s athletes have played at Tennessee, University of South Florida, Florida, and m any other college program s. Form er W agner s players Lauren Gibson and Kourtney Salvarola have played or are playing on the US National team. Our coaches do not have children on the team. With years of experience at the collegiate, travel and high school level, we have the ability to get our players the visibility needed to get recruited to the next level. 9 News and Tournament Results After jetting home from the ASA 18U Gold Nationals, Shaina Reed went overland to Worcester, MA to participate with her Delaware State Big League Champion team, Milford, in the East Regional, the final step before the Big League World Series. After the East Regional ends Thursday, she comes south about 30 minutes to hook up with the Morris County Belles Premier Gold at the New England s Finest Showcase. As of this writing the team is headed to the semi-final Thursday, no matter what they do with Connecticut today. They are already 3-1 and have won head to head against any team that could possibly tie them at 3 and 2. Connecticut is 0 and 4. NY is undefeated at 4 and 0 and appears very strong. They defeated Milford 1-0 and that has been the only close game NY has seen at the regional. Congratulations to the Eastern Coast Xplosion 14U team for a great finish in the USSSA B World Series. Pitching student Lexi Black is a member of the team and pitching student Kaitlyn Stahre guested with them. Congratulations to pitching student Maggie Cannon and the Diamond State Swoop 14U on their finish in the USSSA A World Series. Maggie guesting with the team. Good luck next week to the Delaware Storm 18U at the WFC World Series. Hope they have a great showing. Good luck this weekend to the Morris County Belles Premier Gold and the Morris County Belles Gold as both teams play in the New England s Finest Showcase. Some of my students have been AWOL (just kidding). Some of the girls who take lessons from me in VA are at Disney World for a huge Field Hockey extravaganza. I see from Facebook they are doing very well and having a lot of fun. Don t forget Margie Knight is holding her Top Ranked clinic August 4. They may already be full.
