1 Girl s Windmill Pitching Volum e 408 Novem ber 15, 2013 Bill Dryden TIME S UP For all but the most adament, habitual, half simple, foolhardy, fans, players, and parents of softball players, the season is over. The rest of us continue for another week or so, turning our vehicles to the south or hopping planes west to play in the warmth of a California or Southern sun. For me that means Myrtle Beach and the Early Signing Showcase held each year by the World Fastpitch Connection. I have attended this showcase for many years and have always loved it. This weekend will mark the first weekend that the Morris County Belles have participated in this showcase. The venue is terrific at Grand Park and at Pepper Geddings and the Compass Cove Oceanfront Resort with it s 22 indoor water attractions will keep kids occupied when not playing ball. Com pass Cove s 2 water slides m eans relaxation and fun when not on the field If it sounds like I m a commercial for Myrtle Beach, just let someone give me a home down there and find out. The only thing you would see of me would be tire tracks. However, that is probably not going to happen so the denizens of Delmar, DE/MD are stuck with me for the duration even though I spend little time here. Cheryl and I will arrive Thursday about 3:00 to check in and get settled. I already had Ryan s send me a buy one get one free dinner so it looks like a late afternoon trip to North Myrtle is in order. They must have known I was coming. Ryan s Steakhouse and Buffet features Southern fare on the buffet like pulled pork, collards, black-eyed peas, etc plus the usual buffet fare and is very good.

2 We have a relaxation day Friday before the 18U teams begin Saturday. The Belles teams and the Delaware Storm 18U team will keep me busy trying to shuttle between two complexes. I am hoping for a great showing by all of my students with plenty of interested coaches watching. Photos The Morris County Belles Gold team s Kaitlyn Stahre was very effective on the mound, allowing 1 earned run and 0 walks in two appearances. W hile Kaitlyn Stahre was roughing it in the cold on the softball field, her parents, Karl and Wendy were roughing it with steaks on the barbecue.

4 Coach Knight s Corner Coach Margie Knight is the Head Coach of Salisbury University in Salisbury, MD. She consistently produces one of the top Division III programs in the nation and I am thrilled to have her offer her insight and tips to my readers. At her convenience she will be contributing to the newsletter. Backhand catches Squeezing the ball on a catch usually will result in the ball popping out of your glove. Let the glove do its job. A back hand catch off the dirt/grass is the only play where our players squeeze their glove. The player then brings her elbow straight up to her shoulder presses in for the ball and makes the rest of the play. If anyone is interested in becoming a representative to earn extra income or if you wish to purchase products or host a party contact Ashley through her website at: click on the logo above or call her at (302) News and Tournament Results Taylor Pechin from Harrington, DE is turning the heads and raising the eyebrows of several college coaches between last fall, this summer and the current fall season. The lefty pitcher/slugger is well on her way to finding her dream school among the ones that are showing a lot of interest in her. Albany, Buffalo, Fordham, Elon, Samford, the University of Maine, the University of Alabama, Birmingham, Villanova and Saint Joseph are among the schools wanting her to visit. She has made two trips to Fordham already, and will probably take a trip to Elon soon, with a trip to Alabama s Samford University planned for December and who knows what else will come her way as long as she keeps doing what she is doing. A hard worker with excellent size, Taylor has an extremely bright future. I asked her about the latest schools who had shown interest. Samford s assistant coach watched her in the Sun Classic, as did UA, Birmingham. Each left cards with Nick and wanted her to call. The Samford assistant told her that they wanted her to come to the December camp to pitch and hit in front of the Head Coach and to visit the school. The UA coach has asked her to come to their camp in the summer and do an unofficial visit at the same time. I told her Oscar Mayer University wanted her to come visit the Bacon Making class and she would love to attend. Hence, my nickname for her, the Baconator. It is her favorite food. At a tournament they had none at the hotel breakfast buffet and actually went out and got her some. What a life! I watched the Delaware Storm 12U play an early game Saturday and liked what I saw in my students. Marissa Frederick, a 10U eligible pitcher threw 3 innings against the Twisters 12U in which she struck out 7 of the 9 outs recorded, allowing 0 runs on 1 hit and 1 walk. She was followed by Olivia Tullous, another 10U eligible student who pitched the final 2 innings striking out all 6 outs. Great job, girls!
